A Swords man, whobravely took the decisionto run in the recentDublin City Marathon in memory ofhis late son, has succeeded inraising vital funds for awareness ofthe very rare disease, which killedhis son. An emotional David Woods, fromDrynam Court, who is a schoolteacher, had never run a marathonbefore, but he vowed to run in themarathon after his son, Paul Woods(22) died from HHT (HereditaryHaemorrhagic Telangiectasia), avery rare hereditary disease, in Juneof last year. Paul was a very fityoung man and participated in lastyear’s marathon. David and his wife,Dara set up the charity, HHT Irelandin order to raise awareness of thishereditary disease, for which thereis no cure.

Speaking exclusively tothe County Leader ,Paul’s mother, Dara

explained that so few people knowabout the disease, and that theymay have it without knowing it. As itis a degenerative disease, the condi-tion worsen as you get older. “Oneof the classic symptoms is unex-plained, constant nose bleeds, witha pattern in the family tree. My sideof the family is affected, as is ourdaughter, Katie (21), who is beingmonitored at the HHT Centre ofExcellence in Cork. The conditionmanifests itself through bleeding inthe brain or lungs. Paul’s conditionaffected his lungs,” she said.Dara said that HHT didn’t hold Paulback whenever he was embollished,a procedure that closes off the bloodvessel malfunction. When this proce-dure took place, he had great

energy,” she said. Paul andhis girlfriend decided to go toParis in June 2012 to celebratehis graduation, but he sadlysuccumbed to his illness anddied there. Paul was a veryhealthy young man, who wasinto his music and enjoyed lifeto the fullest. Well knownSwords band, Kodaline werespecial friends of Paul’s andthey paid an emotional tributeto him at his funeral.David and Dara then decidedto commemorate Paul’s life,by setting up HHT Ireland.David said, “I promised myselfthat when Paul died, I would run inthe marathon in his memory, tocollect funds for the charity. Iprepared well for the event, andspent the last year training. I ranwith Paul’s friend, Craig Hegartyfrom Broadmeadows, who was agreat support for me.” When asked if the emotion of theoccasion was likely to get the betterof him, a determined David said, “Iwas so focused that I just kept goingon. I got great support from neigh-bours, colleagues and family, who

lined the route and shouted encour-agement. Running with Paul’s friendCraig was a great support for me.This was my first marathon, but Iwould do it again for the charity. Thefact that we managed to raise a veryimpressive €5,000 will be a greathelp to the almost 900 people whoare affected by disease in thiscountry. We will be holdingfundraising functions in the newyear, in the hope of raising aware-ness of the condition,” he said.The Grace Nolan Foundation was set

up in 2000, in memory of nine yearold Grace Nolan from Cork, who wasone of the first people in this countryto be diagnosed with HHT. From this,the centre of excellence was estab-lished and it proved very helpful forPaul. Katie is currently being moni-tored there. Dara explained that thedecision to establish a sister charity,HHT Ireland was to create awarenessof the condition locally and the hope is that funds can be madeavailable through a number ofevents next year.

Following on from our storyin past editions of theCounty Leader, concerningthe most serious case ofradioactive theft in thehistory of this country, itseems we are no closer to aresolution of the mystery.The seven radioactive light-ning rods, that were stolenfrom Rainey’s Steeplejacksin Swords recently, are stillmissing and local gardaihave no update on thestatus of the situation,though they say they arefollowing a few leads.

Balbriggan Kids Vote Yes In ReferendumThe pupils in BalbrigganEducate Together, as partof their 9th AnnualHuman RightsMonth, were invited to

vote in their Referendum‘Are our Children’s Rightsrespected in theBalbriggan?’ with 60 percent voting ‘yes.’For the month precedingthe votes, the childrenundertook lessons andresearch on the subject ofchildren’s rights, andhuge amount of debateand discussion ensued.Following this, all 400children voted in a pollingstation designed andmanned by the school’sStudent Council. With 60per cent of the pupilsvoting ‘yes’ against 40 percent voting ‘no,’ the vastmajority felt their rightsas children wererespected in Balbriggan. Those who voted ‘yes’ feltthat Balbriggan had lotsof facilities for children,such as the Library, thenew Community Centre,Ardgillan Park, an excel-

lent shopping centre, agood variety of buses andtrains, and plenty ofsports and extra circularactivities around thetown. Highest among thereasons why people voted‘no’ was the issue ofsafety. Recounting talesof verbal and physicalassault, particularly byteenage children in thetown, many childrenexpressed the opinionthat they did not feel safewalking aroundBalbriggan. Some alsofelt that they were neverconsulted on issues thatmatter to them inBalbriggan. The membersof the student council willnow meet with importantfigures in the Balbriggancommunity to discuss theissues that have arisenover the period of thereferendum.

