THE LAST 18
MONTHS HAVE
BEEN A ROLLER
COASTER RIDE!
Tracy Haworth Even though we’ve had unexpected turns and excitement, I wouldn’t trade the past two years at Genesis World Mission for anything. Every time I visit my dear friends in Kenya, I am re-minded and humbled about how important this work is: we are mak-ing a real difference with them be-cause of our time spent planning, networking, travelling, and serving.
REFINING OUR FOCUS AND ZEROING IN ON SOLUTIONS
NOVEMBER 2010
Two Kenyan Projects The international goals of Genesis have changed dramati-
cally in the eight years I’ve been here. We’ve done everything from hosting Opera-
tion Christmas Child in the warehouse, facilitating short-term trip medical supplies,
and leading our own teams overseas, more than a half dozen of them. Currently, we
are settled into a very focused effort in two communities in Kenya: Burangi in the
Malindi district along the coast and Ndumberi, just 15 miles north of Nairobi.
This empowerment enables communities to mobilize and make choices that benefit
their fellow residents. We have adopted a participatory community driven model
that ensures sustainability and reduces financial dependency on outsiders. Over the
past year, I have had the pleasure to be in Malindi every three months or so,
strengthening our partnerships and developing networks that are paving the way to
bring improved health care, clean water and proper sanitation to many villagers.
(Continued on page 3)
WE ARE STRUCTURING OUR WORK WITH THE BELIEF THAT WHEN
COMMUNITIES ARE EMPOWERED – HEALTHY TRANSFORMATION OCCURS.
GARDEN CITY COMMUNITY SURVEY
Come listen to Boise State University Nursing Leader-
ship students report interim results of a needs assess-
ment they’ve been performing for the Garden City
Community Clinic. The presentation will take place in
the Garden City Council Chambers at City Hall (6015
Glenwood Street). These findings, along with your
input, will help us respond to community needs. All are
welcome. For more information, call Hillary at 384-
5218 x12. Tuesday, December 7—9 AM

A PUBLICATION OF
HI!
GARDEN CITY COMMUNITY CLINIC & VOLUNTEER PHYSICIANS NETWORK
WELCOME R.N. DENISE EWING Marching towards 2020 Vision At the annual dinner last March, we set out
a vision of patients who are surrounded by
a team of professionals, each practicing at
their highest level of training to care holisti-
cally for each person. One of our steps to
accomplish that was to hire a registered
nurse to be on our team.
This month, we are happy to announce the
addition of Denise Ewing to our staff. She
is a Bachelor-degreed RN with a Master of
Arts in Religion/Spiritual Formation from
Northwest Nazarene University. With pre-
vious experience managing a clinic in
Tonga and serving homeless and low-
income populations, Denise brings a
unique set of skills to help us move to-
wards our goal.
If you’d like a DVD copy of our 2020 Vision
go to genesisworldmission.org and click
on DONATE NOW for information.
We are grateful for the four years of ser-
vice LPN Gus Catherman provided our
patients at the Garden City Community
Clinic as the clinic coordinator. We wish
him well as he moves on to new fields.
A young diabetic woman experienced
several miscar-riages prior to
becoming a patient. After being seen at
the Garden City Community Clinic,
she received diabe-tes education and
help controlling her blood sugars.
And now she’s a mommy!
“Without the clinic, I would
never have had my baby.”

THE SEAONS OF CHANGE
02 NOVEMBER 2011 : INSPIRING HEALTH
Hillary Roethlisberger With the change
in temperature from sweltering summer to
chilly fall, I have been inspired to pull out my
Christmas music. The change in seasons
always leaves me with warm memories of
Christmas past as well as the excitement of
Christmas futures. Garden City Community
Clinic is in the same transitional season. We
reminisce about the days in the trailer and
glass warehouse. I think about the past vol-
unteer medical directors, the countless volun-
teers, and our beloved patients who manage
to smile their way through some
of the most difficult circum-
stances. Remembering
this rich history helps to
build excitement and to
illuminate where we are
going.
Hope for the Future I look forward to continued partnerships with
volunteers and community leaders as we
build on this strong foundation. We will work
alongside patients who have ideas to develop
diabetes cooking classes, mentoring groups,
and walking groups. Staff and volunteers are
investigating new technology that will em-
power both patients and volunteers to man-
age chronic health issues online and to im-
prove communication with local hospitals and
specialists. And most importantly, we are
growing based on the needs expressed by
our community so that gaps are filled and the
possibility of good health becomes a human
right, not a privilege.
Barbara Mahr In five short months since
VPN has blossomed open in Canyon County,
67 new patients have received medical care
and diagnostics through the gen-
erous participation of Caldwell
and Nampa specialists. From
x-rays to surgeries, we are
moving forward with coordinating access for
the medical attention needed by patients of
Terry Reilly Health Clinic-Nampa and Canyon
County Community Clinic.

