Assam is a state blessed with a vast wealth of natural wonders. It has many national parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries.

Page 7: Northeast India

KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK – Assam’s MUST-DO ATTRACTION! (250 kms from Guwahati airport / approx 5 ½ hrs drive). The Park is world famous for the fact that inhabits two-third of the world’s One-horned Rhino population (over 1800 rhinoceros). Kaziranga has also largest density of tigers in a protected area in the whole area. But one has to be very very lucky to spot Tiger because of thick vegetation in the grassland called elephant grass (up to 6 metres high).

Page 8: Northeast India

One must be very very unlucky not to spot rhinoceros in Kaziranga.

Page 9: Northeast India

But Kaziranga is not all about rhinos. The park also has elephants, wild buffalo (Over 70% of the world population), swamp deer, hog deer, barking deer, over 450 species of woodland and grassland birds of which 18 species are globally threatened. The park divided into central, eastern and western sectors consists of semi- evergreen forested highlands, rivulets, marshes and extensive plains covered with tall elephant grasses.

Manas, at the base of foot hills of the Bhutan-Himalayas in the state of Assam, with unique biodiversity and landscape. Sighting of animals in Manas is not so good as in Kaziranga but the diversity of the habitat is very high. The park got its name from Manas River that flows right though the park which itself is named after God Manasa. Manas is probably a site of what the earth looked like before the arrival of man.

Cherrapunjee

Cherrapunji-,The original name for this town was Sohra and renamed as Sohra sits on the southern tip of a plateau that looms over Bangladesh. The cliffs of Cherrapunji are the first place hit by moisture that forms over the Bay of Bengal. All the rain lands on arid, deforested, ground. As there is no reservoir to store the rain water, it rapidly runs down the hill towards the plains of Bangladesh, therefore Cherrapunji faces acute water shortage and the inhabitants often have to trek for miles to obtain potable water