Ingenious ‘SandDam’ Project ForRotary IrelandRotary clubs from all around Irelandand beyond got together to build a‘Sand Dam.’This is part of an initiative byRotary Clubs to bring waterto half a million people inKenya over the next twoyears.“The Sand Dam conceptis thousands of yearsold and a simple lowcost way to bring waterto millions of people.Water is the catalyst foreverything. Water helps to growcrops which can be sold for money thatcan be used for education. Water isthe first step to poverty relief,” saidMatt Porter, International ChairpersonRotary Ireland. “These Sand Dams arereinforced concrete walls built across

seasonally dry rivers. Walls trap thesand that the rains wash down river,”he continued. “The sand backs upagainst the wall and millions of litresof water are trapped in the sand. Thesand prevents the water from evapo-rating and filers the water so that it canbe drunk straight out of the sand bydigging a shallow hole.”

Rotary will only fund a dam if thelocal community get behind

the project. The wholecommunity must providethe labour free ofcharge as their commit-ment to the dam.Rotary then partners

with two agencies:Excellent from the UK and

ASDF from Kenya toprovide all the materials, the

design engineering and the buildingspecialists, but the community involve-ment is the key to the long termsustainability of the project. Dams take29 days to build, and truly do changelives forever.

John Crothers had his 60th Birthday Party, in the Pound bar in Swords recently and heasked all his family and friends instead of buying him presents for his birthday, he wouldhave two donation boxes, for charities on the night of his party if they would like todonate money. One charity was laura Lynn Children's Hospice and the other charity wasMultiple Sclerosis Society. A total of €1005 was raised for charity . A heart warming gesturefrom a Swords man hasresulted in over €1,000being raised for two charities. Localresident, John Crothers recently retiredfrom the County Council, and had his60th birthday party in the Pound Bar inSwords. Instead of accepting any giftsfor his momentous occasion, he askedall his family and friends to donatesome money to two charities, namelyThe Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice andthe Multiple Sclerosis Society. Thenight was a wonderful success, and hisgenerous decision resulted in a totalof €1005 being raised for the charities.

John spoke to the CountyLeader about why hedecided to do this. “My

daughter and I sat down together toplan the party, and I just realised thatat my age, I would probably get a lot ofvouchers, which would end up in adrawer and forget about them.”“So between myself and my daughter,we decided to ask guests to makedonations to the Laura Lynn Children’sHospice, a charity which my daughterthought was excellent, and, as I knewsomebody with MS, we decided thatwas the other one to go with,” heexplained. This idea went down a

treat with the 74 guests who attendedthe birthday bash and resulted in theamazing amounts of funds beingraised. People even called to thehouse to make donations. “I’d like tothank all who contributed to thesegreat causes, especially as we are intimes of austerity and property tax,”John concluded.

Local Girl Guides VisitGlendaloughLocal Guides, Brownies and Ladybirds fromaround the North County were among 900members of the Irish Girl Guides (IGG) whobraved the elements recently to enjoy the greatoutdoors at Glendalough.The girls from Portmarnock, Swords andDonabate joined other Girl Guides fromthroughout the Eastern Region, along with theirleaders, to take part in a Branching Out Day.The older Girl Guides donned their walkingboots to undertake a 12km hike around the twolakes, climbing up the Spinc to enjoy the stun-ning views and then returning via the PoulanassWaterfall. The Brownies undertook an Owl/Treeroute, while the Ladybirds followed a TeddyBear trail. Many of the girls also visited theReefert Church, round tower, sensory gardenand information centre.Anne McPartland, IGG Regional Commissionerfor the Eastern Region, said the aim of the eventwas to encourage the girls to get out of doorsand to appreciate nature. “Many kids these daysspend lot of time glued to a screen – computer,TV or mobile phone. This event, like all our

Guiding activities, was designed to encouragegirls develop an appreciation of the greatoutdoors, as well as to increase their confidencewhile building friendships,” she said.“We aim to help girls grow into young womenwho can make healthy and informed decisionsabout their own lives and take leadership intheir local communities.”

