Friend 2 Friend was begun in Crockett County to help children reach their full potential because when our children succeed, Crockett succeeds! Friend 2 Friend matches caring adults with chil-dren who need encouragement to set goals, to make plans to reach those goals, to dream of a bright future. F2F wants all Crockett’s children to become productive citizens who give back to their community by taking care of their families, by being active in their churches and schools. “All adults who succeed had someone in their lives who modeled hard work, financial respon-sibility and community service in front of them. For many of us this was our parents and we were blessed to grow up in loving and supportive fam-ilies. We need to pay that forward to help chil-dren realize their dreams, “states Carol Haynes Barraza, Director of F2Fm. Two programs are available to help our children. A Lunch Buddy meets with an elemen-tary child once weekly during a student’s lunch time. This works well for persons who have a set time lunch time or retired. All elementary schools in the county are participating and sup-portive. Older students are given the opportunity to join the Mentoring program where they are given a mentor who meets with them 0nce a week for one hour to share hobbies, community service, com-munity activities and discussing any concerns the young adults might have. The main purpose for this time is to give the child an opportunity to be relaxed, happy and know there are those who really care. These activities are planned and permission is given by the parents. JJ (pictured-whatever the location) has been in the F2F Mentoring Program since early spring with Charlie Young. JJ was introduced to the world of horses and guitar playing. Together they have given back to the community with simple acts of kindness and assisting other charitable organiza-tions in Crockett County. JJ has become part of Charlie’s family bonding with his children and grand children and even supporting the grand kids at their softball games. JJ is happy, knows he has a new friend and someone he can rely on. This is only example of Friend 2 Friend Mentoring improving lives and our community. Please show you care about Crockett County’s future and our most precious resource, our children. Call Carol Haynes Barraza at 696-F@FM (3236) for information and answers to all your questions. Like us on Facebook at Crockett Friend2Friend Mentoring to see what great things are happening and for information on upcoming events.Carol HaynesDirector/Crockett Friend2Friend731 696 F2FM

Her hard work and dedication paid off. She shot 91 out of 100 targets on her first day of competi-tion. She had gun malfunctions but id not let that stop her. Her second day of competition, (with Borrowed gun) she shot 98 out of 100. A near perfect vic-tory. This brought her the National Title and a Gold Metal. Carah-Beth shoots for the Haywood Young Guns shooting team in Brownsville. Shooting is her pas-sion and she has won many titles leading up to this win. She held title of HOA Sporting Clays TN State Cham-pion 2009, 2010, 2011. Regional Ladies Skeet Champion 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Regional Ladies Sporting Clays 2009, 2010, 2011. This award is prestigious award determined by past shooting scores and students GPA from school, and letters of Rec-ommendation. She was very humbled and honored to re-ceive this silver plate award.

CB practices several days a week, shooting up to 400 plus rounds (shells) a week. Her dedication to this sport is lead by her desire to shoot on the Olympic In-ternational Shooting Skeet Team. When asked about her shooting ability, she replies, “God gave me a talent and I feel Blessed, He deserves the Glory for my ability.”

• Tip 1: Stay safe on the roadways by sleeping enough.Less than six hours of sleep triples your risk for a crash. • Tip 2: If you’re an older adult, stay social. Studies showsocial activities — including volunteering, joining a group or visiting a friend’s house — keep your mind sharp as you get older. • Tip 3: Work walnuts into your diet. Nuts, especially walnuts, may be good for your heart if they replace unhealthy fats in your diet. Sprinkle unsalted walnuts and fruit on oatmeal or toss walnuts with leafy greens, like a spinach salad.• Tip 4: Be sure to stretch after working out. Stretches keep your muscles from getting tight after walking, biking and other exercises. Hold the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds, then relax and repeat at least four times. • Tip 5: Enjoy the simple things. Make a list and regularly engage in these interests, whether reading a book or gazing at a spider’s web.

When considering signage, several tiers have been developed to ensure proper integration with the new Vision Source brand. All new construction should utilize the Tier 1: Primary option, but in instances where the local brand is so entrenched, the Tier 2 and 3 provide guidance on how to continue to using the local name while bringing it in-line with the Vision Source brand look and feel.

