Seniors are oftencivically and politically involved. They vote and they volunteer ata higher rate. 6. Wisdom. 7. More empathy and better social skills. People in their 60s arebetter at imagining different points of view, thinking of multipleresolutions and suggesting compromises. 8. Senior discounts. They are often for the types of services thathelp seniors stay engaged, like entertainment, dining andtransportation. 9. A sense of accomplishment. Raising children, being married, serving in the military and retiring from a job after years of servicecan be the foundation for contentment. The pumpkin has a colorful history Pumpkins are native to the western hemisphere and have beencultivated in North American for 5,000 years, according to theHistory Channel. The Iroquois Indians were quite skilled in growing the famousmember of the gourd family, an especially useful crop since mosteverything in the pumpkin is edible. While the men hunted, the women tended to the crops. Each springthe ground was prepared and the women carefully dug holes forthe planting. Into each hole they placed a fish along with a corn, bean and pumpkin seed. The fish fertilized the ground and the cornstalk provided support for the bean plant to climb on. The pumpkin plant offered ground cover to keep the weeds out,and the roots of the bean added nutrients to the soil. By summerand autumn, whole fields were filled with corn, beans andpumpkins growing together. When the first colonists arrived to America, they survived partlyby trading with the Indians for food. The Pilgrims made their own contributions as well. In the case ofthe pumpkin, they not only gave it the name we know today, butinstead of cutting pumpkins into strips and baking them, they cutoff the tops, scooped out the seeds, and filled the hollow withvarious ingredients including milk, honey and spices. Once filled, they replaced the tops and baked the pumpkins in thehot coals of a fire, thereby inventing an early pumpkin pie filling.Later, they baked the concoction in a crust to give us their versionof the pie that we know today.

Correct your vision to reduce the risk of falls Want to reduce your chance of falling? Then wear your glasses!People who need glasses but don't wear them can be moreoff-balance and have a greater chance of falling than people withnormal or corrected vision. A study by the University of California Davis, led by Dr. JeffreyWillis, shows that vision and balance are highly integrated in thebrain. In another study, this one by The Johns Hopkins University Schoolof Medicine, 4,590 adults aged 40 and older were checked for theirvestibular balance. The vestibular system maintains balance, posture and the body's orientation in space. As many as 35 percentof adults over age 40 experienced some form of vestibulardysfunction. Vision plays an important role in the system. One third of individuals age 65 and over fall in any given year.Individuals with who don't wear their glasses have higher ratesfalling than those with normal vision. Antibiotics for COPD Patients admitted to hospitals for chronic obstructive pulmonarydisease (COPD) are usually treated with steroids andbronchodilators. Now, a study of 53,900 such patients finds that adding antibioticsto the treatment resulted in significantly lower mortality rates. Thestudy was published in the journal Chest. Meanwhile, another study found that a five-day, low-dose courseof corticosteroids to treat exacerbations is as effective ashigher-dose, longer-course treatments. These studies were alsoreported in the Journal of the American Medical Association. DORA-22 works in a different way from existing sleeping pills In the not-too-distant future, a new medication could helpinsomniacs fall asleep and sleep soundly without the memoryproblems or groggy feelings that other sleeping pills can bring.

Billed as bringing "a good night’s sleep without the side-effects,"the tablet, known only as DORA-22, works in a different way. Researchers have discovered orexin, a compound that keeps thebrain alert. Dora mimics what happens in the normal system, where orexin's alert signal goes away at night. But in some people,it doesn't. As one sufferer says, "I can just open my eyes in themiddle of the night, get up and do my work as if it's the middle ofthe day." Asking why is usually counterproductive As people try to work through difficult situations in their lives, they sometimes focus on "Why." They ask: Why was there atornado; why did I get laid off; why was there a car accident? Whyme? Modern psychologists say they are asking the wrong questions."Whys" keep them in the victim state and focusing on placingblame. They should begin to focus on how to get on with theirlives by asking "What" and "How." These questions focus onsolving problems, and the answers keep you moving forward: • "What should I do now?" • "How can I make my situation better? “ • "What can I do to get through this and come out a strongerperson?" Doctors at Psychiatric Associates in Indianapolis say asking howand what questions helps you focus on the future instead of thepast. You begin to realize that you have the power to makechanges. They recommend honestly admitting to yourself what yourthoughts and feeling are. Allow yourself to experience the crisis.Ask yourself the right questions and develop a plan of action.
