New Zealand Modernists 1950’s-1970’s is a reminder of a bygone

era, where the confines of what quintessential New Zealand

Art was were not yet clearly established nor defined. Through

including artists such as Ralph Hotere, Gordon Walters, Jean

Horsley, Richard Killeen and Philip Clairmont, New Zealand Mod-

ernists shows us the divides, but also convergences between the

dichotomies of black/white, the indigenous/the expatriate, the

traditional/the contemporary, male/female and minimalist/ex-

pressionist often present in the works of this time.
