ACAD in the city centre presents an unprecedented opportunity to make a
real difference for Calgary, Alberta, and Canada. Leveraging the creativity and
innovation of ACADs community of artists and designers gives us a unique
ability to build synergy between community development, cultural development,
urban placemaking post-secondary education infrastructure, and a growing
knowledge-based industry. This synergy will, in turn, enrich the work of the
college and enliven the cultural landscape of the province and the city.
ACAD will bring thousands of artists and creative thinkers from around the
country and around the globe to the city centre, creating a cultural heart for
Calgary. Leading innovators in arts and culture will bring their ideas to classes
and lectures as well as cafes, community groups, and start-up cultural institutions.
The library will inspire and educate. The galleries will present ideas and promote
dialogue. The community will learn, grow, and innovate. ACAD will be a part of
the city, sharing spaces, stimulating ideas, and stirring culture.

Supporting Albertas post-secondary education strategyACADs initiative is strategically aligned with the educa-
tional policy and business priorities of several provincial
stakeholders, including Alberta Advanced Education.
The Ministry of Advanced Education has released a
20-year plan to increase access to and participation in
post-secondary education in Alberta by 15,000 spaces
by 2008 and 60,000 spaces by 2020 1. This plan placesspecic emphasis on education with a focus on unleash-
ing innovation, leading in learning, competing in a global
marketplace and making Alberta a world-class place to
live, work and visit. This clear mandate underscores the
imperative to provide expanded opportunities for post-
secondary arts and design education in the province
and in Calgary in particular.ACAD already educates nearly one third of all arts and
design graduates in Alberta and, based on current
demand, the college is anticipating signicant enrollment
growth in the future. ACAD located in the centre of
Calgary will allow the college to expand student enroll-
ment, program innovation, and community outreach for
continuing education classes and lectures. ACAD will
become a leading cultural and educational resource for
the province.1 Alberta College of Art and Design; Master Plan Report; pp. 12-13.
Developing talent and professional infrastructure
for Albertas future
ACAD is committed to integrating its academic programs
with Albertas growing business community. In addition
to fueling a cultural economy, ACAD will provideAlbertas workforce with graduates educated in design,
arts and innovation. Such individuals are in increasing

demand as businesses seek new ways to solve complex
problems, employ systems thinking and create differen-
tiation among competitors.
ACADs graduates will support the sustainable growth
of the provinces creative and knowledge-based industries
for years to come. A multi-dimensional professional land-
scape will enable Alberta to maintain an edge when
competing with other cities for businesses, skilled workers,
students, tourists, and events. Cultivating a wider range
of job opportunities will also help companies to attract
more families to the area and promote sustainable
urban growth. ACAD in the city centre creates a prominent
urban environment in support of the provinces commitment
to building a world-class, sustainable city and province.
Creating an urban identity and sense of place
The appeal of urban arts districts as tourist destinations is
proven around the world. From Torontos Distillery District
and Vancouvers Granville Island to New Yorks Soho and
Baltimores Station North, locals and visitors are consis-
tently driven to arts districts for entertainment, dining,
and shopping, as well as performances and exhibitions.
The impacts of this tourism can be quite signicant. Forexample, the current cultural development in Toronto is
expected to attract more than 4 million visitors per year 2 .
With ACAD in the heart of Calgary, the city centre will de-
velop a neighbourhood with a uniquely creative character
including galleries, performances, and cafes. As an
educational institution, ACAD will lead the way, sponsoring
activities like the Institute for the Creative Processsuccessful Stirring Culture lecture series that will attract
both Canadians and international visitors.2 Urban Land, March 2006
Building innovation, creative thought leadership, and a cultural industry
Culture-based industry and commerce are already
important segments of Canadas economic future. Cur-
rently, the cultural industries generate annual revenues
of approximately $15.7 billion and employ approximately
87,000 persons in Canada 3 . Culture-based industries
are a signicant generator of skills-based jobs, and area crucial part of Canadas knowledge-based economy.
Investing in ACADs future in the heart of Calgary will
allow the college and the city to emerge as leaders in
Canadas growing creative industry. Supporting ACADs
growth also supports the education of Canadas brightest
creative thinkers, designers and artists. Together, we will
create a sustainable source of innovation, creativity andtalented citizens for both the province and Canada.3 Prole of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the Canadian Cultural Industries,

