What is it, and what is its purpose?

2. The Association cont’d …

Cut and DrySimply put, the Association exists to protect the public and practising Cosmetologist.

During regular salon and spa services, both the client and the professional can be at risk of contracting chemical burns, infections, and even diseases carried by blood-borne pathogens.

This isn’t said to scare you!

But it does highlight why a solid education system must be in place so that Cosmetologists performing services on the public can do their job properly; that is to say, to do so safely.

Why reinvent the wheel?3. Apprenticeship Pilot

At the moment, hairdressing is regulated by the Association. Students are required to complete an education-based form of training. Let’s break it down…

The Current “only” Training Model:A cosmetology student in Nova Scotia must attend 1,500 hours of formal training in a registered school of cosmetology and successfully complete the Provincial Examination (pass mark of 70%)

Exam Components:• Written: Theory, Bacteriology, By-Laws• Practical: On live model

Further training is encouraged post-grad to earn a higher cosmetology designation.(Ex: Cosmetologist vs. Master Cosmetologist)

But, what if there was a different approach to learning?

The Cosmetology Association of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency Partner for a Pilot Project!

Why Partner?

• The NSAA is the regulating authority in Nova Scotia for a designated trade and for the Red Seal trade.

• The Cosmetology Association is the regulatory body for cosmetologyoccupations in Nova Scotia.

• So, both the Association and the NSAA have a shared responsibility for the Hairstylist trade.

The “Hairstylist” trade will harmonize across Canada by 2020, and Nova Scotia is one

of the final two provinces that has yet to get on board.

A “New” Training Model

The Apprenticeship Pilot presents to the cosmetology industry opportunities to:• Offer innovative and flexible training • Offer a more hands-on learning approach outside the classroom• Be as inclusive as possible• Contribute to labour market needs• Increase job mobility

Jointly, after many years of conversing, the Association along with the NSAA want the same end goal … success for learners!

The Apprenticeship Pilot will allow an individual interested in a cosmetology career to choose the format of learning that they need to succeed.
