WHAT IS DM?

Now in its 36th year, Northwestern University Dance Marathon, or DM, is one of the largest student-run philanthropies in the nation. Since 1975, Northwestern students have raised more than $10 million for 30 different beneficiaries. Each year, Dance Marathon unites over 1,200 students in an annual commitment of fundrais-inging, volunteering and learning for a chosen beneficiary.

In the fall, almost 1000 students pledge to raise a minimum of $800 and take on the physical chal-lenge of dancing for 30 hours straight. Alongside the dancers, hundreds of additional student com-mittee members fundraise and spread awareness while they organize events prior and during the main event in March.

While the main event spans 30 hours, fundraising and preparation start well in advance. Students and the surrounding community are engaged throughout the year attending DM events held on campus and in the Chicago area. On a national scale, DM events are also held throughout the country by dedicated alumni. Even across the worldworld, students of Northwestern’s Qatar campus actively participate in DM’s efforts.

During the 30-hour marathon, more than 15,000 students and faculty, family members, alumni and community members converge upon the Norris University Center not only to watch and offer encouragement to the dancers, but also to partake in the various events held throughout the weekend. Visitors bid in the silent auction, com-petepete in the 5K run, or enjoy a relaxing day at the DM Spa.

Over 97 percent of all funds raised go directly to the year’s chosen Dance Marathon beneficiaries.

FFor Dance Marathon 2010, it is our great honor to announce StandUp for Kids as the primary beneficiary. StandUp works to provide crisis inter-vention and basic survival necessities for at-risk and homeless youth. The problem of displaced youth in the Chicagoland area has largely gone unnoticed and unaddressed. StandUp for Kids aimsaims to help these homeless and street kids by teaming up with Northwestern students and strengthening their presence in the Chicagolandarea.

DM dollars also go to work locally. Through a 13-year partnership with the Evanston Commu-nity Foundation (ECF) as our secondary benefi-ciary, DM strengthens Northwestern students’ local involvements and supports the community that we call home for four years. ECF grants and leadership provide growing resources for nonprofit organizations serving Evanston and itsresidents.

Northwestern University Dance Marathon is the culmination of a year of fundraising, volunteering, and educating by more than 1000 students.

OUR BENEFICIARIES

The Evanston Community Foundation (ECF) is a publicly supported philanthropic organi-zation dedicated to enriching Evanston and the lives of its people, now and in the future. The foundation builds and manages its own and other community endowments, addresses Evanston’s changing needs through grant-making, and provides leadership on important community issues. ECF funds organizations and initiatives that improve the quality of life in Evanston, and Dance Marathon strives to strengthen Northwestern University students’ involvement with the community that serves as their home for four years. DM began its partnershippartnership with them in 1998 and they have been our secondary beneficiary for 13 years. ECF will receive 10% of our net proceeds in 2010. Please visit their website, www.evanstonforever.org for more information.

InIn the United States there are at least 1,000,000 homeless youth struggling to survive on the streets. StandUp takes both immediate and preventative measures to address the issue of youth homelessness. Trained outreach counselors search alleys, abandoned buildings, and even the woods looking for street and homeless youth. StandUp Outreach Centers pro-vide immediate aid to these children and teens by offering a safe haven for rest, meals, and services such as job referral, apartment transition, identification and internet for education instruction.

Over the years, StandUp has provided services at least 60,000 times to at-risk youth. With Northwestern Dance Marathon’s help, StandUp aims to significantly expand its operations in the Chicago area by creating an additional outreach center. This will help hundreds of displaced youth in the Midwest, giving them the opportunity to live up to their full potential. Please visit their website, www.standupforkids.org for more information.

StandUp for Kids was started in 1990 by retired Naval Officer Richard Koca as an extension of his work in the Navy. The national non-profit volun-teer outreach organization is dedi-cated to going to the streets and making a difference in the lives of at-risk, homeless and street kids.

Dance Marathon is consistently one of the most popular events on Northwestern’s campus. With 800 dancers, 400 committee members, and thousands of other students who are aware of and involved with DM throughout the year, our sponsors enjoy valuable campus-wide exposure. Invariably, DM attracts hard working, motivated, and successful students who strive to change their community and their world. As these thousands of movers and shakers begin careers or pursue graduate degrees inyears to come, they could also be your most valuable customers or employees.

Beyond campus, DM receives substantial local and national coverage in the media, and we strive each year to expand this coverage. Recently, the primary focus of this expansion has been towards the web, with the entire 30 hours of DM broadcast live on the DM web-site, www.nudm.org. Each year, DM increases public awareness of the Dance Marathon message and the generositygenerosity of our sponsors through print media, televi-sion, and radio outlets as well.