Recently, Ross and Katherine Via along with Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation of Crockett County, and (AITC) Ag in the Classroom Founda-tion held its annual Farm Fest at the Via farm. This was also simulcast via live feed to Columbia TN. Two-hundred forty

4th graders from Alamo City, Bells City, Gadsden Elementary, Maury City Elementary, and Friend-ship Elementary attended. This actually was a community collaboration with the help from Mid-South Co-Op of Alamo, L&H Gin of Alamo, UT Ext. Service of Alamo and the Boards of Education from Alamo and Bells. The children learned “Where does it come from?” Cotton, Wheat, Corn,and Soybeans were discussed from the many presenters that were on hand for the daylong event. Those presenters were as follows: Corn Commodity Presenter Richard Buntin – UT Ext. Director of Crockett County, Soybean Commodity Presenter Julie McKelvey – TN Soybean Association Commu-

nications Specialists, Wheat Commodity Presenter Jeff Via – UT Ext. Fayette County, Wheat Commodity Presenter Matt Fennel – Regional Field Director TN Farm Bureau Federation, and Cotton Commodity Presenter Joe McKinney – Re-gional Field Director TN Farm Bureau Federation. Those who volunteered their time were Crockett County Farm Bureau represented by Travis Vance - Agency Manager, Troy Matthews – Agent, and Sherry Riggsbee – Secretary and the AITC Foundation. The children were amazed when the presenters would tell how each commodity played a role in our everyday life. For instance “Did you know” One bale of cotton can make:

215 Jeans • 249 Bed Sheets • 409 Men’s Sport Shirts • 765 Terry Bath Towels • 1,217 Men’s T-Shirts1,256 Pillowcases • 2,104 Boxer Shorts • 3,085 Diapers • 4,321 Mid-Calf Socks •6,436 Women’s Knit Briefs

21,960 Women’s Handkerchiefs • 313,600 $100 Bills A bale of cotton also weighs about 480 pounds (http://www.cotton.org/pubs/cottoncounts/what-can-you-make.cfm?renderforprint+1) The teachers were presented with certificates to The Learning House and hand lotion. The children received soy-bean bracelets and pencils. These items were furnished by Crockett County Farm Bureau, The Soybean Association, and Ag in the Classroom. The Alamo High School Class of 1972 celebrated the 40th anniversary of its gradu-ation at the Old Country Store Restaurant in Jackson, Tennessee, on Saturday, October 6.

Despite the cold, rainy weather outside, the restaurant was warm and inviting as 23 former classmates and 15 spouses and guests gathered in the Barnside Room from 5:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m.

A Class Memorabilia Table displayed an amazing collection of items from our school days, 1960 through 1972. Class photos from First Grade Graduation Night, old textbooks, Class Yearbooks, souvenirs from the Junior/Se-nior banquets, handbills from the 1972 Senior Play, old newspaper articles, photos and news-paper articles from the past class reunions, old FFA jackets, and other “historic” items drew classmates’ attention as they relived those wonderful days at AHS.

The Class of 1972 was the largest class to ever graduate from Alamo High School with 79 graduates in the proces-sional the evening of May 4, 1972. The Class has stayed in touch more than many classes officially celebrating its 5th, 10th, 20th, 25th and 40th anniversary reunions.

Classmates attending the 40th reunion were Bruce Colvett, Danny Trimmer, Deborah McLean, Evelyn Speer Goff, Gail Lovelace, Gail Lowery Harwell, Glenda Crutch-field Davis, Jeff Reece, Jerry McGarity, Kay Reasons Stout, Lavern Dare Smith Parrish, Louis Cox, Lynn Ackermann, Marsha Moore Betasi, Mike Pipkin, Pam Brasfield Austin, Rachel Antwime Blust, Sandra Yearwood Cowan, Shelia Holt Swearingen, Teressa Morris Butler, Terry Pigue, Tom-my Powell and Vanessa Simmons Bright.

The Class of 1972 took a few moments to remember our seven deceased classmates and lit candles in their mem-ory: Archie Mathis, David Quinn, Diane Dawson, Jerry Ma-bens, Jimmy Stephenson, Joe Cox and Patrick Palmer.

Classmates volunteered to form a Reunion Planning Committee to work out details for the next reunion - tenta-tively scheduled for 2014. Those with e-mail addresses will be receiving a Class Directory to make it easier to stay in touch. The evening’s program concluded with the singing of the AHS Alma Mater.

Several classmates, who preferred that the evening not end so soon, gathered for a relaxed, after-hours visit at Twist at Jackson’s Doubletree Hotel.

