REPORT

GIBRALTAR ADDS THE DIAMOND DRILL TO MINING

Operation of

No.2 Tunnelling Coy., R.C.E.

10 Mar 41 to 10 Sep 42.

J.G. Tatham, Major,Officer Commanding,

No.2 Tunnelling COY.,R.C.E.

CONCLUSIONS.

1. The major mining problem of the R.C.Es. atGibraltar is to make holes for blasting. This conditionis brought about by working with insufficient air endspare parte tor the Leyner machines. Try &8 W. may, 1nthe past 12 montha operation w. have never been able tokeep more than seven maohines working at one time. Ouraverage tor that poriod 1. tive. It therefore hes beennecessary tor us to use the diamond drills to assIst inthis work.

The petrol driven diamond drills ars the 100~&nswer to this problem. Where ventilation wIll allowthey are put to work, And although drilling slower thanthe Leyner machines, wIll drill oft any given amountwithout air consumption.

Ths air driven diamond drills being slightlyslower end consuming slightly more air than the Leynermachines .111 work any place, regardless ot ventilation.SInce we are alway8 ahort ot Leyners these muchinoaalthough 1888 economical are a grunt help In our work.

So far the l~ inch hole drilled at 31 to 4 footcentera and not more than 75 - eo teet long has beenthe most .atisfactory. The detailed data collected todate indlcates that this arraignment will require 1.2pounds ot explosives per toot ot hole per tan at muokbroken. This comparOB favourably with Canadian statistics from 1933 to 1940 of 1.3 to 1.1 pound. explosivesper ton mined.

The moat satisfactory bla.tingbeen to load 40 to 50 feet of hole solidusing prima oord over the entire length.is not available the use of C.E. primersintervals 1s recommended. All holea aretoly.
