Nouns• A noun is a word that names a person,

place, thing or idea.

– Persons: Mrs. Platinsky, teacher, student

– Places: Lazar Middle School, classroom

– Things: desk, football

– Ideas: happiness, self-control, democracy

Common and Proper Nouns• A proper noun names a particular person,

place, thing or idea.– It always begins with a capital letter.

• A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places, things or ideas.– It generally is not capitalized.

Concrete and Abstract Nouns

• A concrete noun names a person, place, or thing that can be perceived by one or more of the senses (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell).

• An abstract noun names an idea, a feeling, a quality, or a characteristic.

Concrete nouns poster, music, beans, heat, Florida

Abstract nouns love, fun, freedom, pride, beauty

Singular and Plural Nouns

• A singular noun names one person, place, thing or idea.– Example: wish, box, dog, ring

• A plural noun names two or more persons, places, things or ideas.– Example: wishes, boxes, dogs, rings

Forming Plural Nouns• Add s to most singular nouns to make the plural

form.– Example: uncle--uncles

• Add es to singular nouns that end in sh, ch, s, ss, or x to make the plural form.– Example: lunch--lunches, boss--bosses

• If a noun ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and add es to make the plural form.– Example: balcony—balconies

• If a noun ends with a vowel and y, add s to make the plural form.– Example: display--displays

ways. If a noun ends in o, add s or es to make the plural.