Building a neighbourhood economyACADs presence in the city centre will spur economic
development and provide a growing tax base for both
the city and the province. Both directly and indirectly,
the college will drive residential development in the
area, attracting a residential population that will include
working artists, students and college staff as well as
professionals working in Calgarys downtown core. Thissame population will also support restaurants, cafes,
groceries, bookshops, art supply stores, and other retail
and commercial development in the neighbourhood.
Arts institutions and programs have wide public support,
and are often viewed as desirable amenities in a
community. Building on ACADs creative population,
the neighbourhood will attract new businesses includingdesign rms, new media ventures, photography studios,
and galleries. The ACAD neighbourhood will come
alive with round the clock activity, creating a vibrant
community in the heart of the city centre.
As ACAD expands, it will also provide additional
employment opportunities faculty, researchers,
support staff, etc. for artists and designers as well as
neighbourhood residents. Graduates will enter Calgarys
professional workforce in increasing numbers, and
these new professionals will bring both design skills
and an understanding of the creative process to
Calgarys expanding knowledge-based industries.

Catalyst for cultural developmentACADs inuence will extend far beyond the classroom
walls into the heart of the city. As both a cultural leader
and an educational institution, ACAD is well positioned
to partner with Calgarys existing cultural institutions
and to build a cultural community that supports creativity
and innovation in Calgary and across Alberta. The college
will be a focus point for creative organizations of alltypes cultural institutions, community-based arts
organizations and private businesses fostering shared
dialogue, exchange of ideas, and increased awareness.
Investing in ACADs future in the heart of Calgary will
allow the college and the city to emerge as signicant
leaders in Canadas growing cultural and creative
industries. Building this capacity in Calgary will create asustainable source of innovation, creativity and talented
citizens for the entire province.

Promoting leadership in innovation andnew partnership opportunities
Developing a new ACAD presence in the city centre will
allow the college to take an even stronger role in bringing
innovation to the civic and business communities.
Already, ACAD is an institutional leader in creative thinking.
Developing a closer connection to Calgarys urban core
will allow the college to leverage that innovation acrossa wide community of partners.
Bringing ACAD into the city centre will enable the
development of partnerships with other cultural institu-
tions, local civic groups and the downtown business
community. Specically, ACADs Institute for the Creative
Process will provide a forum for collaboration between
academic and business communities, and will serve as avehicle for communicating this work to the public.

Expanding program opportunities and diversityAcross Canada and around the world there is a growing
demand for leadership and innovation from cultural
institutions. ACAD now has the opportunity to help
ll that need, becoming one of Canadas premier
cultural institutions and making a difference in our
cultural landscape.
Currently ACAD educates approximately one third of allarts and design graduates in Alberta. The college has
developed a comprehensive plan for growth that includes
a signicant increase in total enrollment, greater student
diversity and an expanded curriculum. The college will
also begin the implementation of a graduate degree
program as part of a new mandate that was granted by
the Ministry of Advanced Education, and continue tobroaden the reach of its community education programs.
ACAD recently created the highly innovative Institute
for the Creative Process (ICP@ACAD). The program, the
rst of its kind at a Canadian post-secondary institution,
was specically formed to focus and organize the
various activities, enterprises, and initiatives of the
college with regard to cultivation of dialogue, research,
and special projects that directly address the nature ofthe creative process and design thinking. The program
has also given ACAD the opportunity to build partner-
ships with some of Canadas leading corporations.
Based on ACADs projected growth, new facilities are
essential in order to accommodate an expanding student
population, a diversity of programs, and greater
engagement with the community of Calgary and beyond.

Nurturing the creative lifestyle
Located in the city centre, ACAD will be a nucleus for
creativity. It will support young artists who come to
the college to learn and grow, as well as established
professionals who join ACAD to practice their craft and
mentor others. Many creative professionals seek the
energy and fast pace of city life. The urban environmentprovides the concentration of creative impulse that
fosters dialogue, expression, exchange, collaboration,
experimentation, production, and innovation. ACAD will
support this atmosphere by growing its own presence,
broadening the scope of the creative community, and
partnering with other cultural institutions in Calgary and
around the province.Across North America, the popularity of urban colleges
is increasing. Particularly at art and design institutions,
students and faculty are seeking increased engagement
with the city and community. With ACAD located in the
heart of Calgary there will be numerous opportunities
for artists and designers to become a part of the urban
experience. The college may support benet perfor-mances, community art shows, continuing education,
partnerships with local schools, and public art projects,
as well as more informal participation with neighbour-
hood residents.
