Overseas Wars Funding NOTE: Government agencies were asked in February for spending on memorials and commemorations for NZ Wars and wars fought on foreign soil. While individual entries here reflect those answers, and while an effort was made to ensure the totals for overseas vs domestic battles are comparable, different agencies provided figures for different time periods, so caution is advised in making direct dollar comparisons. Min. of Foreign Affairs $886,000.00 MFAT spending on representation at war commemorations including ANZAC Day for 2013- 14 Ministry for Culture and Heritage $262,722.00 2013-14 operational expenses for First World War Centenary. (Being 30% of $796,129; remainder met by MFAT, NZDF and DIA) Ministry for Culture and Heritage $200,000.00 2013-14 payments to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for the maintenance of memorials at Gallipoli (Turkey), Longueval, Le Quesnoy (France), Messines and s'Gravenstafel (Belgium). NB: Based on averages for previous 5 years, as only 8 years to 2012 were provided. Ministry for Culture and Heritage $308,409.00 2012-2013 (but MCH says this cost would be typical of any financial year). Spending on 17 national monuments ("large structures like the Massey, Ataturk and Savage Memorials and the NZ Memorial in London"); on 4,191 Commonwealth war graves of WWI and WWII within NZ and 5 Pacific Countires; on 36 Korean war graves in the UN cemetery, Busan, Korea.

NZ Defence Force and Veterans Affairs $4,465,000.00

Funding 2013-14 to support overseas commemorations of WWI, WWII, Korean War: $3.95 million; Funding 2013-14 to support national domestic commemorations for WWI, WWII, Korean War: $315,000; Funding for WWI Centennary Programme for 2013-14 $200,000. (Full funding 2014-15 not yet made.)

Ministry for Culture and Heritage $94,795.00

2012-2015 spending on commemorative activities related to the New Zealand Wars anniversaries. (This overstates the comparable spend since it is for 3 years.)

Ministry for Culture and Heritage $25,868.00

2012-2013. 351 historic graves and monuments relating to NZ Wars in 81 sites.

NZ Defence Force, Others

NZDF did not provide a dollar figure, however both Māori organisers and NZDF pointed out that NZDF is providing support for all the NZ War commemorations, from November 2013 to June 2014, Te Ranga; There is also spending on memorials and reserves by the Department of Conservation and Historic Places, who did not respond in time for this article. Creative New Zealand is likely to have funded some individual projects that relate to NZ Wars.
