PASTOR’S REFLECTIONS

During this past six months, we have celebrated our 130th anniversary year in a variety of wonderful ways – Ice Cream Social, International Desserts, Ethiopian Festival, Outdoor Worship. For each event we have been very intentional about inviting the people of our communities to these free gatherings. We have had many visitors. Many seeds have been planted. We have been a gracious and welcoming church. I recently received an old newspaper article from 1972. Trinity was celebrating its 90th anniversary with a 4:00 special worship service. There was a large picture of the church placed beside the article. Rev. David Isaacson was the pastor and Rev. Harold Jansen, who was the assistant to the Bishop of the old ALC (a predecessor to the ELCA) was a speaker. Joint choirs from six Lutheran churches sang. On November 18 at 10:30, we will be celebrating our 130th anniversary with a festival worship service of thanksgiving for our blessings. The bell tower and front steps will be dedicated. Our choir will sing. Music and remembrances from our past will be shared. A Mission Fair in fellowship hall will display the many ways in which we share God’s love, with each other and with the community and world. I hope that you will join us. It is wonderful to look back and to celebrate our heritage. It is also good news that our Lord is still active in this place. Jesus is present each and every Sunday as we teach our children, hear his word and partake of his sacrament. He is present in the faces and hands of those who reach out to help others in so many ways. The Holy Spirit stirs our hearts and leads and guides us. Hymn #720 in the ELW reminds us “We are called to act with justice, we are called to love tenderly, we are called to serve one another, to walk humbly with God.” My prayer is that the body of Christ in this place will include you as we move forward. BY THE GRACE OF GOD THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING GOOD GOING ON AT TRINITY!!

On Saturday, October 6, Trinity held an Ethiopian and Eritrean Festival in the parking lot of the church. 161 people attended the festivities which included dance, food, singing, and native dress. It was a joyful event for those from the Trinity Fellowship, friends from the Emmanuel Disciples Church in Boston, and friends from the community. Everyone who came enjoyed the day.

UPCOMING AT TRINITY

ALL SAINTS SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 4: On this day we remember all who have died in the faith, as we are all saints. Memory boards will be available for you to display pictures of your loved ones. VETERAN’S DAY - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 11: Veteran’s Day falls on Sunday this year. We would invite all of our veterans to come forward during worship so that we can thank you for your service. Feel free to come in uniform or wear a hat or other symbol of your branch of service.

130TH ANNIVERSARY WORSHIP - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 18: On this Sunday we will officially celebrate the 130th anniversary of the founding of this congregation. SALVATION ARMY BELL RINGING – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24: Trinity has

We would like to continue this tradition and ask for your support in volunteering for an hour or hour and a half shift between the hours of 9 am -7pm at Shaw’s in Westbrook on Sat. Nov. 24th. Jane and Brenda will have sign-up sheets and will be looking for some volunteers to help with this effort.

POTPOURRI

MEET WARREN: Warren resides at Springbrook. He has been a member of Trinity for 91 years. He lived and worked his entire life in Westbrook. He worked at the S.D. Warren Paper Mill. Warren married Millie in 1946. Warren has two daughters – Karen and Lynn and son-in-law. He has four grandchildren, Emily, Lynn, Bode and Owen. Warren loves to watch sports and it doesn’t matter who wins as he likes both teams. Warren enjoys drinking coffee. Stop and say “Hi” to Warren and he will always offer you a cup of coffee.

SOCIAL MINISTRY HAS BEGUN the annual Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Drive. Information and boxes are available in fellowship hall. Boxes are filled with items that are then sent as Christmas gifts to children around the world who are living in poverty. The boxes need to be returned by November 18th.

SOCIAL MINISTRY IS ALSO COLLECTING gently used coats, hats, gloves, mittens, jackets and hooded sweatshirts for girls, boys, ladies and men. Trinity will distribute the winter items at the Community meal.

ALL LADIES AND GIRLS OF TRINITY ARE INVITED to a baby shower for Malissa in the Fellowship Hall of Trinity Lutheran Church, Westbrook. Given by – Alitza, Kat and Sue It’s a BOY!

PLEASE SAVE YOUR USED PRINTER CARTRIDGES. We are allowed to turn in 10 cartridges a month at Staples. At approximately $3.00 a cartridge, this adds up in rewards and saves money for us in the Office Supply budget. Please deposit them in the bag under the table by the secretary’s office marked “drop off for used ink cartridges.” Thank you.

A CAUTION FROM YOUR COUNCIL: There have been people showing up in the church building on Sunday morning asking for money. All requests for assistance should be directed to our treasurer, Jane Sinclair, or the pastor. We do not give out cash nor do we keep cash in the building. Jane does a careful background check on those residents of Westbrook whom we might assist, typically with a voucher for a specific purpose. While we want to help persons with a legitimate crisis, unfortunately there are people who go from church to church on a regular basis with variations of stories and sometimes threats. Please do not encourage these people by giving them money as they will keep coming back or send their friends. Donations to the Food Pantry or Good Samaritan Fund are more helpful ways to provide assistance with food and utilities to those in need.

NEWLY CONSTRUCTED FRONT STEPS TO THE CHURCH have been completed. Take note when you come to Trinity and see our newest renovation. Please be aware that there is now a step down when you leave the church by the front door.

THANK YOU FROM:

FAMILY OF RHODA: We want to thank you for all the prayers and expressions of sympathy sent to us during this sad time. Rhoda was so devoted to Trinity and very proud of her church heritage. Special thank you to Pastor Karen for her support and also to Betty who sang Rhoda’s song so beautifully and Doug who was Rhoda’s favorite Sunday morning reader of the scriptures. God bless you and thank you again.

DAVID: Blessings to all of you – I put the (prayer) shawl over my headboard on the bed over my head. David.

SISTER CAROL WEAVER: To my Rejoicing Spirits Friends: I will miss you all, but keep you in my thoughts and prayers – especially on the third Sunday of the month! With your gift card I bought a new pair of running shoes and gave a monetary offering to the National Rejoicing Spirits Office. Grace Happens. Love, peacer & joy, Sister Carol & Gracie.

WAYSIDE FOOD PROGRAM: Thank you for your generous gift of $450.00 to support Wayside Food Programs’ “Under One Roof” campaign. Your donation for new kitchen tables will allow us to consolidate our operations into one location, including the building of a kitchen. This project will increase our organizational capacity through savings on rent, fuel and staff time, as well as benefit our community. Thank you so much for your support in this exciting new endeavor. We look forward to seeing you in the near future at our open house. Sincerely yours, Mary, Executive Director.

JUST FOR LAUGHS I was visiting my daughter and son-in-law last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. “This is the 21st century, old man,” he said. “We don’t kill trees or waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad.” I can tell you, that bloody fly never knew what hit it....
