AAA Board and Staff Information

Dr. Kay Johnson, Superinten-dent of Greenwood School District, has been selectedto recceive the 2012 Arkansas Su-perintendent of the Year Award. Dr. Richard Abernathy, AAEA Ex-ecutive Director, presented the award to Dr. Johnson at a meet-ing of the Greenwood Board of Trustees on September 15.

Dr. Johnson had not been previ-ously notified of the award and was surprised when Dr. Aberna-thy, ADE staff, former Superin-

tendents of the Year, and family members entered the room during the board meeting.

Dr. Abernathy noted that Dr. Johnson’s leadership skills are evident to all who know her. He stated, “I have known Kay for over 20 years and she has always exemplified what you want in a school leader. She always puts kids first and is the true definition of a servant leader.”

Dr. Laura Bednar, Assistant Commissioner of Learning Ser-vices with the Arkansas Department of Education, says of Dr. Johnson, “She is an exceptional leader who is wise and thoughtful in her decision making and always keeps students at the center.”

Dr. Johnson’s Background• Superintendent, Greenwood School District, 2002-present• Area Secondary Center Director, University of Arkansas – Fort Smith, 1991-2002• Superintendent, County Line School District, 1991-99• Elementary Principal, County Line School District, 1986-91

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) National Superintendent of the Year program, sponsored by ARAMARK Education, ING and AASA, pays tribute to the tal-ent and vision of the men and women who lead the nation’s public schools. Candidates are judged on the following crite-ria: leadership for learning, communication, professionalism, and community involvement.

Each state association of school administrators selects a State Superintendent of the Year. These superintendents are then in the running for National Superintendent of the Year and will be recognized and honored at the AASA National Conference on Education in February in Houston, Texas. Dr. Johnson was chosen from 239 school districts and 16 charter schools in the state of Arkansas.

NFHS Launches First Rules Application for Mobile DevicesINDIANAPOLIS, IN – The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), which has written and published playing rules for high school sports throughout its 91-year his-tory, has released its first rules application for mobile devices.

The 2011-12 NFHS Basketball Rules Application (App), which is now available in the Android Market, combines the 2011-12 NFHS Basketball Rules Book and the 2011-12 NFHS Basketball Case Book into one searchable mobile app. The material is cross-referenced to display related content, and is offered as a companion piece to the printed books.

Developed in partnership with ArbiterSports, the 2011-12 NFHS Basketball Rules App is available at this time for An-droid devices only; however, the iPhone/iPad version will be released soon. In addition, apps for NFHS rules in other sports will be coming later this year and into 2012.

“We are excited about this technological advancement in our offerings of rules-related material,” said Bob Gardner, NFHS executive director. “As the national leader of playing rules for high school sports, this is a natural progression in today’s fast-paced, online world. We believe these rules applications will be a great supplement to our printed publications.”

Currently, the NFHS writes playing rules for 17 sports for girls and boys competition at the high school level, and annually publishes about 25 rules books, case books, officials manu-als and handbooks. More than 1.3 million copies of rules-related publications are distributed annually throughout the world.

In addition to basketball, the NFHS writes playing rules in the sports of baseball, cross country, field hockey, football, boys gymnastics, girls gymnastics, ice hockey, boys lacrosse, soccer, softball, spirit, swimming and diving, track and field, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

NFHS playing rules are written specifically for varsity com-petition among student-athletes of high school age and are intended to maintain the sound traditions of the sport, preserve the balance between offense and defense, encour-age sportsmanship and minimize the inherent risk of injury for participants.

The 2011-12 NFHS Basketball Rules App is available for purchase through the following : 2011-12 NFHS Basketball Rules App.

AAA Continues its Support of Hunger Relief AllianceThe Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, KATV Channel 7, Stal-lion Transportation Group, US Bank and the Arkansas Activi-ties Association are sponsoring a food drive at War Memorial Stadium during the high school championship football games December 2, 3, 9, 10. The “Spirit of Giving” is an annual food drive that benefits anti-hunger organizations throughout Arkansas through the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance.

The first phase of the drive is a head- to- head competition between the teams on the field. The food collected by your school will be distributed by an anti-hunger organization in your community, helping your friends and neighbors. An award will be given at half-time to the team that donates the most food.

The second phase is an overall competition. The team that raises the most food overall will receive a $1,500 donation! This donation is courtesy of Stallion Transportation Group based in Beebe, Arkansas. The 2008 winner was Des Arc High School, who raised over 3,200 pounds of food for their community. In 2009, Lonoke High School raised almost

5,500 pounds of food for their friends and neighbors. Texar-kana won the award in 2010 with 1,010 pounds of food.

The US Department of Agriculture ranks Arkansas as having the third highest incidence of hunger in the nation, and the need is growing. Almost 500,000 of our fellow Arkansans are affected.

“Let there be no mistake, hunger touches every community in our state, and affects friends and neighbors. An estimated 1 in 6 Arkansans doesn’t know from where they will get their next meal,” according to Rhonda Sanders, Executive Director of the Alliance.

As you are preparing to come support your team on the field, please remember to bring a non-perishable food donation. Or collect food at your school during the week and bring it on the spirit bus. Collection points will be conveniently located at gates 1 and 7. Your support will strengthen your team and your community!
