Dear Member,

Welcome to this first edition of the Bear Facts 2011. To all members and their respective families please have a beneficial, harmonious and safe 2011 as you navigate the year just begun.

This time last year I had the absolute privilege of working and socially engaging with a man who I believe was and always will be one of the finest human beings I have ever met. I speak of none other than Barry Thomas Alliston, the President of norths Group. Barry passed away suddenly in the early hours of 11 December, 2010 from a massive heart attack at the age of 70 years.

To Barry’s daughter Diana and her family and Judy his partner, I once again express to you our sorrow for your loss. He was a truly remarkable man and one I can say was genuinely without fault and loved by all who came in contact with him. On a personal note, I will sorely miss his friendship, wisdom, counsel and the generosity of his ways.

Tony Salier, the Deputy Group Chairman and long time friend of Barry’s, captured in some detail in his eulogy at the funeral service, Barry’s life and the outstanding contribution he played in the lives of his family, Norths, the Bears, friends and the club industry all of which he was so intensely proud. Tony has very graciously made available the eulogy which I have reproduced on page 4 for everyone to read and remember this outstanding man by.

Moving Forward

Mark Holman, the former deputy chairman, long time member of norths, norths Baseball Club and a self employed chartered accountant by profession has stepped into the role of Group Chairman. Mark has the support of a strong Board, management and staff to assist him in carrying out his responsibilities and duties.

AGM Notice

I have posted a formal notice in this journal advising that the Annual General Meeting of the Club is to be held on Monday, 16 May, 2011 at 7pm at norths, Cammeray and by video link to seagulls Club, Tweed Heads West.

This year, only those members who have opted to receive a hard copy of the Concise Financial Accounts and Reports will in fact receive a copy by mail. All other members can access them via the norths website www.norths.com.au or can collect a copy from reception on presentation of their membership card.

seagulls Club Renovations

The construction of a state of the art Fitness Centre to be named Revolution is well advanced as I write this column, as are the Futsal Courts (indoor soccer). These new facilities will clearly rank amongst the best in the open market and club industry. Enquiries are already open for membership of Revolution and what will be on offer and names are being taken for the soccer teams

that will contest the various indoor competitions.

For Revolution Health & Fitness Centre enquiries contact - Liane Stanton on 07 3270 2777 www.revolutionatseagulls.com.au

For Futsal enquiries contact - Alistair Miller on 07 5536 0827 www.seagullsfutsal.com

The Productivity Commission

As a club industry we continue to be attacked from all corners of the globe, yet all other forms of gambling appear outwardly to be condoned and, in many instances, supported. Furthermore, these other forms of gambling are nowhere near as regulated to protect the punter, yet we are the political football and meal ticket for some who are sole bent on destroying the livelihood of an industry that directly employs 43,000 workers.

The Productivity Commission has also virtually opened the door to internet gambling options being expanded. Anyone with a brain would know that the most dangerous way for a gambler to operate is through a credit card, yet no one has a problem with this and so desperate are online gambling companies that they offer inducements of $200 in free bets when you sign up. And what about this, often betting fine print reveals free bets only apply if the first bet is placed with a credit card. One has to ask why aren’t Xenephon and Wilkie crusading themselves on this far more dangerous gambling front? Quite frankly, it’s probably because it is

much more difficult and out of control, and a bit like illegal drugs, which for years were not acknowledged or linked to crime.

The Commission recommendation that online gambling be liberalised was based on hundreds of millions of dollars currently being lost on overseas gambling sites. What a pity the Prime Minister didn’t show the same concern for the lost gaming revenue when she did a deal with Wilkie to retain government and announced mandatory pre-commitment on the basis of one man’s demands. Options to implement the scheme include smart cards to police daily limits in all machines, which they suggest could be open to rorting, or finger printing where each gambler would be set a daily limit and a USB memory stick carrying their fingerprint to activate play. I don’t know about you, but I pay my taxes and don’t need anyone telling me what I can do with what is left over. They are literally making the playing of poker machines a criminal activity.

Wilkie has now admitted that Club revenues will reduce by up to 40% and this translates into $2.1 billion loss for this state’s 4,000 registered clubs, with Wilkie indicating this was a good outcome. Ask the NSW Government and Coalition, club members and employees if they think this is a good outcome for reform and you will get an emphatic “NO”.

