II. Prerequisite:

College placement test or successful completion (grade of “P”) in EGL 075

III. Course (Catalog) Description:

High-intermediate academic grammar and composition course for the non-native speaker preparing to take courses for college credit. Introduces the student to intermediate and advanced sentence structures and a variety of short essay types. EGL 076 is a mandatory course.

IV. Learning Objectives :

At the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Write high intermediate ESL-level essays with appropriate development and structure, including effective topic sentences and thesis statements.

B. Write a high-intermediate ESL-level persuasive essay, problem-solution or cause/effect essay, response essay, and comparison essay.

C. Respond to in-class and at-home formal and informal (journal) writing prompts.

D. Demonstrate high-intermediate competency in grammatical structures of written English, including word order, simple, progressive, and perfect verb tenses, coordinate and subordinate conjunctions, gerunds and infinitives, and relative pronouns.

E. Improve essays through editing and proofreading.

V. Academic Integrity and Student Conduct:

Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Oakton’s Code of Academic Conduct. This code prohibits:

falsification and fabrication (lying or distorting the truth), helping others to cheat, unauthorized changes on official documents, pretending to be someone else or having someone else pretend to be you, making or accepting bribes, special favors, or threats, and any other behavior that violates academic integrity.

There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. Oakton’s policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years.

VIII. Course Practices Required:

Course may be taught as a face-to-face or hybrid course.

A. 3 hour lecture: Lectures, discussion, small group work

B. 1 hour lab: Students will complete short writing assignments in the computer lab. Lab time may also be used for individualized grammar work using web sites.

X. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:

Students who complete EGL 076 with an “A” average (90% or higher) for the semester’s work will receive a grade of “P” and a placement of EGL 101NN.

Students who complete EGL 076 with a “B” or “C” (70% - 89%) average for the semester’s work will receive a grade of “P” and a placement of EGL 090.

Students who complete EGL 076 with a “D” or “F” (below 70%) average for the semester’s work will receive a grade of “F.” Their placement will remain EGL 076.

The course average will be determined as follows:
