LBS SAILING ASSOCIATIONThe sailing club has experienced somechanges as we ended a very successful2018 season. Dan Brockman decided toresign his post as Commodore that heheld for almost 10 years. The entire or-ganization wants to thank Dan for hisdedication, enthusiasm and leadershipthat brought LBSSA to a new level of in-volvement by many LBS residents whonow enjoy the sport of sailing.

Pat Flynn has accepted the role as thenew Commodore with Paul Trottier asVice Commodore. Together the new of-ficers have plans for new activities andan enhanced schedule for 2019.

LBSSA will start the new year with a Wel-come Aboard Party on February 9th at5:00pm at The Lodge. All LBS residentswho are interested in learning to sail arewelcome to attend. You will get an op-portunity to meet some of our existingmembers and listen to an overview of thesailing club. There will also be a presen-tation of LBSSA Heritage and memorabletales of sailing in competition. Pizza andsalad will be served. Feel free to bring anappetizer to pass and BYOB.

SHORT STORY GROUPBrain research has a theory that inform-ative and stimulating conversation stim-ulates more areas of the brain thandoing a crossword puzzle!! The objectiveof the Short Story Group is to encouragemeaningful conversation by reading ashort story and then meeting together toanalyze, summarize and elaborate on themessage in the story. The stories are un-usual...and different! The conversationand the exchange of ideas is lively, in-structive, and rewarding. All opinionsare respected and appreciated.

We will be meeting on the 2nd and the4th Thursdays of the month at 2:00pmat The Lodge in The Fireside Lounge.

LBS LADIES’ BOWLING LEAGUE We've completed 8 weeks and are stillhaving fun!

As of the start of December, Truly Yours(Kay Beaty and Phyllis Hahn) took firstplace away from the Cosmos (Karen Ramagnano, Kay Gillespie and ReggieAndrews) but that will likely changeagain in the next weeks. Third placeholder is Vodka McGovern (Jackie Andrew, Ann Deja and Becky McGovern).Hot Toddies (Janis Trisko, CharlottePoje and Sandi Young) are tied withWallbangers (Carol Kanak, Eileen Whiteand Teddi Wolfgram), and Sex on theBeach (Carole Baranski and Ro Levy)are tied with Moscato (Chris Day, SueMagiera and Kathleen Voigt). But theSpritzers (Nancy Claassen and CarolIrons) could end up with all the dough.

Scratch game highs are Karen Ramag-nano, Laurie Feldman and Harriet Kum-merow. Hi Scratch Series is held byJackie Andrew, Chris Day and KayBeaty. Handicap Game highs are BeckyMcGovern, Judy Samaras and CharlottePoje, and High Handicap Series is Phyl-lis Hahn, Carol Irons and Kay Gillespie.

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday lunchbuffet at Sideouts, and cheered to our-selves, to a great day, good food andfriends.

ORIENTAL MAH JONGGThe game is played like Rummy. Drop-in’s are welcome! We play the 2nd and4th Thursdays of the month in the ClubRoom at The Lodge from 2pm–5pm.

NEEDLEPOINT/CROSS STITCH/KNITTING CLUB

Instead of linen or Aida cloth, perforatedpaper is excellent for cross stitch. Youcan find it at Hobby Lobby andMichaels. It comes in different colorsand is very versatile.

This Holiday I am making gift tags –very easy and looks wonderful onwrapped packages. You can actually putthose adhesive gift tags from the store onthe back of the finished perforated paperin order to put the name of the recipient.There are leaflets with patterns and alsoonline downloads for perforated paper.

LBSCC WOMEN’S NINE HOLEGOLF LEAGUE

Calling all women golfers…Are you newto LBS? Have you considered playinggolf at LBSCC, but been putting it off?Would you like to know more about the LBSCC Women’s Nine Hole GolfLeague? The league’s activities continuethroughout the “off season” with theLUNCH BUNCH getting together dur-ing the winter months.

Twenty-six members gathered on December 4 for a Holiday Celebrationat Ciao Baby in Barrington. Festive surroundings coupled with great food,good friends and a “White Elephant”Exchange made for a perfect beginningto the Holiday Season. Thanks to JackieGuinane for planning the event. 2019 SOLO/COUPLES 9-HOLE FRIDAY LEAGUE

We’re back! It’s never too early to startthinking golf, great dinners, outstandingprograms, and fellowship. The Co-Chairs are hard at work planning the2019 season.

Due to format changes to this newsletter,articles are now limited to 200 words andapplications are no longer permitted. Assuch, applications for enrollment in theleague will be available on the LBS web-site in the coming weeks. We also plan onattaching a 2019 application in an emailto former members in late January.

We are always looking to enhance ourmembership base. If you are single ormarried, golfer or nongolfer, this groupis for you! You can join for golf mem-bership ($50 pp) or as a social member($30 pp.) More information will beavailable in upcoming newsletters, LBSClub Fair and the Ice Breaker (dates yetto be determined.) LBS 9 AND DINE GOLF LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP 

The 9 and Dine Golf League is a group ofresidents and nonresidents, who get to-gether one Friday a month and play golf,followed by dinner. The league is open toall, we will pair you up if you do not havea group. The league also has a SocialMembership, which allows the nongolferto join us for dinner and participate in so-cial functions. If you golf and your spousedoes not, the nongolfer can join you laterfor dinner. If you’re single please join thegroup for golf and social:

When: Friday, starting May 17, 2019—June 14, July 12, August 23, September20, October 3.

Tee times will be 12:30pm for those play-ing 18 holes and 3:00pm for those playing9 holes, followed by appetizers and dinnerat 6:00pm Golf club restaurant.

WATER AEROBICSWater Aerobics Group will begin theNew Year with improved organizationfor our exercise equipment.