The club industry does not oppose pre-commitment as long as it is voluntary. Wilkie’s pre-commitment is overkill in trying to address a problem that affects less than 0.5% of the population and would affectively mean 99% of the population who have no gambling problem would have to obtain a license to gamble. You have to be kidding. Where do we get these people from who can potentially wreak such carnage with as little as 13,000 votes? Common sense must prevail and the likes of Wilkie and Xenophon need to come to their senses quickly as the club industry will not be dictated to in such an irrational and mindless manner.

Eulogy

I am deeply grateful to Diana, Ben, Frank and Judy for giving me the special privilege of saying some words as we farewell a great Dad and Grandad and a man who, for many of us here today, was one of our closest mates.

A very sad day – indeed!

Diana has composed a tribute to her father which she has asked me to read.

She writes:

“As a little girl, Dad was that person who would be gone during the day but would come home and play Monopoly with me in the evening He was the one who took me to the beach on the weekends and taught me to surf. Every now and then he would enthusiastically take me to the football match where I would sit and read a book. Every year he would take me to the Easter show where I would be perched upon his shoulders with a birds eye view to the world.

But as I grew older, he was the one who was proud when I got my school test results, showing his mates at the club. At the age of fifteen I went through a phase where I really wanted a Galah, so I bought one for Dad for his birthday - he never got mad. He was the one I would turn to for advice - didn’t always take the advice, but I always asked him for it.

In my early 20’s when my first two cheap second hand cars proved to be lemons, and I got sick of replacing the

head gasket for the third time, I got rid of them!!! I swore I would never buy another car again, that I would just walk everywhere. Then Dad comes up the driveway in a brand new Ford Festiva and handed me over the keys. I ended up keeping that car for over ten years, ’til it was on its last legs and belching smoke. Dad came to the rescue adding stop smoke to the engine oil and drove it to the dealer for a trade in hoping the car would make it there.

Dad was always there when there was a major decision to be made. There was one occasion in particular that stands out when Ben and I had driven to Brisbane to purchase our first investment property. I sat in the real estate office with the pen in my hand and the contract in front of me. I paused and then said “Could I just call Dad?”

Twelve years ago when we were purchasing our previous property, Dad came to the auction with his cheque book as I was going to borrow from him the deposit should I be successful. I will never forget the look on the estate agent’s face when Dad wrote out a cheque for $30.00 instead of $30,000 as he was so caught up in the excitement of the auction. Every time we moved, Dad would come over and the first thing he did (being an electrician) would be to replace all the power points and light fittings before any other renovation was done.

February 2011 - April 2011 Live It Love It

love of animals morphed into a love of beer.

Barry left Crows Nest Tech High, or Crowie University as he used to describe it, at 15 and took up an electrical apprenticeship with TP Johnson – where he met up with Bob Dawson. The company went broke in 1978 – as probably would have happened to any company which employed the pair of them!

Barry and Bob worked in partnership as R & B Electrical for 15 years. Then Barry opted out, spent a short time as a courier and finished his working life at Heydey Electrical – working for his beloved Felix and Borgy, and playing Santa Claus at their annual Christmas party. He certainly had the right build and Barry was not the type to scare little children – only grown ups like Bob and me.

Although he was a hard worker all his life – even from his primary school days – Barry found time for other activities. Prominent among these were beer and golf – two activities that are almost inseparable.

Warren recalls how he, Barry and other mates played socially every fortnight and the group formed itself into the Great Northern Social Golf Club – which started out with loose affiliations with the pub on the corner of Mowbray Road and Pacific Highway and has of course become, after more than 40 years of existence, an institution with a world wide reputation.

Bob Dawson recalls that in his salad days Bazza was known as “the Beast”. I’m not quite sure why – but a clue may be found in his habit of going with his mates to a pub in Windsor in the days when you had to drive for miles to get a drink. Donny MacMillan worked as a barman and dreaded the arrival of the Beast – because after a few beers Barry would make the acquaintance of a member of the fair sex who, unfortunately, was in the company of her boyfriend. It wasn’t long before all hell broke loose.

And of course Barry loved his cars, in fact he worshipped his cars and revered Henry Ford as the man who created the world’s greatest motor vehicle – I refer of course to the Ford Falcon.

If I just had a toothache, I would call Dad. So many times when there was a problem, I’d call him on his mobile and just say “Dad....” before breaking into tears and he would find a way to make me smile.