Moments with a MinisterAN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

A man named V.P. Black sacrificed his entire life for the noble work of preaching. He became known around the United States for preaching a sermon entitled “An Attitude of Gratitude”. What a timely topic! Paul reminded us in the first chapter of the book of Romans at verse twenty-one, “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God, neither were thankful…”. What was the result of their ingratitude? They became futile in their hearts and their foolish hearts were darkened!Just one generation ago it was common for our children to address adults by saying “sir” and “ma’am”. Also, the words “please” and “thank you” were mandatory. I very well remember discipline being in order for refusing to use these 4 phrases and I am sure you do as well. In a time when manners are minimal and meanness is rampant we would do well to revisit this virtue of being thankful. Thanksgiving is the only appropriate response for what God has done! Think about it…He is our Creator (Isa. 45:12), our Sustainer (Isa. 26:3), and our Redeemer (Isa. 44:6)! Because of these basic facts, we have no reason to be anything but grateful! We then become grateful for our existence (Eph 5:20), grateful for our daily bread (I Tim. 4:4), and thankful for our salvation (Rom 6:17). Being thankful requires us to focus on the blessings and the benefits that God provides for us. However, when we lose our perspective regarding thanksgiving, our relationship with God begins to suffer. Thanksgiving also brings about a change of attitude in our lives! You may be thinking, “How in the world does gratitude affect my attitude?”! Thanksgiving leads to humility! (Pro 29:23) To say “thank you” means acknowledging someone else’s contribution to your success. When we recognize that we have not gotten to this place in life on our own is acknowledging gratitude. Show me a grateful person and I’ll show you a humble person! Thanksgiving also leads to dependence on God. (Phil 4:6) Prayer and thanksgiving go hand in hand. The thank-ful person is definitely the praying person. When we are thankful in prayer, we recognize our reliance upon God in all things and recognizing our dependence on God keeps our attitude from turning inwardly (selfishness). Also, thanksgiving leads to joy! (Psalm 97:12) People who are thankful are content, rejoice, and are happy! If we fill our thoughts with gratefulness, there will not be any room for ingratitude or discontent. And finally, thanksgiving motivates us into action for the welfare and benefit of others. When we are thankful, do we not want others to have the same blessings? (Ps. 107:22) When we are thankful for food, clothing, health, shelter, a great life and salvation when we want others to have the same!

Count your blessings instead of your crosses;Count your gains instead of your losses.Count your joys instead of your woes;

Count your friends instead of your foes.Count your smiles instead of your tears;

Count your courage instead of your fears.Count your full years instead of your lean;

Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.Count your health instead of your wealth;

Count on God instead of yourself. – Unknown I am thankful for all the readers of the Crockett Rocket and for your continual encouragement. If this writing benefits just one, it will all have been worth it. I hope each of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday spent with family and friends reflecting upon our tremendous blessings!

Be Thankful,Stephen Sutton

The Crockett County High School Library celebrated Teen Read Week™ with special events and programs aimed at encouraging area teens to read for the fun of it. Thousands of libraries, schools, and bookstores across the country held similar events centered on this year’s theme, It Came From the Library. Teen Read Week™ is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YAL-SA), the fastest-growing division of the American Library Association. “Teens have more activities to fill their free time than ever — web videos, social networking sites, video games, afterschool activities, athletics —and increasingly high expectations in the classroom,” said librarian Mindy Nichols. “It’s important that we show them that reading is some-thing that’s fun and relaxing that they can do for free. And that reading for fun can translate into better performance at school.” CCHS students celebrated TRW 2012 with a variety of fun-filled events. On Monday, students were encour-

aged to follow the library on Twitter or Posterous and to download the DestinyQuest App, putting their library at their fingertips. Patrons who did so were entered into a drawing; the winners were Emily Johhnson and Keyston Norfork. . On Tuesday, students were asked to trade their scariest book confession for a cookie and to “Srop, Drop, and Read” during the day. The library also enjoyed breakfast with Mrs. Bethany Giles’ ESL class, as they were the first to peruse and check out some of our latest Spanish titles. Wednesday brought the recognition of our top five patrons: Justin Williams, Octavious Swift, Deanna Williams, Jessica Lonon, and Ashley Trapp, and the deadline for our “Very, Very Spooky Bookmark Contest,” where students were asked to design their own bookmark illustrating the week’s theme. The winners included Erin Juarez (1st place), Jennifer Hunt (2nd Place), Claire Cooke (3rd Place), Jake Williams (4th Place), and Joey Plunk (5th Place). The