Swords StudentsGenerously Give ToCharityEvery year, St. Finian’s Community College inSwords raises money for various charities. MissMorris and the sixth year students organisedcharity bingo for first years in order to raisemoney for Trócaire. Also, Miss McKittrick andthe third year class organised a cake sale forthe DSPCA. Finally, on 17th of October, Miss O’Dwyer andthe sixth year L.C.A students organised a non-stop static bicycle ride from 9am until 5 pm forthe ‘Make A Wish Foundation’ in aid of childrenwho are terminally ill. This took place in thePavilions Shopping Centre and the shopperswere very generous with their donations. They

raised a whopping €1,474. The was a greatsuccess for all who participated and happilypresented the funds to their selected charities.The school is sure to be very busy for thecoming weeks ahead, as the staff and studentshave more charity work planned for the monthsup to Christmas.

Butchers at JCs Supermarket in Swords came up with an idea to raise funds for the MakeA Wish Foundation and they decided to produce a calendar called 'Butchers In The Buff',where they reveal a little more of themselves than customers see on a daily basis. Thecalendars went on sale in the supermaket on Friday, 1st November last and cost only €5,with all proceeds going to the Make A Wish Foundation. Exciting New Sports Facility In LuskIt was a very excitingnight in Lusk onSaturday last, with theofficial opening ofLusk United’s newclubhouse and floodlitpitch. It was openedby John Delaney (CEOFootball Association ofIreland), followed by amatch between LuskUnited Select Team

and Ireland’s Over40’s team on the newpitch and the club-house being openedto all from 8.30pm. This brand new facilityboasts a top classclubhouse, with a baras well as an impres-sive grass floodlit

pitch. Further futuredevelopments includean all-weather floodlittraining pitch for theclub’s ever-increasingnumbers. Lusk United ChairmanJohn Connell, wasnaturally thrilled withthis new development,and told the CountyLeader, “This is a new

beginning for the club.These facil it ies,coupled with the planto develop an all-weather pitch willenable us to increasethe number of youngpeople we can caterfor in the communityand provide a platformfor the club to increase its contribution to thebetterment of Luskthrough community

programmes, such asthe FAI’s Late NightSoccer Programme forteenagers. I believethis will be a pivotalmoment in our club’shistory.”The club now hasapproximately 320players across 18different teams, akids’ academy and agirls only programme.It is also activelyinvolved in coaching inprimary schools in andaround Lusk, as wellas recently partneringwith the new LuskCommunity CollegeSoccer team to assistthem with somecoaching expertise.

A High KickingSuccess

For this week’s County Living column, we sitdown to chat with Stephanie O’Connell, one ofthe instructor’s at the Kenpo Karate Club inPortmarnock. It’s fairly safe to say that karatehas been a staple in Stephanie’s life, and onethat she can’t imagine being without, as shehas literally grown up with the club, which wasfounded by her father in the early eighties. Locals will surely be familiar with the veryactive club, which has been in Portmarnock forover 30 years. “We celebrated our 30thanniversary last year, which was a great mile-stone to reach,” she explained. “The club wasinitially set up by my father in 1982, and after afew years, I eventually took it over.” As well asbeing an instructor, Stephanie trained in Kenpokarate and competed in various competitions,both nationally and internationally, for yearsbefore taking up teaching. “Even though it’s mystudents that compete nowadays, I’m alwaystraining and continuing to upskill, and that’sthe thing about karate, both as a competitiveart form and as a sport - you never stoplearning new skills.” Very impressively, theMalahide lady is about to receive her 3rd Dan(blackbelt), which is a fantastic achievement forherself and the club. The clubis a part of the Irish KenpoKarate Union (IKKU), and sheruns the club with threeother instructors: DavidDuffy, Ciaran McCormack andhis son, Donal. When I ask what spurred herinterest in karate growing up,she says she was alwaysencouraged by her father totake it up, but she soonrealised she didn’t need anypersuasion to continue it asshe got older. “I alwaysloved and enjoyed all aspects of it as the yearswent on, both as a self defence art form andthen training competitively. And during themany times I would compete, I got a chance totravel to places like Brazil, Austria and Russiawhich was great. I always tell people that I gotto see plenty of different sports halls aroundthe world,” she said, laughing. She explainedthat her transition to an instructor happened ata gradual pace. "I competed for so many yearsand then gradually, as other commitmentscame around and I decided to focus onstudying, the competing stopped and I decidedto focus on teaching the students, which is abig commitment in itself." For those that aren’t too familiar with KenpoKarate, it was started in the 1950’s by a mannamed Ed Parker, and the basis for it is selfdefence, but it has since developed into asports karate as well. “It’s mainly a selfdefence art form, and that’s why many take itup, but it has progressed as a sport. She says