A few months ago when my purse was stolen I phoned Dad up and he asked where I was. I said “Parked at the side of the road in Artarmon”. He then asked “What street?” I said, “I don’t know, just come and find me“, and he did! He even came with me to offer advice when I was buying a new pot and pan set in the middle of this year.

There was a time back several years ago when I had far too much on my plate with regard to maintaining several jobs. I had worked myself to the limit and I was highly stressed, so Dad took me on a two week cruise.

Every Christmas, Dad would cook up a storm and bring it over to my house. We also shared many a Sunday lunch that he lovingly prepared and brought over. We talked on the phone almost every day, just for a chat and if he didn’t call for more than three days, the next time he called I would say “hello stranger”.

Dad, you were always there for me no matter what. Even when the whole world thought I was wrong, you could see my point of view. Dad, you weren’t just my Father, you were my best friend!”

May I add a short tribute and in doing so I gratefully acknowledge the contributions not only of Diana but of Warren Morris and Bobby Dawson – two of Barry’s great mates.

Barry Thomas Alliston was born on 6 October 1940 at Royal North Shore hospital, son of Ivy and Thomas Alliston. The family lived in Roberts Street, Artarmon where Barry attended the local kindergarten and, at the age of 3, commenced a life long friendship with Warren.

Warren recalls an incident at Artarmon Primary when the class had an assignment dealing with wool. Barry’s contribution was to bring along a live sheep. In Warren’s words “the class was very excited, the sheep was very excited and the School Principal became very excited at the mess on the floor left by the said sheep.”

Diana also recalls that her father loved animals as a child. I must say that this love affair wasn’t obvious to me – I think somewhere along the way this

And his endless cruises around the Pacific. I’ve often wondered why he didn’t find it easier to write travel books than fill in OH & S reports.

On the romantic side, Barry’s efforts were restricted by his mother’s curious belief that no woman was good enough for her son.

Eventually, at the age of 26, he married Pearl. Pearl came to Australia from Croatia to assist her brother, Joe, in a business and, as Diana recalls, Pearl was able to withstand the onslaught of Barry’s mother, because she couldn’t speak English! Not long after they married they moved into 721 Mowbray Road where they continued to live as a very happy family with Diana and Frank, Pearl’s son by her first marriage.

Sadly Pearl passed away about this time last year, but recently Barry and Judy teamed up, in what, to all of us, has so obviously been a hugely successful relationship.

So there you have a short bio of Barry Thomas Alliston, but who really was Barry?

Like most men, I’ll never understand women as long as I live, but I have a theory that you can usually distil in a man one characteristic that defines him.

For me, in Barry’s case, that characteristic is passion. There is no doubt whatever that Barry was a very passionate man. I have already referred to some of these – but let me briefly mention four others: First, the Labor Party. God knows why, but Baz had an unswerving loyalty that even extended to Mark Latham of all people. The rest of us, like all sensible people, couldn’t give a rats about politicians, and one of our favourite sports was to bait him on the subject. Boy, did he gobble up the bait.

Secondly, the Bears. Unfortunately for Barry he inherited at an early age, along with many others here today, the incurable and agonising disease of being a North Sydney Supporter. He fiercely maintained that support throughout his life as a long serving Director of the Football Club and most importantly in recent years as President of the Leagues Club.

Live It Love It February 2011 - April 2011

Barry Glasgow, President of the Football Club, has asked that I publicly record the deep thanks of the Board and all members of the Football Club for Barry’s utter loyalty and invaluable support in good times and not so good times and their deep sorrow at his passing.

Thirdly, the Leagues Club and the wider Club movement. Barry just loved his job as a Director for more than 20 years and, for the last 10 years, as President of the Club. As Diana puts it – “he lived for the Club” and she will never forget the night he rang her to say “Diana – stand up – you are now speaking with the President”.

From personal experience, as a member of the Board throughout Barry’s presidency, I can tell you he was a great President – very possibly the greatest.

I sincerely hope that the Club finds a way to honour his contribution in perpetuity as one of its greatest sons. How fortunate that he was unanimously elected as a life member earlier this year.

At this point, I must thank the Club, and particularly CEO Hans Sarlemyn, on behalf of the family for the assistance given since Barry’s death. You are all invited back to the Club this afternoon to sip a cool drink and reminisce about a great bloke.

Fourthly – and most importantly – the family. Barry was unquestionably a loyal and devoted husband to Pearl and Diana has already told you, in her own words, just how great a Dad he was.

