Hello and Welcome to the fourth edition of the North Notts Drinker.

Firstly an apology to Simone and the staff at the Angel Inn at Misson. Due to an editorial oversight the article covering the Angel receiving last seasons Autumn Pub of the Season was omitted from the last edition of the NND.

Another apology for the late publication of this edition of the magazine, this has been due in part but not entirely to the scarcity of articles received. The more copy you send in the better the magazine will become! From the outset I stated to the committee that the magazine relies on the branch members for supplying it with content. Thank you to all that have done so before, keep it coming in!

Congratulations to the Queens at East Markham for winning Pub of the Year. The Grafton for winning Pub of the Season and special congratulations to the Misterton Sports and Social Club for winning the very fi rst Club of the Year Award.

Everards pub, The Queens Hotel, East Markham has been awarded the title of North Nottinghamshire CAMRA Pub of the

Year for 2013. Licensees Chris Russon and Barbara Acres

were presented the award in March by CAMRA’s North Nottinghamshire branch Chairman, Steve Bownes. Steve Bownes said: “The merits for the award are excellent ale, good atmosphere, friendly staff and a nice decor. The Queens Hotel fully deserve this award due to the hard word work and friendliness of Barbara, Chris and all the staff. This is the second time in 7 years that the Queens Hotel has won

this prestigious award. The pub will now go into the regional fi nal competing against pubs from Mansfi eld, Newark, Nottingham and the Vale of Belvoir”.

Chris was delighted at receiving the award and said: “We are proud to have received this prestigious award for a second time to add to our Pub of the Season and our special award from CAMRA for the many consecutive years we have spent in their Good Beer Guide. We would like to thank our staff and all our customers for making this possible. We shall continue to strive to be in contention for more awards in the years to come. We should also like to thank Steve and all the CAMRA members for their support”.

With the achievement, the Queens Hotel also becomes the fi rst pub to have won the North Nottinghamshire CAMRA Pub of the Year award more than once. The Queens Hotel is a traditional, family friendly village pub and is renowned for its eclectic food and desserts menu.

See for yourself why the Queens Hotel has won such a great award; the pub can be found in the country village of East Markham.

CAMRA celebrates international brewing with the publication of two books all about beers from beyond our shores.

Good Beer Guide Belgium (7th Edition)

Is a comprehensive guide book for any visitor to the original home of craft beer. Now in its 7th edition, the book has been exhaustively updated by Tim Webb (co-author World Atlas of Beer & The Pocket Beer Book) and Joe Stange (co-author Around Brussels in 80 Beers) to refl ect

the growth in the Belgian beer market that has taken place in the fi ve years since the previous editions publication. Author, Tim Webb, sees Belgian infl uence reaching far beyond just visitors to that country, he said:

“With an increasing audience for handcrafted, de-industrialised and non-corporate beers, Belgian brewing’s distinctive blend of tradition, invention and quality will continue to fuel a growing demand for complex and interesting beers far beyond its borders. This book gives people all the advice they need to get out there and explore what’s on offer. There’s a great chance and challenge for brewers everywhere to get inspired and get creative as a result.”

Split into two distinct sections, the book fi rst takes an in-depth look at over 900 beers

produced by the country’s diverse array of brewers – from global giants to equipment sharing proto-brewers. Each brewer is presented with full contact details and given a rating out of 5 for quality, while each beer is also given a star rating out of 5.

Then, having acquainted the reader with what to drink, the guide turns to the tricky question of where to drink it.

Over 500 bars, cafés, bistros and beer shops are hand-picked by Tim and Joe from the ultra modern to the incomparably traditional. Organised into regional listings, each bar entry includes full address information, details of size & range of the venues beer list and key dos and don’ts for visitors.

The Beer Select-O-Pedia

Written by Michael Larson, co-founder of beer review website The Perfectly Happy Man (www.theperfectlyhappyman.com), the book uses a ‘Periodic Table of Beer Styles’ to guide readers through the vibrant and diverse world beer scene – from English Golden Ale to German Doppelbock to the latest Hyper beers from North America and all points in-between. Roger Protz, Consultant Editor for the book said:

“This book is excellent for anyone interested in the vast, rich and fascinating world of beers

- not just the UK’s real ales but also those brewed around the globe. The best part is you can discover and enjoy at your own pace - no matter how much you already know about beer - whether you are dipping your toe in for the fi rst time or diving straight in at the deep end.”

