OAk PARk – PARk AND RECREATION PlANNING COmmITTEE

ElECTION ANNOUNCEmENTThe Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District (the “Park Dis-

trict”) is the independent government agency responsible for provid-ing parks and recreation activities to the community of Oak Park. It also provides these services to the community of Simi Valley and to several unincorporated areas of Ventura County. Many years ago, to better serve the specific needs of the community of Oak Park, the Park District formed an advisory committee which was named the Oak Park – Park and Recreation Planning Committee (the “Committee”).

There are seven members of this Committee, one that is ap-pointed by the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council (the “MAC”), one that is appointed by the Oak Park Unified School District, and five that are elected by those in attendance at a regularly scheduled MAC meeting. For those residents of Oak Park interested in serving on this Committee, an election will be held on January 24, 2017 at the Oak Park Library, Film and Lecture Room. Please note that the date is subject to change.

The Park District hereby announces that elections for three community-at-large seats on the Oak Park – Park and Recreation Planning Committee will be held on January 24, 2017 at 7:00 pm in Room G-9 of the Oak Park High School located at 899 North Kanan Road. Oak Park residents have until 5:00 pm, January 20, 2017, to have their names placed on the ballot. The election will be held dur-ing the regularly scheduled Oak Park Municipal Advisory Committee (MAC) meeting in January.

In this election three members will be elected based upon the number of votes received and will serve two-year terms. Committee members are expected to attend approximately four meetings per year. If you would like to be placed onto the ballot or have any questions please contact the Park District’s Recreation Supervisor Renee Peace at (818) 865-9304 or District Manager Larry Peterson at (805) 584-4407.

NEW lIFETImE FITNESS SPORTS IN OAk PARk

piCKLeBALLPickleball - A sport that is quickly rising through communities

and across the country, people now have the opportunity to play Pickleball at Deerhill Park tennis courts in Oak Park. If you already play it, then you already know about this fast growing sport, which can be played by just about anyone. Invented over 50 years ago this new exercise craze involves fun and social aspects. A combination of badminton, tennis and Ping-Pong, the sport is played with a paddle and wiffleball on a smaller court than tennis.

Originally named after the sport of rowing, pickleboat was a team of a mixed crew similar to pickleball that is a mixed sport. It is contagious, addictive and competitive. The Onix Pute 2 Pickleball is highly recommended for play on the tennis court. This ball lasts much longer with less noise.

DiSC gOLF Disc Golf – New Frisbee 10 hole Golf Course. Also known as

Frisbee Golf, Disc Golf is played much like traditional golf but instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disc or Frisbee. This sport is growing in popularity mainly because of how inexpensive it is to play, easy to learn, as well as the broad range of ages that can play, ranging from school age to older adults.

Players can use just 1, but competitive players carry 3 to sometimes 20 disks that can accommodate type of play and length of throw to metal basket. The objective of the game is to finish the course with the fewest amount of disc or Frisbee throws that come to rest inside metal baskets. Disc Golf baskets can range from 100-600 feet long and players can keep track in their heads or use score cards as they move through the course. This new course is made of par shorter 3 holes and 10 different buckets. Located at Chapparel Park, 217 N. Medea Creek Lane, Oak Park.

inS & OutS OF SuppLeMentSConfused about the array of supplements on the shelves? How

do you choose the appropriate one? What about minerals? Do you really need to supplement? Can't we get everything we need from our food? If you do need to supplement, what are the best ones? With so many options... how can I know what's right for me and my body? If these and similar questions have plagued you in the past, then this seminar is for you. Join us for an engaging seminar to shed some light on these questions and more. Join Dr. Robert Gellibolian (Functional biochemist & founder of PHDNootrition.com) and Caroline Aslanian (Holistic Nutritionist and owner of BarefoodAngel.com) – a brother and sister dynamic duo team. For a fun, engaging and empowering seminar. Their unique approach will fundamentally transform your view on the value of nutrition in health. Robert and Caroline will explain the science behind vitamins and minerals and why supplementation works (or doesn't work) from an accessible and practical point of view.

The goal of this after school program is to empower youth to make an impact on their community, build and maintain relationships with peers and adults, and express tolerance and respect for their culture and the culture of others. The program is run in a way that enables all participants to become experienced at setting goals, explore future career paths, and learn skills that will equip them for future employment, including technological skills.

All teens will have access to homework assistance as well as the necessary materials, including computers, to assist them in their academic success. In addition, the mission is to develop a teen’s capacity to choose positive behaviors that will nurture their own well-being, establish good character and positive self-image, and set personal life goals. The Teen Club encourages youth to hone their creativity through advanced crafts, participate in their local community by visiting the Animal Shelter and Senior Center, and build relationships through teambuilding activities of all kinds. Teens are coached in life skills that include cooking, nutrition, fitness, interpersonal and social skills, a foundation in finances, while focusing on having a positive, respectful attitude.

There are many unique opportunities to practice the skills they are acquiring in the form of excursions to escape rooms, large group activities like mini golf and Ga-ga Ball, and guest speakers from Oak Park and surrounding communities. At their core, activities promote fitness, the positive use of leisure time, stress management skills, and appreciation for a healthy lifestyle. All activities are supervised by RSRPD staff.

BODY ROllING INTRODUCTORY WORkSHOPS Ages 16+ Instructor: Aggie Winston, teaching locally since 2001, certified in Pi-lates and Yamuna Body Rolling, specializes in designing safe, restorative exercise programs for better alignment, core strength and flexibility for students of all ages.Students must pre-register. Location: Oak Park Community Center, Buena Vista RoomIntroduction to Yamuna Body RollingThe focus of this workshop introduces students to the experience of using the different balls and understanding how deep tissue work will release the body's soft tissue called "fascia". The fascial release creates more elasticity and flexibility in the spine, shoulder, legs and hips as it produces better alignment and range of motion for balanced and effortless movement. Save Your Feet & AnklesYour feet and ankles are the foundation of the alignment of your entire body, but we don't often address their flex-ibility and strength until they hurt! The workshop gives students simple proactive tools to prevent and alleviate pain. Learn why your feet break down over a lifetime and the importance of foot fitness regardless of your fitness level. Save Your Hips Learn how to do deep tissue release using small ball therapy to keep your hip joints unrestricted, aligned and fully functional regardless of your age. Healthy hips contribute to better functional muscle tone and strength in the lower back, abdominals, and also legs, ankles and feet. Breathing for Balanced Body AlignmentMost people forget that breath is the "gas" for movement. Break free from limiting breath patterns that are keeping you tired. The program will emphasize breathwork that oxygenates, de-stresses and heals the body naturally.