Unlike women, it is not common for men to spend endless hours discussing their children, but Barry spoke many times about how proud he was – and it was unmistakeable – of Diana’s many successes, of the times he would take his grandson Philip to the show and how thrilled he was at the recent arrival of granddaughter Jasmine and the Darwin trio of Naomi, Cassandra and Anthony.

Today is doubly sad because those who really know him agree that, at 70, his life was in perfect harmony. His family, his great partner Judy, his mates, the Club – he had it all before him.

So Barry – it’s time to say, not goodbye, but au revoir – ‘til we meet again.

But until we do, you’ve left us all with many great memories:

• those arguments in the Boardroom and around the table in the Club – often fierce but never vicious;

• those days of endless agony following the Bears through thin and thin and then watching them snatch yet another defeat from the jaws of victory;

• those days in Phillip Island at Arthur’s pub where things happened that must never be repeated anywhere on the mainland and certainly not in this place of reverence;

• the trips we had together to the US and particularly his favourite haunt, Las Vegas.

• above all your friendship. There are many here today, from Diana down, who acknowledge you as their best mate. We can pay you no higher tribute but we can thank you, with all the sincerity we can muster, for making our lives much the better with your friendship.

If I may mention just one incident which confirms the greatness of the man, whilst in New York we decided to catch a train to Washington. Bob Dawson and I went to Penn Station to book tickets for the three of us and Luke Simmons, the Club COO. I gave the ticket clerk our names and when he asked us to check the entry on the computer screen there it was – Baron Alliston. So even the humble ticket officer in Lower Manhattan instantly recognised nobility and majesty of the man. The rest of us are, and remain, his humble and obedient servants.

As I said, Bazza, you’ve left with us many memories. But as we leave here today, I want you to remember just two things –

• there’ll always be a place for you round the table at the Leagues Club; and

• there’ll always be a very, very special place for you in each of our hearts.

God bless you Barry. Rest in Peace.

INTRODUCING MARK HOLMAN

As you all no doubt know, the NSW Parliament will not sit again until after the next State election on March 26th, And while the early proroguing of Parliament by Premier Kristina Keneally has thrown into doubt the workings of a committee looking into the the sale of electricity, the other annoying consequence is that none of the questions we have asked the government will now be answered. Both of us are responsible for portfolios that are very much in the public mind – transport and health – and there was much information sought through these questions that will now not be forthcoming. In the case of health for example, there were over 100 answers awaited, among them information that is important in the context of the campaign to increase the nurse to patient ratio to one in four. While we have made it clear that the NSW Liberals & Nationals will be increasing nurse numbers, it is hard to

be specific about the one in four ratio when we don’t know what the current ratios are, how many extra nurses would be required and what the cost would be.But despite no longer attending Parliamentary sittings, both of us are busier than ever developing health and transport policies and plans, speaking to many people working in those areas or affected by them, and of course holding the government to account. We also travel a great deal around the state talking to people where they live about issues affecting them in their daily lives and coming up with solutions that will address their problems – whether it involves more trains and buses to cut journey times or more nurses and hospital beds to cut waiting times. If any of you want to know more details about these policies and plans you can find them at www.startthechange.com.au.

This heavy schedule means we must be extremely vigilant about leaving enough time to ensure our own constituents and the many organisations in our own electorates have their share of our attention. And this is where we would like to extend our thanks for the valuable support and friendship offered to us both by North Sydney Leagues Club – by members, directors and staff. We are both very sad about the death of our dear friend Barry Alliston. We had lunch with Barry and Hans only a couple of weeks earlier at Parliament House and saw him only days before he died. Both Barry and Hans have been terrific in working with us on the memorandum of support for the club movement that has been signed by the NSW Liberals & Nationals. We extend our deepest sympathy to Barry’s immediate family and friends and all at the extended North Sydney Leagues family who will miss him sorely. We offer you all our ongoing gratitude and support.

norths Group’s new President, Mark Holman, has been a self employed chartered accountant for thirty years and holds degrees in Law and Commerce from the University of New South Wales. Prior to setting up his own practice he worked with such firms as KPMG and Ernst & Young.

February 2011 - April 2011 Live It Love It

A NSW Liberals & Nationals Government will secure the Mount Penang site on the Central Coast for the establishment of a Central Coast Bears headquarters, NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell and the Liberal Central Coast team announced on January 11.

