NEW YORK Sometimes a chair is not just a chair, but a softly organic, cantilevered form, perhaps sprouting a leaf to one side.
A table can resemble a volup-tuous jungle plant brought from an alien planet.
A bench becomes an inviting squid resting on delicately rounded tentacle legs.
Wendell Castle, 83, some-times dubbed the father or grandfather of the American art furniture movement, has, throughout his 57-year career, employed creative new tech-niques in works that are both sculpture and furniture.
Now, in Wendell Castle Remastered, the Museum of Arts and Design explores Castles most recent, digitally crafted pieces. The show will remain on view through Feb. 28.
In what sometimes resembles a forest out of a Dr. Seuss book, Castles latest works are displayed side-by-side with his earliest ones, which inspired them.
Even though my work has an element that is a seat or a desk, it also has other elements that have nothing to do with any function. But its a set. They go together, the artist is quoted as saying in the exhibit catalogue.
Says Ronald T. Labaco, who curated the show: He loves the idea of planting a furniture seed that sprouts into a chair or lamp or table.
Earlier works featured include some of Castles pieces from the 1950s and 60s, when he was an innovator in the process of stack lamination: He built forms from carefully sized and stacked wood, and then honed them by hand to create eye-popping organic pieces.
Some of the earliest works
in the exhibit include spindly sculptural pieces made from gunstocks, including Scribes Stool, which helped launch Castles career. It was first exhibited at this museum, then called the Museum of Contem-porary Crafts, and so has come full circle. After seeing the chair in 1962, the dean of fine and applied arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology invit-ed Castle to be a professor of furniture design, a position that allowed him access to the
facilities he needed to grow and experiment as an artist. Castle still lives and works in the Rochester, New York, area.
His sculptural approach to furniture has evolved in recent years, when Castle has com-bined his handcraftsmanship with the latest in robotics, including an enormous milling robot named Mr. Chips.
In his latest works, carving, rasping and finishing tech-niques are combined with digit-al techniques like 3-D scanning, 3-D modeling and computer-con-trolled milling.
It is nothing short of aston-ishing that he is now making some of the best work of his long career, work that attests to the value of deep expertise and experience, says Glenn Adam-son, a director of the museum.
Many of the more recent pieces feature cone-shaped forms, stacked or layered, with results that Castle says are too complex to have been realized using his earlier method of stacked lamination.
The enormous 2015 lamp High Hopes, for example, resembles a Seussian tree or giant mush-room. It is almost 9 feet tall, and the tentacle-leaves at its base have been hollowed out to house programmable, multi-colour lighting elements. The lamp is typical of many of Castles
latest works in its voluminous size, achieved with robotic assistance, combined with expert hand finishing.
In addition to the art furni-ture pieces displayed across two floors of the museum, two bronze, bench-like sculptures Wandering Mountain and Temptation, both made in 2014 have been installed outside the museum in Columbus Circle, for the public to sit on, lean on and enjoy.
The exhibit also includes two video clips, excerpts of footage taken for an upcoming film by Alison Castle, the artists daugh-ter. One is a portrait of the art-ist, including footage from the 60s. The other is about Castles process.
If you think about it, his early laminated works were really a kind of proto 3-D printing, Labaco explains. And his recent works, using digital technol-ogy, also feature a lot of hand finishing. You can really see that handcraftsmanship and tech-nology go hand in hand. Thats one of the important points this show is trying to make.
In the catalogue, Castle says, I cant see any reasons that, if a tool was available, why not use it? While he says he is intrigued by 3-D printing, bronze and wood are the two best materials to make furniture out of.

While resolving to lose weight or quit smoking are popular New Years resolu-tions, many people decide the dawn of a new year is a great time to get organized.
The holiday season can interfere with ones ability to stay organized. The arriv-al of new gifts, decorations decking the halls and overnight guests can make it seem like rooms have been turned upside down. But the end of the holiday season provides a great chance to sort through belongings and start organizing in earnest. Men and women who want to get organized can consult with a profes-sional organizer or tackle the job on their own, potentially enlisting the help of others in the household.
Step 1: Assess the damage.It can be difficult to get organized
without first taking inventory of your home. Go through all of the rooms in the house and decide what your goals for each room are, jotting those goals down as you go.
See if the rooms have more storage potential than youre utilizing, particu-larly those rooms that are overrun with items. Storage can include shelves on walls, new furniture or modified closet spaces. Again, jot down your ideas so you can refer back to them later on.
Step 2: Set up a sorting plan.Organizing may involve sorting
through belongings and getting rid of things you no longer use. One of the eas-ier ways to handle sorting is to purchase three different containers or make three different piles. The first one will hold items you will keep, the second includes items that can be sold or donated and the last will house items that you will discard or recycle. Separating belongings in this manner can help you stay on task and remove some of the stress from get-ting organized. Simply move the contain-ers that are no longer needed from the room when youre ready to organize the remaining belongings.
Step 3: Schedule your cleaning days.It may take a couple of sessions to get
certain rooms clean, so plan ahead for that. For example, you may need a day to sort and toss items, another day to prep the room with organizational enhancements and yet another to put everything back. Separating tasks into manageable sessions will help you reach smaller goals that eventually add up to your larger goal of getting more organized.
Plan project days when you can devote time with few, if any, distractions. You may want to ask a friend or family mem-ber to take care of your children or pets for a few hours while you are tackling your tasks.
Organizing around the trash pickup schedule can help, too. This way dis-carded items are quickly out of sight and out of mind.
Step 4: Prepare your day.Have all of your necessary equipment
on hand in advance of Day 1. This elim-inates having to go on the search for sup-plies, which can prove distracting. Make sure you are well rested and have eaten a hearty meal. Set an alarm for how long you want the organizational session to go. If you work until you reach the point of fatigue, you may not be inclined to finish on another day.
Step 5: Reward yourself.Every time you finish an organizational
session or goal, treat yourself to some-thing nice, such as a dinner out or a mas-sage. Choose something relaxing that makes you happy.
Step 6: Repeat the process.When one room is organized, establish
your plan for the next room. Once you see the success that comes from the first room, you can use that as motivation to do the others at your own pace.
Getting organized may take some time, but it can be well worth the reward when a home is clean and everything has a place.
