REASONS TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS

The first reason that drives us to take supplements is the lack of nutrients in our food. It is impossible to obtain all essential nutrients from what we eat daily. Of course, nature is meant to provide us with the essential nutrients that we need, but it was during the yesteryears. Now, the scenario is something different. Presently, the food that we eat is processed and adulterated. Moreover, they are prepared in such a way that nutritional content is killed. Poor digestion is another reason for taking supplements. If our digestion system is performing well, then we are not required to consume high-quality supplements. Unfortunately, that is not the case. As per studies, it has been discovered that majority of the people do not have enough stomach acids. This lowers the capability to obtain nutrients from food. As a result, we suffer from inflammation and stomach bacteria. We also face other health related issues, such as depression, stomach pain and bloating. Vitamin B deficiency is the reason for low stomach acid.

REASONS TO TAKE SUPPLEMENTS Poor food preparation is the third reason. Poor

preparation means cooking food in a manner that reduces or even destroys the nutrients in food. Many foods that you eat in fast-food restaurants are processed.

For instance, the conversion of brown rice into white rice cuts the fibre content by almost 75 per cent. Other nutrients are also compromised, such as Vitamins E, potassium, iron, niacin and thiamine.

BENEFITS OF NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTS

Normally, you should be able to get all the nutrients you need from a balanced diet. However, taking supplements can provide additional nutrients when your diet is lacking or when certain health conditions cause you to develop an insufficiency or deficiency.

In most cases, multiple-vitamin supplements provide all the basic micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) your body needs. These multiple-vitamins are generally safe because they contain only small amounts of the each nutrient.

DISADVANTAGES OF NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTS

The most common problem is taking an overdose. An overdose of vitamin A is toxic to the liver and may lead to serious consequences. Vitamin A is most often given to children in the lower socio-economic age group to prevent night blindness.

A high dose of vitamin C, a water soluble vitamin is not of much use as 76% is excreted by the kidneys.

Some vitamins may react adversely with other medications you are prescribed. An example is vitamin D which lowers the blood levels of the cholesterol lowering drug atorvastatin. So it is best to tell your doctor if you are taking any supplements.

A supplement cannot take the place of a well-balanced diet. It is best to get your daily allowances of vitamins from food and rely on a supplement to only take care of specific deficiencies.