Under the proposal, the site owned by the NSW Government, would be reserved as a special sporting precinct to be developed with administrative and training facilities when the Central Coast Bears consortium is successful in securing an NRL franchise license for 2013.

Mr O’Farrell met with Bears representatives including CEO Greg Florimo, Head of Football Operations David Fairleigh and Director Ken Sayer, who is also CEO of the Bear’s major sponsor Mortgage House, at the site along with Liberal Candidate for Gosford Chris Holstein, Liberal Candidate for The Entrance Chris Spence, Liberal Candidate for Wyong Darren Webber, and Liberal Member for Terrigal Chris Hartcher.

Mr O’Farrell said the proposal will allow the Bears to approach the NRL with a comprehensive plan for a new Rugby League team for the Central Coast.

“The Central Coast loves its sport and the group behind the Central Coast Bears bid has been working hard to develop a strong supporter base on the Central Coast,” Mr O’Farrell said.

“The State Government has a role to play in that process and a NSW Liberals & Nationals Government will work with the Central Coast community and the Bears to push for a local NRL team,” he said.

“This proposal ensures that the Central Coast Bears consortium will be able to present the NRL with a strategic plan in March 2011 that includes provisions for training and administrative facilities.

“The Bears will be subject to the same commercial lease conditions as others at the Mount Penang site but this proposal gives the consortium an option over

that lease while they prepare their submission to the NRL.

“If the bid proposal is successful then the land will be immediately available for the construction of new facilities.

“The local Liberal Central Coast team have made it clear to me how important a rugby league team would be here and I’m prepared to do everything I can to back it in.”

Greg Florimo welcomed the announcement and said he was looking forward to working with the next NSW Government to establish the NRL’s newest team on the Central Coast.

“This announcement from Barry O’Farrell and the NSW Liberals is a great step forward and will allow us to bring together a great package to present to the NRL,” Mr Florimo said.

“The Central Coast and North Shore communities have backed us all the way and we’re excited about establishing a new team here,” he said.

“This is a unique location which is already supported by some great businesses, community organisations and events.

“Hundreds of thousands of spectators have visited Blue Tongue Stadium to attend Rugby League events during the past 10 years and a local NRL team is expected to significantly increase the economic benefit brought to the Coast by major sporting events,”said Central Coast Bears spokesperson, Mr Florimo.

“We’re looking forward to adding to that community by establishing new state-of-the-art facilities here at Mount Penang.”

The Central Coast Bears’ compelling march to the NRL achieved yet another milestone when it signed its 5,000th member in early January.Greg Florimo, CEO of the Central Coast Bears, stated, “Our objective was 5,000 members by 31 March, 2011, which is the date we will present our bid document to the NRL for inclusion in the competition in 2013.“We have easily achieved this goal, which underlines the groundswell of support for an NRL team based on the Central Coast.“I would also like to urge every one of our 5,000 plus members to try and encourage family members, work colleagues and friends to sign up.

“One more member each, and we could potentially crack 10,000 members, which sends a very strong message to the Rugby League community that the Central Coast is serious about supporting a team in the game’s elite competition.”Central Coast Bears 5000th member Daniel Langbridge, is a local junior from Wyong. Central Coast Bears Head of Football Operations David Fairleigh, said, “We are fortunate to have a total of 23 junior clubs in our catchment between Lake Munmorah and Kirribilli.“This equates to over 7,000 junior players, the third largest junior base in the state.’

DON’T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE THIS YEAR!Two of the top ten New Year’s Resolutions are getting fit and losing weight. Most people make these resolutions year after year and never fulfil either one.

Want to make 2011 the year that you make good your resolution to become healthier? Let norths Fitness show you how to finally win the battle of the bulge and regain your lost health!

The key is to educate yourself on how your body works. Statistics show that Australians are gaining more weight every year and are less active. Dieting, quick fixes, and magic pills don’t work.

At norths Fitness we educate our members on how to make lifestyle changes that will help improve overall health. Whether it’s weight loss, fighting diabetes or lowering one’s cholesterol our Exercise Specialists can help you regain and maintain your health.

ELIMINATE SUGARSRefined White Sugar, Soda’s, Candy, sugar loaded products such as cakes, cereals and snack foods. Refined sugar quickly raises blood sugar and causing undue stress on the pancreas and makes glucose management almost impossible. The body can’t completely utilize the refined sugar so your body will store it as “FAT”!

