A Note from the Founder/President

“Creativity is the power to connect the seemingly unconnected.” (William Plomer)

At NSAA, though it isn’t stated explicitly in our mission, connecting the seemingly uncon-nected is what we do…

We create new friendship connections when children from different schools work togeth-er on a musical like Aladdin, performing at the CPAC in January. When someone from New York traveled with someone from Grafton, for our first Arts Immersion Tour to Italy. When families meet for the first time at events like our upcoming,“ Masquerade Charade.” And when a young child teaches an adult a few dance steps in our multi-generational-musical like our upcoming, “Fiddler on the Roof.”

We connect community members when they come to a yoga class, practicing together in our peaceful gallery on a snowy winter night or join us foran adult art class in our studio. When folks work on a fundraising event, or when they gather at the new “Wine Social” called, “The Glass Palette” located on the first floor of the Arts Mill. They create new relationships when they come to one of our art shows, like our upcoming Global Fusion, which connects artists from around the world.

CreaTeen for Life was a new program launched this past fall that connected in many ways. Leaders from the community connected with NSAA in support of the program, while the students who gather each week contribute to the collective creativity, connect-ing with others through their community work. Alumni, volunteers, board directors, staff, businesses, foundations—all share in their own way to support what NSAA does, and in that, seemingly unconnected creative connections expand even more.

But what NSAA is also very blessed to do is help individuals connect with their own inner self. It happens to a certain extent, every time a paint brush touches a canvas, fingers glide across a keyboard, and a voice fills the silence with song. Expressing your true self, the expression of inner beauty, is what art is to us at NSAA. And when Self is expressed in truth, others will then connect in powerful ways. The universal language is music, and who can resist the flood of emotion at a painting that touches an inner raw place deep inside? Or the grace you witness at a dancer moving across a stage… Creativity, the unbridled, unfettered way of wonder and discovery that creates new pathways, not only in the brain but in life itself.

Connecting to each other, to ourselves… to the “seemingly” unconnected…it’s impor-tant. It’s essential. It’s part of the process of creativity becoming art.

We are looking forward to our next season where we have a myriad of creative ways for you to become involved. Take a look at the classes, the exciting events, the amazing calendar of art shows Paula has lined up. Stop in at the new Glass Palette on a Friday evening. Come to a production, volunteer, teach, become a studio artist. Join us by con-necting with us through your own form of creative expression.

On behalf of myself, Paula, and our entire team, thank you for your continued support in creativity, in community, and in North Shore Academy of the Arts.

CreaTeen for LifeA behind the scenes look…

A cutting edge research and experience based program designed to unleash teens’ creativity, equipping them with tools and perspectives to manage the pressures they face for overall well being. A unique link in the chain of community services that not only helps teens cope... but inspires them to thrive.

Dear Teen,

This program challenges you, invites you to take risks, asks you to have fun, releases stress and encourages you to create. Mostly it gives you the tools to navigate through these years of transition.

Being involved in this program might help you with your future goals. It will introduce you to new ways of thinking that may give you an edge. You’ll be exposed to really cool people, have once in a life time experiences, and perhaps develop talents and interests that you didn’t even know you had.

This is not like any class you’ve experienced before; it’s not a common art or music class. And you don’t have to be considered an “artist” to be involved. This isn’t about doing well. It’s about being well. That means dealing in new ways with all the pressures you face, from friend and cyber pressure to schools and grades, college thoughts, jobs, your family, your self-image, and yes, drinking and drugs. No matter what your philosophy is on substance use, this program will help you to see things in a way you maybe haven’t before. Behind the scenes.

Make no mistake- this isn’t a drug program. This isn’t a “Just say no” kind of a thing. It isn’t a therapy class or a place for teens who “need help.” What is it then? For once, let’s not define.

Come. Find out for your Self.

“High Stress teens are twice as likely as low stress teens to smoke, drink, get drunk and use illegal drugs.” (findings by CASA)

Because of the pressures and developmental stage teens are at, we consider every teen to be “at risk”. We also believe in the unlimited amazing potential in each individual.

Certified completion of the program may make your teen eligible to receive exemption for school/community related obligations or provide recognition that enhances his/her resume.

Stephanie Brown has had a modeling career that has taken her on a world wide journey. One that has shaped her character and weaved itself into everything she’s accomplished. After graduation from college Stephanie decided to pursue what had been a part-time modeling career full time. Her pursuit took her from Chicago to Paris, London, and South Africa with a few other stops in-between. She’s modeled in major fashion shows at the renowned Louvre, and worked for top designers like Christian Dior and Sonia Rykiel. Between fashion seasons and while pursuing a master’s degree in journalism, Stephanie taught modeling workshops. At first it was considered a side job; it later became undeniable that teaching is one of Stephanie’s passions. Now, years later, Stephanie continues to teach and work behind the scenes of the modeling industry. Teaching was and still is one of the most rewarding things she enjoys

doing. In conjunction with maintaining her presence in the modeling and talent industries, she worked full time as a reporter/anchor. Her most recent stay was six years with CBS 58 in Milwaukee. She’s covered everything from presidential visits to natural disasters.
