Presidents Report

Hi,

Wow the end of the year is fast

approaching! Time to reflect on

all the fantastic photography that

we have seen since the beginning

of the year. The End of Year BBQ

is a wonderful opportunity to

meet the club members and have

time for a chat which is often on-

friends are welcome as it is a ful-

ly BYO event – food and drinks.

We look forward to seeing many

competition is a fitting finale for

the year’s work.

Next years’ program is attached

“Now and Then’ Photographic Exhibition

The Lancefield and Romsey Branches of the Bendigo Bank have very kindly granted the Macedon Ranges Photographic

Society some funds to prepare and exhibit a series of photographs of the Lancefield and Romsey regions.

The Project:

The project - ‘Now and Then’ – provides an opportunity for the Macedon Ranges Photographic Society Club members to

work with historical images from the Romsey and Lancefield regions to produce an exhibition of printed artworks and video,

that showcases the regions changes over time.

Photographs from the ‘then’ can be found from a range of different sources, one of which we hope will be the Romsey and

Lancefield Districts Historical Society. Others may include images from local resident’s personal archives.

The key aims are to:

Showcase comparison images - two (or perhaps more in some instances) versions of the same place: the past and the

now

Images of the region from the historical archives would be re-photographed and then photographed in their in

their current state.

Images will be produced as separate, combined images and in video format

Demonstrate the many similarities yet differences that exist in the ‘Now’ and the ‘Then’.

Involve the public in seeing their own region as it was and is now - to explore some of the hidden gems and gain a better

understanding of their own region.

Potential Benefits:

The project will involve the public and create a greater appreciation of seeing and understanding their own community

through new eyes

The marketing of the event and its success will attract the interest from the wider community bringing more people into the

region that has benefits to local businesses

The project will be a focus for the camera club members to be involved in the Romsey and Lancefield region when photo-graphing the scenes of the region in its current state.

“Now and Then’ Photographic Exhibition Cont

There will hopefully be a liaison developed between the Macedon Ranges Photographic Society Club members and the

members of Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society.

Raised awareness of the camera club in this region.

Timeline:

2018:

Meet with representatives from the Romsey and Districts Historical Society Inc to discuss the options to source the

‘THEN’ images which would be rephotographed (originals to be kept by the Historical Society).

Distribute the ‘Then’ images to club members to use as points of reference for shooting the ‘NOW’ images

Source two venues to host the exhibition: one in Romsey and one in Lancefield. Dependent on the venue the exhibition

(and any associated hire costs) could be on display for at least two weeks in each location. The exhibition is to held

in Autumn – possibly April/May

2019

January to March: Work with club members to photograph the series of images

April: Image selection, printing, mounting/framing and preparing for exhibit

April/May: Exhibition – in two time periods: 29 April-12 May and 13 -26 May (TBC with arrangement with the venues)

We have deferred the Marathon until 2019. It will be the In-House Set Subject competition topic in March, which

will give club members lots of time to think about and shoot for the topics within the Marathon. The November

tech night will also be an opportunity to look at similar types of challenges and how you might prepare them.

You are to take up to six images – participants should try and shoot all 6 but this is not a requirement.

All images should come from the Macedon Ranges area

The selection of challenges work for those less experienced through to some that may involve a greater challenge and skill set.

The idea is to take one image that meets the two set criteria.

The topics for the Marathon are:

The Kitchen: Abstract

Raindrops: Floral

Bridges: History

Silhouette: Landscape

Graffiti: Colourful

Critters: Eyes

The November Tech Night will focus some time on creating some similar images

What is the Marathon?

Photo Essay - Gwalia, a Ghost Town in Western Australia

The living ghost town of Gwalia is the doorway to a unique experience of Western Australia’s rich mining history.

The little settlement that grew up around the Sons of Gwalia Mine in the late 1890s thrived until the final whistle blew on 28 December 1963, closing the mine and putting 250 men out of work. Gwalia’s 1200-strong population fell to just 40 in less than three weeks.

Today, the abandoned homes and businesses of Gwalia create a tangible snapshot of a vanished era and way of life.

Just four kilometres north is the town of Leonora, which remains the hub for the area's mining and pastoral industries. Many of the businesses and families in Leonora have adopted individual buildings in Gwalia which they maintain.

Most of the buildings are open and unsecured. They are furnished and decorated with items re-

tained when the town was abandoned.

The Gwalia experience is three-dimensional: step inside the quaint cottages built of corrugated

iron, timber and whitewashed hessian.

Imagine a miner’s wife cooking dinner on the cast iron range, while her husband toils far un-derground to support his family .

Look through the windows of Mazza’s Store, where the shopper could buy every-thing from two pounds of flour for the day’s baking to a length of fabric to make a frock for a dance at the State Hotel – or wander through Patroni’s Guest Home next door, for decades a home from home for

single men employed at the Sons of Gwalia Mine. Once one of the largest gold mines in Australia, the Sons of Gwalia Ltd oper-

ated from 1897 to 1963. Its first mine man-ager was a young American mining engi-neer named Herbert Hoover, who later be-came the 31st President of the United States. The mine manager’s house Hoover designed, and which bears his name stands on the summit of “Staff Hill” in the Muse-um Complex. Nearby, the old mine administration build-ings in the shadow of Australia’s only surviving timber incline headframe now house the Gwalia Museum’s extensive col-lection of objects, docu-ments and photographs which sketch the history of the mine and show-case the diverse cultures and commercial and do-mestic life that created Gwalia’s enduring legacy.

Today, Hoover House is a luxury Bed and Breakfast and function venue where guests, museum visitors and travellers can enjoy coffee on the verandah over-looking the vast open pit of the modern gold mine on the site of the historical Sons of Gwalia Mine. Surrounded by echoes of its golden age, Gwalia’s mining story lives on.