All the styles are presented alongside full-colour illustrations with an ‘Atomic Structure’ diagram featuring key facts about a style’s ingredients,

famous producers, food matches and titbits of trivia. While a small selection of sample beers are supplied for each style to get the reader started the book encourages readers to search out, experience and enjoy these styles for themselves.

CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide Belgium (CAMRA Member Price £12.99) and Beer Select-O-Pedia (CAMRA Member Price £10.99) are both out now and are available from CAMRA at www.camra.org.uk/shop and in all other good bookshops.

Buying the books directly from CAMRA helps us campaign to support and protect real ale, real cider & real perry, and pubs & pub-goers.

This is the third Beermuda Festival, year one three pubs took part, last year 4 pubs , this year fi ve pubs.

On Saturday morning the 25th January 14 of us left the Mallard Worksop and headed via Mini Bus to East Markham to pick up Chris the Landlord from the Queens Hotel, next stop was Newark.

The Castle Barge was our fi rst port of call, 9 real ales, very impressive and well worth a visit a good start to our day in Newark.

Then onwards to the Castle 6 ales a good traditional pub, the beer was now beginning to fl ow.

The Fox and Crown with 16 beers available was our next stop and very worthwhile it was.

Then to the Prince Rupert a pub well liked by a lot of our members with 12 beers available to sample.

Next stop was Just Beer Micropub, unique, the drinks selection is in the name, a must for all real ale drinkers, 17 beers available, the beer

was fl owing the pub was packed and rightly so.

Then to meet the bus we headed back to and boarded the Castle Barge for a drink to help us on our way to the Queens at East M a r k h a m , where a break was w e l c o m e d

and we enjoyed chip butties kindly provided by Chris and Barbara.

A great day was had by all, we rekindled a number of relationships with our friends from Newark Branch and planned the forthcoming quiz night at the Mallard (see article later).

The branding on particular beers has a huge impact on who drinks it; I see this refl ected in my peers’ choice of ale. My local

brewery Robinsons based in Stockport has just produced bestselling ale ‘Trooper’ endorsed by Iron Maiden, one of my personal favourites. Elbow also brought out a brew ‘Build a Rocket Boys’ to appeal to the younger market. Real ale has increasingly become more fashionable with the help of some clever marketing and an increasing interest in drinking something often cheaper and more varied than other bigger brand alternatives. This switch in habits is evident all over Manchester, particularly in the Northern Quarter, where the age of drinkers has noticeably decreased to people under 30. The question is how do we recruit the new emerging group of youngsters?

There has never been a better time to increase young members within CAMRA. The target audience is already interested in real ale and in turn supporting their local pubs. In order to both engage and maintain members, recruitment needs to be strategically co-ordinated. Having attended a vast array of local beer festivals, recruitment needs to be targeted at the younger based festivals, for example at Didsbury where more students and young professionals reside and also at Chorlton, with a similar demographic. Potential members need to be educated about the importance of pubs and their reduction in binge drinking. It would be benefi cial to improve the discounts into beer festivals to increase membership. Alongside this, bringing a non-member for free admission to the festival can help to create further interest.

Once more young members have been recruited the dynamics of the CAMRA meetings

can gradually progress, with more meetings held at pubs with live music or a comedy venue. The use of twitter and facebook should also be increased to help young members become more active and to spread the hard work of CAMRA. Reminding people of celebrity involvement may help recruit more young members, for example Madonna’s favourite drink was once cited as ‘Timothy Taylor Landlord’. Maybe certain celebrities can be made honorary CAMRA members to develop the brand.

Prior to becoming a young member of CAMRA, I too wondered, why did I need to? Not only is it worth the fee for the Wetherspoons vouchers but more importantly we need to sustain the amazing work that CAMRA has already done and help to maintain pubs and develop the brand. Thus ensuring that pubs can thrive and provide live music, comedy nights and band themed pints created just for people like you

how & why CAMRA SHOULD ATTRACT YOUNG MEMBERSNEVER A BETTER TIME

Heather’s Bio:I am currently a member of the Young

Member Marketing group, helping to recruit and retain more young members, vital to CAMRAs survival. I have been a CAMRA member since 2010, after seeing the hard work of CAMRA and how active changes can be made. I also feel strongly about maintaining local pubs. One of my favourites being the community pub of the year, The New Oxford in Salford who do an excellent pint of Chocolate and Vanilla stout from Titanic brewery.

On Wednesday 19th February we hosted a quiz night with Newark Branch at the Mallard, Worksop, this was a return

match as Newark beat us at Skittles on their home ground.

A total of around 40 people attended, David Moore the Newark Chairman brought with him a party of 20.

