To speak of the Rioja Alta Wine Route is to speak of one of the most representative places in World Wine Culture. Here, the world revolves around
wine, vineyards and wineries.Wine has always set the pace. It is a way of life. And
it has been so since ancient times. The rock presses are a reminder of how long ago were grapes tread next to the vineyards. A must see
You should see the old cellars, dug into the ground since the Middle Ages to preserve the wine, creating true underground wine cities. Hard work to guarantee exce-llent preservation. Today they are still used by some wi-neries to make their wines.
The great wineries of the 19th century excavated lar-ge cellars under their unique buildings, upholding a long history and tradition.
But the entire territory is culture and history. A visit to the old towns with their big mansions, palaces, medieval castles and bridges o ers a priceless opportunity to delve into the history of the area. One should also not forget the monumental churches, with their fantastic altarpieces and the monasteries, true wonders of our heritage.
And, of course, there is the food, which is such a key part of our culture.
WINE CULTURE
WINE LANDSCAPE
The vineyards in La Rioja provide a spectacular view. Constantly changing with the seasons, they follow the symbolic pace of the vine growth cy-
cle’s eternal rebirth.Autumn is breathtaking, with a diversity of colours
—powerful reds and intense yellows show a new facet of nature-become-art. The colours spread across a varied landscape with a myriad perspectives and a uncounted nuances.
It is an ideal time for photographers and painters, who will fi nd an endless number of subjects for their wor-ks. It is also perfect for those who have a special sensiti-vity to the beauty of nature.
Winter provides a di erent, albeit no less beautiful, view of the land. There is a sense bareness, with browns alternating with the white traces of snow.
When snow covers the land, it provides the opportu-nity of a di erent, almost minimalist reading of the terri-tory. The bare vines are outlined in the snow in what look like characters in the Japanese phonetic script. Just let your imagination soar to fi nd a beautiful and disturbing reality.
Green is the colour of spring and summer. The coun-try awakens, full of life with shades of colour that, little by little, cover the countryside. You can discover how clus-ters are born, develop and mature on the road to the next vintage.
Autumn again closes this eternal cycle.
Enjoying wine culture on the La Rioja Alta Wine Rou-te is a di erent way of enjoying your trip. Here, an immersion into the world of wine is a rich ex-
perience to discover and become part of the fascinating world of Rioja Wine.
Your senses will become your great allies to perceive sensations, try and taste wines and local cuisine, and also enjoy smells, sounds, colours, textures, and more.
Participate in di erent activities related to wine cul-ture, from wine tastings during harvest to grape treading, from the experiences o ered by museums to walks along the trails that cross the territory, from quiet contemplation in the interior of a church to hot-air balloon fl ights over the vineyards.

WINE EXPERIENCES
Wine battle The most famous feast in the town of Haro is held on St. Peter’s Day, 29 June, listed as an event of national tourist interest, which involves a ‘wine battle’ under the Bilibio Crags.
It’s a peaceful battle in which the members of each side drench their enemies in wine, provided they fi nd out which side they are on.
All weapons are valid in this bloodless battle, from wineskins to knapsack sprayers, as long as they serve to spray the thousands of litres of wine that transform the crags into a fantastic spectacle.
Briones Medieval Festival In mid-June, the streets of Briones are adorned with gar-lands, tapestries and banners with the coats of arms of the town, while house portals turn into living recreations of the various activities and crafts of centuries ago. Con-vents, noble mansions, the Inquisition, weavers, embroi-derers, blacksmiths, coopers, carpenters and much more.
Ancient skills are displayed and admired by hundreds of visitors who come to Briones for the festival.
Ábalos Open DayThe fi rst weekend in September is Ábalos Open Day, when the wineries in the town open their doors to visitors and o er their wines to taste. Throughout the day there are various activities, visits to wineries, food and wine tastings, picture exhibitions and videoclip screenings, all related to the world of wine.
FESTIVITIES AND TRADITIONS...
San Asensio Claret BattleOn one of the last Sundays in July, the Rioja town of San Asensio celebrates its famous Claret Battle. It is a pitched battle using the town’s typical claret wine as its only we-apon. San Asensio is known in the world of wine as the cradle of claret.
The Picaos of San Vicente de la SonsierraThe Picaos of San Vicente de la Sonsierra are fl a-
gellants who walk through the town in penitence during Easter. The procession is listed as a tourist event, as the tradition has been uninterruptedly upheld for centuries.