ELIMINATE CAFFEINE PRODUCTS

Coffee, Tea and Sodas. Caffeine accelerates the aging process by impairing immunity, which occurs through the elevation of stress hormones, and nutrition depletion. Caffeine raises blood sugar levels and disrupts the sugar-regulating effect on insulin. It also raises fatty acid levels in the blood and homocysteine levels, which greatly increases the diabetic’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Caffeine is known to cause vascular resistance (circulation is reduced) and raises stress hormone levels, which is a primary risk factor for diabetes. So get rid of caffeine if you are serious about preserving your youth and having long-term good health.

EAT MORE FRUIT & VEGETABLES

Vegetables and fruit are arguably the most important source of nutrition in the human diet. One of the most consistent findings in dietary research is that those who consume higher amounts of vegetables and fruit have lower rates of heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic disease.

EXERCISE, IT’S IMPORTANT!

The World Heart Organisation said physical inactivity doubles the chances of developing heart disease and increases the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. Doctors estimate that between 65% and 85% of the world’s population fail to take enough exercise. Two out of three children around the globe take too little exercise to improve their health. Even moderate exercise such as a brisk walk for 30 minutes most days helps control weight, cuts stress, anxiety and depression. The key is doing something!

Start walking today.

HAVE FUN AND GET INVOLVED

JUNIOR BEAR BUSINESSJunior rugby league provides 1,000’s of people the opportunity to enjoy themselves throughout the winter.

Players of all ages are catered for with U6 to U15’s playing on a Saturday and U16 to A Grade (open) age playing on Sundays. All Saturday football is covered by the ARL Safeplay code that provides changes in the rules to eliminate dangerous or rough play. Qualified referees, coaches and trainers are in charge of all games and teams.

Fun, enjoyment and skill acquisition are the major focus. Modified rules also ensure that learning to play the game are the main objectives for U6 to U12’s. The cost to play is the cheapest in town with clubs charging a nominal amount to register with full uniform provided. Clubs provide a great social atmosphere and insurance is also covered by your rego fee. It is guaranteed that all players are well looked after by the clubs.

Sunday football is more competitive and provides top class games on a regular basis. With three levels of A (open) age football all standards are catered for. The top level of A grade has a lot of grade experienced players involved and is a great competition probably the equal of any in Sydney. All clubs need volunteers and club supporters are guaranteed to have a great day watching high quality games.

Remember IT’S NEVER TO LATE TO JOIN UP OR START SUPPORTING.

Competitions will commence on Saturday April 2nd and Sunday April 3rd.

The clubs that participate are Asquith playing at Storey Park, Berowra playing at Warrina St, Hills Hawks playing at Dural Park, North Sydney Brothers playing at Tunks Park, Pennant Hills/Cherrybrook playing at Greenway Park and Willoughby playing at Willoughby Park.

U/6 to U12 will play in competitions controlled by the North Sydney Junior League.

U13 to A Grade play in joint competitions with the Manly Junior League. These competitions provide greater variety and a more equitable competition for all grades whilst giving the teams in U13 to U16 the opportunity to play in their own districts for semi finals.

field event. Cris Penn won gold in 800m and silver in the 1500m track events along with Derek Burke collecting bronze in the 1500m race. Kathy Penn won bronze in the 8km cross country and Alison Carlin earned silver in the 8km cross country team race and bronze in the half marathon.

There was warm camaraderie experienced amongst all competitors. The Tahitians played their drums during the events, motivating and distracting the competitors from the draining heat. The local children, who were involved in the marshalling, would yell “Allez, Allez, Aussie!” as our competitors ran pass.

Finally, vale to Mr. Barry Alliston, who was a life time friend, fellow director for 24 years and Club President for the last 10 years. He will be sorely missed.

By February, all New Year resolutions should be broken by this stage, except for one - yes that’s the one, joining our intra-club activities! Whether you are very physically active or like to take it slow, there will be a Club open to you, with all Clubs looking for more members now. The Sports Council will resume later this month, so news updates on activities will not be available in this issue.

Those activities that were suspended over the Christmas and New Year break have resumed. I am aware that the Cricket Club are very happy with their A Grade leading their competition by two points at this stage and the A Reserves in third spot.

The 2011 Australian Open Chess Championships hosted by N.S.L.C was again an outstanding competition. See details in the news section of the magazine.

I am happy to report that four members of the Bears Jogging Club competed for Australia at the 2010 Oceania Masters Athletic Championships in Tahiti, this being purely a track and
