ANNEXURE - 3 Item No. 1.13 – Proposed production and manufacturing process under expansion 1. Production
1.1 Intermediate Products (TPA)
DRI .. 660,000
Sinter .. 2,256,700
Hot Metal .. 1,464,300
Pig Iron .. 546,200
Liquid Steel .. 1,631,300
1.2 Finished Products
• Wire Rods .. 500,000
• Medium Section .. 650,000
• Light Section .. 371,300
2. Manufacturing Process
2.1 Process Route
The proposed integrated iron and steel plant will adopt
conventional blast furnace-electric arc furmace-billet/bloom casting (BF-EAF-Caster) route and DRI-Induction furnace-billet caster (DRI-IF-Caster) route. The process of liquid steel making is pyro-metallurgical, having operational temperature 16000C to 17000C.
2.2 Process Description
2.2.1 The process steps for carbon steel products in sequence are as follows:
- Agglomeration of Iron Ore fines by sintering
- Hot Metal making in BF by reduction of sintered, lump iron ore and pellets with coke in presence of additive materials
- DRI making in DR Kiln by direct reduction of Iron Ore pellet with coal
- Oxidation of carbon present in the hot metal by oxygen blowing in presence of lime in BOF for producing liquid steel.
- Refining of liquid carbon steel by addition of micro- alloys to get the desired chemistry of liquid carbon steel for casting
- Continuous casting of refined liquid carbon steel to billets / thin slab.
- 6 -
- Further rolling of thin slab to produce different types of long products and flat products.
2.2.2 The supporting process units as planned would be –
(i) Lime and dolo calcining
(ii) Coal Washery
(iii) Captive Power Plant and
(iv) Water Treatment Plant

ANNEXURE - 4 Item No. 1.14 - Facilities for storage of goods or materials Solid raw materials like iron ore, coke, limestone etc will be stored in open stock pile within the plant boundary. BF gas will be stored in dry type gas holders. Raw water supply from Sheonath River coming through pipeline will be stored in reservoir within the acquired area. The slag and other solid wastes after reuse in the plant will be temporarily dumped in the earmarked area outside the plant boundary for future use.
- 8 -
ANNEXURE - 5 Item No. 1.15 - Facilities for treatment or disposal of solid wastes or liquid effluents Solid wastes disposal
Non-hazardous solid wastes (NHSW)
It is estimated that about 2.21 MTPA (approx 6070 TPD) additional NHSW would be generated by the facilities proposed under the expansion to 1.5 MTPA. The quantity of such NHSW would be as follows:
BF Slag .. 453,900 TPA EAF Slag .. 224,600 TPA IF Slag .. 13,400 TPA LF Slag .. 19,600 TPA Dusts, Millscales, .. 58,100 TPA Sludges Coal Tailings .. 451,500 TPA CPP Ash .. 993,693 TPA
Disposal of NHSW
It is planned to market 100 per cent of BF slag to the ready-mix concrete companies after converting the slag into Ground Granulated Blast furnace Slag (GGBS) and Dry Slag. EAF and IF slag would be used as construction material. 100% of the mill scales would be used in the Sinter Plant. It is also planned that maximum amount of dusts and sludge would be used in the sinter plant.
Hazardous wastes (HW)
The HW would comprise oil sludge, ETP sludge and other combustible wastes. ETP sludge would be disposed through authorised agency for disposal of Hazardous Waste. Liquid effluents
The liquid effluents will be of two types, namely, (i) Mill effluent containing suspended solids, oil and grease, and (ii) Gas Cleaning Plant effluent containing suspended solids. Each production shop generating this type of effluent will be equipped with treatment plant of adequate capacity. Treated effluent will be utilised in slag cooling, dust suppression and other non-production use. The treatment schemes will be suggested in EIA Report.
