Spherical Torus Fusion Development PathRealistic Steps Toward Attractive DEMO
ST is a low-aspect-ratio tokamak (R/a ~ 1.5)Attractive physics features:
• Naturally high elongation• High beta• High shape-factor
Attractive reactor features:
• A simple inexpensive demountable TF Coil. • Allowing radically simplified maintenance.M. Ono FESAC 1
Next Steps in ST Development Path
NHTX (PE-ST) at 3 - 4 MA range provides cost effective physics / technology basis in support for CTF and DEMO: Demonstrate stable continuous high-performance operation with very high heat flux and acceptable hydrogen isotope retention.
ST-CTF
Compact ST-CTF at ~ 10 MA range provide a compact nuclear component test facility to support DEMO: Provide ~ 6 Mwyr/m2 neutron over ~ 10 m2 with acceptable level of tritium consumption
Present ST program contributes physics basis for the crucial next step ST devices

NSTX Mission Elements1. To provide physics design basis and operational scenario support for ITER through active participation in ITPA and the US BPO, and also 2. To provide the physics basis and operational scenario for the next- step experiments such as NHTX. 3. To provide the physics basis required for optimizing the conceptual designs for ST-CTF and ST-DEMO. 4. To advance the understanding of toroidal magnetic confinement of plasmas generally.
NSTX/ST Strength:• Exceptionally wide operating plasma parameter space• High degree of facility flexibility • Highly accessible plasmas - unique diagnostics
