The of the network is: purpose • To increase and improve Nordic interaction among students, teachers and researchers in the field of soil science. • To improve the diversity and quality of graduate education in the field of soil science in the Nordic countries. • To create a motivating environment for Nordic students in the field of soil science. Jensen (student, KVL) Board Members of the SoilSoc Network are teachers, researchers and students at: * KVL - The Royal Agricultural and Veterinary University, Copenhagen, Denmark * HU-AF - The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Helsinki, Finland * LbhI - The Agricultural University of Iceland * UMB - The Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Ås, Norway * SLU - The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden Researchers and teachers from partner institutes are invited in the SoilSoc network as linked nodes. Establish and benchmark a website that will serve as a forum for sharing all the relevant information on graduate courses and overall student mobility in the field of soil sciences in the Nordic countries. • Provide an annual graduate level summer course in soil science, preferably interdisciplinary and problem based. • Provide information on current research programs in the Nordic countries in the field of soil sciences to facilitate student mobility with regards to thesis work and practical training for graduate students. • Create opportunities for sharing and exchange of teaching expertise. Activities of the network: Achievements year 2006 and activities : • Planning meeting in Helsinki in March • NOVA/MECBIO graduate course “Bioremediation of boreal soil” June 5th till 15th hosted by Kristina Lindström in Helsinki • Network meeting in Iceland November 16-19 to finalise the plans on the , hosted by Oláfur Arnalds • Graduate course “Molecular techniques in environmental microbiology”, funded by graduate school Focus on Soils will be hosted in Uppsala December 5th till 9th by Sara Hallin (summer schools) will be organised in the future: “Soil degradation, erosion and restoration” hosted at LbhI, Iceland by Oláfur Arnalds “Global change and biogeochemistry of soils - from field to laboratory” hosted at UMB, Norway by Åsa Frostegård, Jan Mulder and Lars Bakken Possibility to host a joint course in China, focus on soil problems of an industrialising country Joint Nordic Master's Programme Soils and Society “SoilSoc” Annual graduate courses 2008 2009 2010 For on the SoilSoc network don’t hesitate to contact your own country node (the respective member of the board) or the network leader Kristina Lindström ([email protected]).