faculty also enjoyed a Bagels and Books breakfast, with the display of over 150 new nonfiction titles added to the col-lection in their disciplines of study. On Thursday, students participated in the scariest books trivia; Emily Daniel was named the winner. To conclude TRW 2012, students and faculty dressed up to participate in the “It Came from a Book” Character Costume Contest. The winners were Harlee Henderson as The Mad Hatter (1st Place), Morgan Reeves as Where’s Waldo (2nd place), Kelly Young as Anne Frank (3rd place), Olivia Floyd as Hermoine (4th place), and Mattie Manzanarez and Leandrea Lovelace as Thing 1 and Thing 2 (5th place). Students also attended the Campfire Literary lunch, complete with a ghost story and s’mores. The CCHS library would like to thank all students and faculty who participated in and supported the week’s events. “Teen Read Week was a monumental success for advocating reading and literacy among our teens. It is our hope that these teens will continue to access the resources of their school and public libraries in pursuit of a lifetime of reading and learning.”

Crockett County Veterans Memorial- Veterans Day Tribute -

The changing of the leaves reminds us that fall is here; and with fall comes Veterans Day, a day to recognize all veterans who have ever worn the uniform. Veterans Day 2012 is no different. One thing that is different this year though is the fact that Veterans Day, Novem-ber 11th, is on Sunday. The Crockett County Veterans Association will hold its annual program on that Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial. It’s a time when everyone should put forth an effort to show appreciation for our veterans. Veterans Day 2008 was the day when 2,000 attendees viewed the dedication of our Veterans Memorial, which was erected to honor all veterans of Crockett County, past and present. Since that day when we recognized 79 Killed in Ac-tion and 4519 other servicemen and women, we have added the following: three KIA, 302 additional service personnel in 2009; 76 additional service personnel in 2010; 41 additional service personnel in 2011; and this year we are dedicating the names of three more KIA and 53 names of additional service personnel. The memorial idea was a vision of Mrs Jeanne Tritt Mathis, who believed that the veterans from Crockett County deserved recognition for their patriotic service to this great country. She passed away before her dream became a reality. Those of us who remain should endeavor to honor the addition of these new names by attending this year’s ceremony. Leanne Braddock will be our keynote speaker this year, and Frank Loyens will perform America the Beautiful and Taps on the flute. This would be a good time to bring the grandchildren out and show them some history. Attendees are asked to bring their lawn chairs for seating. Anyone can still access the complete listing of all names on our memorial on the internet at: http://tnroots.com/tn-crockett/military/memorial/memorial.html Click on any underlined veteran name & you also can see a photo. You can help us put a face to the names on our memorial by submitting photos of veterans in uniform. Our Friends of the Memo-rial campaign has been very successful too. Please contact a member of the Memorial committee for more information on either of these items. These words of President Harry S. Truman are on the wall that’s part of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.: “Our debt to the heroic men & valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.” These words still ring true today & apply to everyone who’s ever served.

On November 8th - 11th The Crockett County High School Little Theatre, 2014 Hwy 88 South Alamo, TN. will welcome Disney The Little Mermaid Jr. This musical based on the 1989 Disney film will be performed by sixty 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students from Alamo City School. The lead characters this year are Abby Ward - Ariel, Beth Ann Roberts - Ursula, Luke Shelton - Sebastian, Drew Riley - Flounder, and Tyler Riggsbee - Prince Eric. This musical is directed by Sarah Conley. The assistant director is Angie Bushart. Amy Hutchison is the business/stage manager along with Paige Joyner as the set design/construction. Rhonda Butner is the costume designer and had to create 120 costumes this year, with each child wearing two. “Rhonda has a talent for giving the kids what they need without damaging their pride. They are always excited to get their new costumes” stated Sarah Conley. She also stated that she has incredible talent this year and can’t wait for everyone to see this won-derful performance. “Arts are not for the sake of the talent, it is for building self esteem and self discipline. Arts also gives each child the belief in themselves that they can handle anything that comes their way”, stated Debra McClain. The performing arts program excels students and is just as important as sports although most kids par-ticipate in both, added Sarah Conley. “We have lived in three other towns and this is a rare place.

These children’s lives are enriched here by our performing arts, music, and arts programs. I’ve seen my shy child blossom over the last two years because of the arts here”, stated Kim Ward, Mother of Abby Ward. This will be an amazing musical and each child will en-joy the support from all who will attend. If you enjoy the musical, tell the administration, school board, and the people that provide the funding for our schools. Let them know how this program enriches the lives of these children.

“I was reluctant to have my timber cut after hearing the horror stories about others. But Andy Norris was different. I didn’t know hIm, he had been highly recommended to me. Sure enough, Andy did exactly what he said he would do. He paid on time. And he cleaned up afterward. I would recommend Andy Norris Logging without hesitation.”
