NOVEMBER 2011 P R E S E N T E D B Y B S B F R I E N D S ISSUE 2
held their 2nd International Family Fair on November18 from 10:00 - 3:30 pm. The school heaved with a palpable sense
of community spirt as it celebrated its diversity and school spirit. The fair was officially opened by the British Ambassador, his Excellency Mr. Iain
Lindsay in the presence of his Excellency Mr. Mohammed Siraj, the Ambassador of Jordan, his Excellency Mr. Taha Abd
al-Kader, the Ambassador of Palestine and his wife, BSB owner Dr. Esam Janahi, Head of School Mrs. Karen Moffat
and Chair and Vice Chair of the BSB Friends Clauss Niazi and Natasha Haque. The Pakistan Ambassador, his Excellency Mr. Jauhar Saleem and his
family also visited the fair later.
This year, the core organising team was a group of 22 truly dedicated parents. An impressive 300+ parents, staff and
students helped on the day to welcome over 3500 visitors and raise BD 11,000! Last year’s funds produced our new playground - this year’s are earmarked
for sound & light systems for the Performing Arts Departments..

The international theme, complimented this term’s focus on global citizenship and showcased many of the school’s 65
nationalities. Bahrain created a mini majlis and treated guests to Arabic coffee, dates, henna and a live falcon. The
USA’s mini-museum displayed memorabilia, pictures of iconic moments in history and a live Betsy Ross sewing
the 1st American flag. China delighted the hungry with homemade dumplings and authentic Chinese games. Cleopatra welcomed visitors to Egypt where they
could sample sweet Basboosa and play Build a Pyramid & Wrap the Mummy. Holland highlighted Vincent Van Gogh,
their Queen and footballer Marco Van Basten and offered a special raffle for KLM tickets to Amsterdam. Mexico
delighted visitors with a display of products from their country. Iraq had a beautiful display highlighting the ancient
culture of Mesopotamia and painter/sculptor Mohammed Ghani Hekmat. Pakistan thrilled with amazing Biryani
and live singing. With Petra as a
backdrop Jordan shared their hospitality with traditional food & drink. Lebanon also offered an amazing
selection of delicacies for visitors to enjoy. Malaysia had 12 games to play; identifying famous places and indigenous
animals. Morocco displayed lovely dresses, shoes and jewelry and offered homemade sweets. India delighted with
home-cooked food, ethnic trinkets and an audio visual on yoga. Palestine had a beautiful stall full of food and organised a
dhabka (traditional dance) for the stage. Scotland served traditional drinks and shortbread, while Wales offered welsh
cake. Both displayed great information about their beautiful country. Turkey organised a traditional dance on stage.
Italy had a wonderful display of Italian cuisine.
At the heart of all was an exceptionally
creative set of tables where children were helped to create Peg Dolls from around the World.
“Before shifting to Bahrain eight months ago, I had apprehensions...but working with the Friends on this Fair has already built a deep affection for the place and the people.” BSB Parent Volunteer

The Fair’s entertainment spread over 2 stages this year and included performances from all age groups.
Stage1 focused on an array of internationally themed performances as well as numerous instrumental and vocal
contributions from the Seniors. Stage 2 showcased the skills of BSB’s new Sports and Performing Arts Academies
with extracts from Annie, Akido, African Drumming and other instrumental performances.
The BSB International Family Fair is
unique to have students running most of the game stalls. Volunteers from different year groups manned a total of
25 games and two bouncy castles.
New to the Fair this year, and an oasis of calm, was our Tea Experience.
Visitors selected between a Moroccan, English, Japanese or Chinese tea and waitstaff of senior students dressed in
traditional attire pampered them with the relevant tea ceremony. A Grab-and-Go option was also available.
What would a Fair be without Santa’s Grotto, and the Junior teachers did not disappoint! Children could visit Santa
and make a craft while they waited their turn. Right next door was a Present Room, sponsored by the Infant
teachers, where only children could enter and, with a little help, could select and wrap presents for their parents.
There were over 180 raffle prizes to be won on the day. Thank you to all our Raffle Prize Donors. Al-Jazira Supermarket, Al-