that taking up karate, amongst other things is agreat way to boost a young child’s confidenceand seeing each student grow and progress astheir training goes on, is one of her favouriteaspects about being an instructor. "It'swonderful to see the kids grow in their confi-dence and skills and witness them reallyenjoying the karate. You couldn't ask for morethan that as an instructor, and it's one of thereal highlights for me when it comes to theclub."When I ask what might spur a young child towant to take up karate, she says that it offers achild a different skill set, as opposed to themore traditional activities, and explains thatone of the main reasons a lot of girls mightwant to learn, is for self defence, as karate is aself defence art. "What we set out to do isteach our students karate in a safe environ-ment, which enables them to be more self disci-plined and self confident. She says that karatehas many levels of difficulty that the kids canbuild up to as they want. "We have a schoolingsystem, which brings students along graduallyup through the different coloured ranks untilthey reach the Blackbelt standard, which is an

extremely high level ofachievement, but they don'tnecessarily have to compete;Some join for health andfitness purposes or to buildconfidence and so on, so it'sabout what suits you as theindividual.”“I think karate is great foreveryone to learn at somepoint in their lives as it's afantastic skill set to have," shecontinued. " We currently havearound 60 members (adultsand children) across varying

age groups and always encourage newmembers to come along to our trainingsessions, which take place on Friday eveningsfrom 6pm to 8pm, and Sunday mornings from10am to 12pm in Portmarnock Sport and LeisureCentre." Stephanie, her fellow instructors andher students are extremely dedicated to theirart form - they train five nights a week. "We'relucky that all our students are very driven anddedicated." As she works full time as well, shesays this leaves very little time for many otherhobbies though she mentions that she is amassive Dubs supporter. "I've been a seasonticketholder for the past few years, so I followthem around the county. I was thrilled to be inCroke Park to see them win the Sam Maguirelast September." It's evidently clear thatStephanie is extremely dedicated to the group.It is very time consuming, so you do have to bevery dedicated "But if I didn't love it, I wouldn'tbe doing it and it's as simple as that," sheconcluded.

In recent weeksthe French InteriorMinister has threatenedto withhold consent fromextending the SchenganTreaty’s provisions toinclude Romania andBulgaria. He cited hisconcern that, under the

treaty, crim-inal elementsfrom thesec o u n t r i e scould movefreely acrossEurope. Those promoting freemovement say that it willdeliver a wider pool oftalent and createemployment opportuni-ties. Those opposed saythat it will cause reducedwage levels and that thegeneral standard of livingwill fall. They also arguethat additional demandwill be placed on publicservices, infrastructureand the welfare systems

of some countries. I recall attending

Brussels afew yearsago. Eachcountry hadheld their

own conven-tion, with 100

randomly selectedcitizens attending anumber of NationalConventions at whichthey considered themost important thingswhich Europe shouldgive priority to. Thesenational groups thensend delegates toreport at this centralConvention to furtherfilter the list. Themessage which cameacross to me was howdisunited Europe wason the question ofimmigration. It seemedthe Mediterraneancountries understoodthat a major problemexisted. But as youmoved away from theMed, comprehensionreduced with somedelegates asking “whatit has got to do withus?”Will those elected nextyear to the EUParliament be politi-cians capable ofresponding to theseproblems? Can theygive leadership to theelectorate whilegaining a mandate todevelop an acceptableEU plan to deal withthese issues? Or will ofthose seeking electionuse these issues fortheir own ends, havinglittle or no regard forthe human sufferingthe current situationcreates? An expandingEU will place manydemands to find solu-tions on the new waveof MEPs. Those seekingleadership must tell theelectorate of theirplans. The electorateneed to be well briefedas they will have a lotto decide when theyvote next May for their representatives inthe EU.

