For Year 2015, it is an exciting year for Naresuan University and our community. We shall celebrate our 25th year

anniversary of our establishment or our Silver Anniversary. In the past 25 years, Naresuan University has been contributing

to Thai society through education, research and community services. These activities result in further social and economic

development in the lower northern region of our country and also elsewhere. We aim to gradually transform our campus into

a research university as well as an environmentally friendly or green campus.

To begin our celebration in this auspicious year, we will have a series of academic events both on and off campus.

As a kick-off, we have invited Prof. Dr. Bruce A. Beutler, a 2011 Nobel Prize laureate in Medicine, to deliver a special lecture

entitled “Global Struggle Against Infectious Disease” on February 2nd of 2015.

Subsequently, Naresuan University will host a series of lectures, conferences and seminars throughout 2015.

Certainly, we look forward to seeing you as an important part of our important year and moments prior to, together, stepping

forward steadily towards our ambitious goals awaiting us in our Golden Anniversary in the next 25 years!

The brain is the most important organ of the body,

controlling body functions, such as memory, communication,

and movement. If something negatively effects the brain, it

can impact daily activity and become a health problem, as

Alzheimer’s disease has become. More than 700,000 Thai

people now face this disease, but none of several medications

currently available is able to stop or reverse the disease at

this time. Alzheimer’s patients lose memory capacity due

to brain deterioration. This in turn interferes with a person’s

dailyactivitiesandcanleadthepersontodiewithinfive

years if they do not receive proper treatment. For this reason,

early detection is vital to protect the brain against Alzheimer’s

disease.

NU’s research team from the Cardio-Thoracic

Technology Division, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Naresuan

University headed by Ajarn Watchara Keawmahanin, Miss

Kanokwan Phoomcharoen, Miss Supranee Klankasikorn and

Miss Maneerat recognized this problem, and they created a

machine named the “Early Detection of Alzheimer Device”

to help people detect dangerous signs of Alzheimer’s

disease early. Using this concept, people can be tested by

sensors in the machine focusing on brain waves and oxygen

levels. These markers can indicate signs of trouble in the

forebrain,whichisthefirstareatobedestroyedinAlzheimer’s.

The results are quite accurate and can help the patient

guard against Alzheimer’s disease, as well as Parkinson’s

disease and Epilepsy.

This innovation leapt past 700 other participants

from different universities to receive the second prize in

the Idea Seed category of True Innovation Awards 2014 at

citrus fruit locally called “Somsa.” According to the study

by Ms. Nopparat Sethanakul, Ms. Jeerakit Kerdsiri, Ms. Boontrika

Yoodee and project advisor, Asst. Prof. Ausadang Ponnok,

Ph.D., the fruit “Somsa,” commonly known as “citron” with

thescientificname,CitrusMedica,containsantioxidantsthat

can help repair free radicals, thereby lessening the risk of

damaged cells contributing to cancer. The antioxidants found

in extracted “Somsa” leaf oil are free from mercury and are

good for people with sensitive skin. The research team, then,

proceeded to integrate the leaf oil into the manufacturing

of safe and healthy lipsticks. The study won the 2nd prize at

the 14th Thailand Innovation Awards held at Centara Hotel

in Bangkok.

order to promote the valuable qualities of “Somsa.” Not only

do these lipsticks with antioxidants beautify and moisturize

girls’ lips, they also prevent cancer and serve as anti-aging

cosmetics. To answer the need of the market for variety,

“Somsa” lipsticks were launched in two kinds: glossy and

matte.Theycomeinfivedifferentcolors:pinkishgloss

gloss labeled Classy, purple matte labeled Secret, and red

matte labeled Courage.

The research project advisor, Asst. Prof. Ausadang,

said that “Somsa” is a fruit belonging to the Citrus family

mostly grown in WangSomsa village in Phitsanulok, Thailand.

Aside from its tasty fruit, “Somsa” leaves were utilized as

medicine by Thai people in the past, believing the leaves

havemedicallybeneficialcharacteristics.Presently,however,

unaware of its importance, very few people grow and cultivate

“Somsa.” This is another reason why this project was launched;

it’s not only to add value to “Somsa” but also to preserve

local knowledge, systems, and practices that have helped

Thai people live longer.

Naresuan University picked up another prize when

1 of 3 fourth year students from Radiological Technology,

NU Architecture Alumnus Bags 1st Prize in 2014Thai National Costume Competition

An alumnus of Naresuan University from the Faculty

of Architecture had etched his artistry on the minds of the

judges out of the 614 entries with his traditional costume

design in the recently concluded Thai National Costume

Contest for 2014. Amornwipu “Keng” Injad, who at present

is an architect by profession, artistically translated a costume

that adheres to this year’s theme: “Creative Thai.” He created

a monochromatic traditional Thai attire named “Shadow of

Siam,” of which he drew inspiration from the shadow puppetry

that is embedded in the traditional culture of most of Southeast

Asia. Injad, with his pure talent tastefully made a design that

shied away from the usual colorful and gold hues and went

in for the mysterious black color instead. Moreover, the overall

message is that “Nangyai” the term for the Shadow Puppetry,

is a performance that uses black as the centerpiece color, thus

other colors are solely perceived through the imagination of

the audience. The said contest, which was participated in by

hundreds of talented designers all over Thailand, was opened

by the organizers of Miss Universe Thailand to deliberately

choose a dress that can imbibe the unique Thai sense of style.

Meanwhile, Injad’s winning piece will be Miss Universe Thailand

2014 Pimbongkod “Ellie” Chankaew’s traditional attire for

the 63rd Miss Universe Pageant on January 25, 2015 in Doral

Miami Florida, USA. Injad alongside his minimalistic yet elegant

design only proves that grand designs for the grand stage

need not be obvious but rather should serve a purpose.