The Group recently purchased two binsfor the exclusive use of the Water AerobicsGroup to hold the barbells and noodles.The attractive brown containers will beconveniently situated indoors rather thanoutdoors. Members will use the barbellsand noodles as needed and then return all equipment to the containers and secure them.

Water Aerobics also utilizes a CD playerto play a variety of music in the back-ground while the exercise routines arecalled out by the Instructor. The routinesare performed with minimal conversa-tion, but occasional laughter.

Each member also uses their own specialtyswimwear, towel, water shoes and gloves.New members however only need theirswimsuit to start the program.

Make a New Year’s resolution to join us.Everyone is welcome to join the LakeBarrington Shores Charter Water Aero-bics Group. The Indoor Swimming Poolis Exclusively In Use by the Water Aero-bics Group for the period of time8:00am to 9:00am M W F. The firstclass is free, others are $5.00 for LBSresidents.

Saturdays 9:45–11:00amYoga—In this all-level class we incorpo-rate yoga postures and breathing exerciseto promote flexibility, strength, balanceand relaxation while continuing to finetune alignment in poses. Adaptationsavailable.

Mondays 4:30–5:45pmThursdays 5:00–6:15pm

Yoga/Yoga Flow—These classes incorpo-rate a series of yoga poses and breathingexercises providing a more physical pro-gram moving from pose to pose while stillfocusing on posture and alignment. Thisclass uses weight-bearing poses and morechallenging transitions to build strength,endurance, flexibility, improve balanceand relaxation. All students are welcome,at your own pace. Variations will be given.

• SEAL LEAKS, CREVICE CRACKS &EXPOSED AREAS AROUND PIPES!

Be especially watchful of the areasaround windows, doors, and your foun-dation. Caulk cracks or install weatherstripping where appropriate.

• CHECK OUT YOUR CHIMNEY! If you plan to use your fireplace thiswinter, make sure your chimney is cleanand no critters have made themselves athome there.

• WINTER VACATION PLANS OR ASNOWBIRD?

Keep your thermostat at 55° F or higher.Drain your pipes of all water by openingthe faucets. Flush your toilet to clear thewater from the bowl & tank. Considerpouring Nontoxic Antifreeze in the toi-lets & tanks to prevent them from crack-ing & freezing. Close the flue to yourfireplace. Make sure you have an “InCase of Emergency” person on file atthe management office. It is also helpfulif that person has a key to your home toenter it in case of that emergency.

• CLEAN REFRIGERATOR & DEFROSTFREEZER

Remove all food from the refrigerator &freezer. Unplug the refrigerator, propopen the doors to prevent mildew.

• SHUT OFF WATER SUPPLY TOSMALL APPLIANCES!

Where possible turn off water supply todishwasher, washing machine & ice-maker.

• UNPLUG APPLIANCES! TV’s, Microwaves, all small appliancesto avoid the risk of fire caused by afaulty switch or a rodent gnawing on awire!

• ENTRY INTO YOUR HOME WHILEAWAY!

In the event of an emergency; alwaysprovide your Management Companywith permission to enter your homewhile you are away.

• WALKING & DRIVING IN SNOW & ICE!Always use extreme caution!

HOLIDAY DECORATIONS AT LBSPlease note the following rules regardingexterior holiday decorations:

Section IV. A. 2. d. 3) “Holiday lights andexterior decorations are only allowedfrom Thanksgiving to January 31st.”

4) “Decorations for other holidays, whenappropriate, will be allowed one weekbefore and one week after the holiday.”

5) “No signs for any purpose are permit-ted on any building, vehicle, in CommonElements, or on Common Property except for signs placed by LBCHA or Condominium Associations.”

Also, section IV. D. 3. d. states “Personalproperty shall not be left on Common Elements.”

These rules were established by the Association in order to preserve, protect,and enhance your community.

In essence, tasteful exterior decorationsare allowed at the discretion of your in-dividual Board of Directors within yourlimited common elements (such as yourfront door/entry and patio/deck/balconyareas) from November 22nd throughJanuary 31st.

WINTER TIPSWinter is here. Many people do notthink about getting ready for winteruntil after the first cold spell, but fall isthe best time to get your homes readyfor winter.

• REPLACE YOUR FURNACE FILTER!This is a project that’s especially impor-tant in the winter for warmth. By check-ing the filter on a monthly basis andreplacing it as needed, your furnace willheat your house more efficiently, savingyou money on utility bills.

• BE PROACTIVE ABOUT PLUMBING!To weatherproof your outdoor plumb-ing, shut off the supply of water to out-door spigots and drain them. Roll upyour sprinkler hose & store it for thewinter.

• KEEP GARAGE DOORS CLOSED TIGHTWater pipes could be in the slab of thegarage. Those pipes could easily freezeand cause a pipe to burst.

FREE CHRISTMAS TREE PICK-UPWaste Management will provide “free” pick-up of liveChristmas trees on the third Wednesday of January. Your treemust be out for disposal on that date and meet the pick-upstandards as noted below. Otherwise, you will need to callWaste Management at 800-964-8988 to arrange for specialpick up—an additional charge will apply.

• The tree must be free of ornaments, garland and otherdecorations.

• Wreaths with wire cannot be composted. Dispose withregular garbage.

• Do not place your tree in a bag as the trees are com-posted. Trees in plastic bags will not be collected.

• Trees must be no more than 6 feet tall and shouldweigh less than 50 pounds. If your tree is more than 6feet tall and/or weighs more than 50 pounds, thenplease cut your tree into sections that are no more than6 feet in length and that weigh less than 50 pounds.Trees will be tagged and left on site if they are too bigor bulky for the truck.