People’s
Choice
Award
In Kenya, we have worked with Touch Africa
International, the Malindi Rotary, medical pro-
viders from the Malindi District Hospital, and
the District Minister of Health, to name a few.
We have recently added another partner –
MAP International which works in many coun-
tries with a model of community development,
resulting in a “Total Health Village” The foun-
dation we’ve laid in Malindi has paved the way
for this village to be their next site. We will use
our networks to help build and develop a clinic
with the Malindi community, in combination
with bringing clean water, proper sanitation
and health education to the villagers of Ma-
lindi.
I am sure that this year will be no less of a
roller coaster ride, but am humbled and grate-
ful to be a part of sharing God’s love with His
people; people that have shown me the face of
God; people who are resilient and work hard;
people who, when given a voice, can transform
their community enabling their families to
access health care and empower healthy life-
styles.
Our local partnerships for this project are also growing, and include Eastwind
Community Church, area district Rotary clubs, and the potential for a local university to
send mid-level medical students on rotation to the area. We will also work on shipping a
container of medical equipment for two clinics and for the district hospital’s ICU.

TOP SHELF BBQ COMPETITION
A big thank you to the teams, volunteers
and guests that made our first Top Shelf
Community BBQ a great success! Over
80 people turned out for some tasty sam-
ples of five different burgers. These in-
cluded a Cajun style burger, two Hawai-
ian Burgers, the Hamburgler’s Surprise
and a BSU-themed blue-bunned, orange
buffalo chicken burger.
We appreciate all the teams that entered:
Thirty-One Gifts, Saint Al’s Toast-
master’s Club, Waterstone Mortgage/
Garden City Chamber of Commerce,
Key Bank and Idaho Independent
Bank. Thanks also to the celebrity
judges – Chef Lou Aaron, Mayor
John Evans and Dr. Karl Watts.
KENYAN SURGEON TO KEYNOTE DINNER
Dr. Kavuludi, the in-country director of MAP Inter-
national Kenya, will speak at the annual Genesis
fundraising dinner and auction. In his presenta-
tion, Kavuludi will describe tools which empower
local communities to identify and prioritize their
human health needs. Listeners will be informed
and inspired by Dr. Kavuludi’s experiences and
charisma.
CHANGED BY TRAGEDY
As a 9-year-old boy growing up in Kenya, Julius
Kavuludi thought little of the lack of medical
care available to him, his family, and his friends.
That was the way things had always been; that
was just the way things were. But when one of
his young classmates died, his mindset began to
change. “I knew then that I wanted to become a
doctor.”
MAP SHARES DNA WITH GENESIS
“I believe the MAP methodology reflects the val-
ues we’ve always espoused at Genesis World
Mission: building partnerships within the commu-
nity,” said Dr. Karl Watts, founder/president of
Genesis. “That’s why we’re an making effort to put
Dr. Kavuludi in front of multiple audiences during
the week following the dinner.”
BREAK OUT OF THE WINTER DOLDRUMS
Everybody loves a party and we’d like to provide
an excuse to break in your new spring wardrobe
and connect with friends you haven’t seen all
winter. Our silent and live auction will return with
new experiences for you that will support healthy
living for others.
INSPIRING LOCAL LEADERS
Dr. Kavuludi (leaning and writing) en-
gages Burangi villagers in an exercise to
determine greatest community needs.
This participatory process results in
higher buy-in for long term solutions that
will be supported financially by villagers.