The Quizmaster was our Chairman Steve Bownes, the evening was well organised mainly by the Newark Social Secretary Tracey Moran. A total of 14 teams took part 7 from each branch.

The beer fl owed, the questions, 50 in all were varied from diffi cult to not so diffi cult, but something to suit everyone.

The banter was good, the beer was good, there was a good selection of raffl e prizes with some excellent Shed Brewery ales from Colin Tweed and lots of prizes from Wayne and Mel of the Mallard.

Around 10pm the quiz fi nished and the quiz sheets were carefully checked by Tracey Moran and Terry Johnson.

The results Newark’s total 219, North Notts 189, Newark beat us again.

Of the individual teams Newark’s Three Just Men and a Lady scored 43, North Notts, Skinny Dog Team scored 38 and Fuzzy and Kev scored 34.

We all had a few more beers and Chip Butties were enjoyed by all.

We are looking forward to a return match in Newark during the Summer months, Newark Branch will pick the game(s), this will be third time lucky for North Notts as we will win, Newark beware.

Thanks to Wayne and Mel for use of the facilities at the Mallard.

A great day was had by all, we rekindled a number of relationships with our friends from Newark Branch and planned the forthcoming quiz night at the Mallard.

CAMRA have launched an online petition calling on the Government to introduce a Pubs Watchdog immediately to protect

pubs from closure due to unfair practices in the tied pub sector. In the fi rst two hours, the petition secured over 5,000 signatures and the total had reached 15,000 after 24 hours.

The petition came ahead of a Parliamentary Debate where Shadow Business Minister Toby Perkins MP urged the Government to stop dragging its feet and introduce legislation critical to the longevity of the pub industry. The eight-week consultation into reform of the large pub companies launched last year, which

promised to introduce a Statutory Code and Adjudicator. But despite over 96% of people responding to the consultation and supporting the need for regulation, the Government are still delaying their plans.

CAMRA is now sending out a clear message to the Government that enough is enough. With twenty six pubs pulling their last pint every week, a Pubs Watchdog is urgently needed to ensure pubs and landlords are protected. The support the petition has acquired so far is vital evidence to the Government that reform is desperately needed and is supported by the general public.

CAMRA’s Chief Executive Mike Benner said: “Pubs are closing as a result of big pub companies squeezing the profi ts of publicans with costly rents and high beer prices. Our petition is the latest demonstration of public dissatisfaction at the way far too many publicans are treated by the big pub companies.”

Please continue to support our pubs and sign the online petition to prove to the Government that this is an issue that cannot be sidelined by visiting www.pubscandal.org.uk

CAMRA raises a glass to George Osborne as beer duty cut for second year running CAMRA branches across the country

celebrated last week as Chancellor George Osborne announced a cut in beer duty for the second year running.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of over 6,500 CAMRA members who lobbied their MP ahead of the Budget, consumers have yet again raised a glass to the Chancellor to toast another Budget for British beer drinkers.

Beer supports nearing 1 million jobs and contributes £22 billion to the UK economy, and another cut in beer duty in 2014 will help maintain a healthier pubs sector.

Members of Kernow CAMRA [picture attached] raised a glass to the campaign’s success in Beerwolf Books pub in Falmouth.

Licensee Dom Smith [pictured centre left] says he is delighted with the Budget outcome, stating that: “A penny doesn’t seem like much but it will defi nitely make a difference”.

Kernow CAMRA branch Chairman, Norman Garlick, added that: “This Budget success is a real testament to the weight that CAMRA members and supporters are able to bring to the battle for a fairer deal for pubs and ale drinkers”.

This is an incredible success thanks to another year of fantastic campaigning by CAMRA members on this issue. CAMRA would like to thank local branches for their fantastic campaigning efforts in shifting over 500,000 Budget 2013 success beer mats and posters, and the many thousands of CAMRA members who lobbied their MP and secured the support of 119 MPs.

CAMRA’s Chief Executive Mike Benner commented: “CAMRA is delighted to see the Chancellor implementing an unprecedented second consecutive cut of a penny in beer duty. This is not only about keeping the price of a pint affordable in British pubs but helping an industry which has been in overall decline continue on its long road to recovery.

“CAMRA cares greatly about the future of the Great British pub and it is clear from this Budget announcement that the Government do

too.“Keeping the price of a pint affordable is

vital for the long-term health of the pub sector and CAMRA would hope this latest vote of confi dence in British pubs will go some way to slowing the rate of closures, by encouraging more people to make use of their local this summer”.