The fl agellants can be seen at the following times: Holy Thursday, during the procession of the Sacrament
and the Holy Hour. Holy Friday, after the procession of the Stations of the Cross and during the procession of the Holy Burial. The fi rst Sunday in May, known as ‘May Cross’ and the second Sunday in September or ‘Septem-ber Cross’.
Haro Wine CarnivalThe Wine Carnival is held in Haro, capital of La Rioja Alta and core of Rioja Wine Culture. There is a Great Masked Ball when the new vintages of Haro wineries are presen-ted. The fancy dress ball has a di erent theme every year —French Rococo and Spanish Baroque, Belle Époque and more... a festivity where music, images and the world of the wine culture merge together.
Briones, its streets and squaresBriones has an unmistakable medieval fl avour. The town’s streets and squares take us back to the middle ages, with a wealth of buildings of great historical and artistic va-lue, including the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.
Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad in CasalarreinaWithout a doubt, it is one of the most interesting monu-ments in Rioja Alta, listed as a national historic-artistic monument. Located on the main square of the town of Casalarreina, the monastery ensemble brings us closer to what life was like in the 16th century and shows how it has developed until today.
Santa María de la Piscina in San Vicente de la SonsierraThe set is one of the region’s artistic treasures. Built in 1136 in the Romanesque style, the shrine boasts varied monumental sculptures. Next to it, there is a medieval necropolis from the time the area was repopulated, a village of partial cave dwellings and remains of fortifi ca-tions and watchtowers.
NOT TO BE MISSED...
NOT TO BE MISSED...
Castle of Davalillo in San AsensioA clear example of 13th century Romanesque style, it is located on a hill overlooking the Ebro. At one time, there was a small village there, known as Davalillo, and the for-tifi cations served to protect Briones, the lands of La Son-sierra and Rioja Alta. Of particular interest is the Keep, with its rectangular base, which is next to the wall and holds a chapel on the ground fl oor.
Cuzcurrita del Río TirónOne of the most beautiful urban ensembles in Rioja Alta with a true medieval fl avour. The buildings on its streets are mostly ashlar, with beautifully carved coats of arms on many façades. The castle and the bridge that connects the winery quarter plus the church make up an ensemble not to be missed.
Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol in HaroAt the foot of La Atalaya hill lies the primitive town of Haro and, in it, the Church of Santo Tomás Apostol, listed as a cultural asset since 1931. The choir and altarpiece are well worth seeing but what is undoubtedly a very special component of this ensemble is the tower, which set the example for many others, such as those of Santa María la Redonda in Logroño (1742) or the towers of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada (1765).
Sajazarra historic-artistic ensembleThe urban layout of Sajazarra is one of the most medie-val in La Rioja. It has withstood the passage of time with few modifi cations, proving today a superb historic-artistic ensemble. The castle, church and wall arch are accompa-nied by numerous 19th century ashlar houses.
Castle of San Vicente de la SonsierraIt is a typical castle-fortress with a defensive role atop a hill. In this case, the fortress is located at the top of a hill overlooking the River Ebro in the town of San Vicente. Its central courtyard holds the Church of Santa María la Mayor and, below it, there is a medieval bridge crossing the Ebro which was built in the 11th century and reconstructed seve-ral times later.
Briñas bridge over the River EbroLocated at about 2 km from Haro on the road to Vitoria, the Briñas bridge is one of the few mediaeval bridges which cross this river and retain original components.
It was built during the last third of the 13th century in the Gothic and later repaired. It was considered on of the key accesses to La Rioja Alta from the North.
Vivanco Museum of the Culture of Wine in BrionesThe Museum of the Culture of Wine is located in a unique sce-nic and historical setting surrounded by the vineyards and next to the winery of the Vivanco family. It allows visitors to discover the exciting world of wine, —where it comes from, how it is made and its religious, cultural and artistic symbolism.
Wine and wineriesThe La Rioja Alta Wine Route is dotted with dozens of hun-dred-year-old wineries that bring together tradition and technology to make the most exquisite wines. The towns on the Route have a wide range of wines, made both by large wineries, some over a hundred years old, and small winemakers who preserve their ancient cellars in the typi-cal winery quarters of each town.