A couple of editions ago I talkedabout what you might do if youare in an accident. This article isa step on from that. It is oftenthe case that people do getinjured in an accident. Theinjury might be patently obviousand the person is removed fromthe scene by way of an ambu-lance. Or, as is often the case,the accident victim may developan injury to the neck and backover a period of days.

The first thing to consider if youare injured in an accident is,whether or not the other party isat fault. It is only in the circum-stances wherein the third partyis at fault before you can pursuecompensation for injury. It maywell be obvious as to whichparty is at fault, or you mayrequire advice. My advice is thatyou attend your solicitor assoon as possible in circum-stances where fault might be anissue.

Your solicitor will soon tell youthat the law has changed in thelast decade as regards injurylaw. It used to be possible toissue legal proceedings in anyCourt, fairly quickly. The insur-ance companies lobbied succes-sive governments aggressivelybecause they quite rightlystated that the immediateissuance of legal proceedingswas adding an unnecessary andexpensive layer of legal costs,wherein liability or fault is notan issue. Therefore, thePersonal Injury AssessmentBoard (PIAB) was set up.

This essentially allows aninjured person to lodge theirclaim with the Injuries Boardthrough the completion of areasonably simple form and thelodgement of a medical report.The PIAB then send that formand report to the other party inthe accident, who then send onto their insurance company andthe insurance company eitherconsent to the PIAB dealing withit, or they reject the PIABdealing with it. The other partyor their insurers would clearlyonly reject the application ifthey considered they were notat fault, or only partly at fault forthe accident. In those circum-

stances, an authorisation wouldissue and legal proceedingswould have to issue on theexpiry of six months from thatauthorisation.

If the third party acceptsliability, then in those circum-stances the PIAB will proceed tomake an assessment. However,the assessment can take sometime. Currently the assessmentcan take up to one year at leastfrom the date of completion.

The system in fairness isdesigned to be as simplistic aspossible. However, there aremany pitfalls. Time limits can betight and you can easily becaught out by them. Insurancecompanies will contact youthrough the process. They willnot tell you, however insurancecompanies have a vestedinterest to minimise their expo-sure. They will try and settle thecase directly with you at anundervalue.

The assessment, when it even-tually comes through might notcompensate you properly inaccordance with the figure youare entitled to if the matterproceeded to Court. You areentitled to reject it and thenlegal proceedings issue.

Whilst the process is designedto be user friendly, a solicitor’sadvice could be vital to ensureyou are properly compensated.

I personally, through experi-ence, have a deep distrust ofinsurance companies. Theyroutinely exchange informationwhere they should not, contraryto the Data Protection Acts. Atno stage do they encourage youto secure legal advice becausethey know that through an expe-rienced solicitor, you have aconsiderably better chance ofsecuring complete and properredress.

My advice is that, even though asolicitor charges for thehandling of the PIAB process ascosts are not recoverable, youwould be wise to secure theadvices of a solicitor and ifappropriate, allow a solicitor tohandle the process for you.

Balbriggan Water IsOf Highest QualityThe County Council has said it consistently deliversdrinking water ‘of the highest quality’ to Balbriggan.The Council’s claim came in response to a queryabout the area’s water quality made by Balbriggantown councillor, Cllr Gráinne Maguire (NP). Maguireasked for a full report on the water service given tothe town, with particular attention to the area thateach reservoir serves and the quality of the water. Areport from the Council’s water services departmentexplained that the water in the area is monitoreddaily to ensure it meets strict regulations. “The

drinking water in the Balbrigganarea is produced in the FingalWater Treatment Plants at Leixlipand Bog of the Ring,” the localauthority said. “The water is tested and moni-tored daily in production to ensurethat it meets the strict require-ments of the Drinking WaterRegulations. In addition the waterservices department sample the

water at customers’ taps throughout the NorthCounty every day.” Maguire said that she was“happy enough” with the response and said that shehoped the water quality in the town continued to bemonitored on a regular basis.

Major Row Brewing InSwords EstateA massive row is brewing betweenresidents of Cherry Park in Swordsand property owners, KellandHomes, who own property to the rear of Cherry Park, wherea new development is underway.Resident Seamus Melinnclaims that “land, which isowned by Kelland Homeshas been lying fallow for thepast 31 years and I laid claimto it about 16 years ago. In2007, Kelland Homesattempted to get it back fromme. There were meetingsbetween my solicitors,myself and Kelland Homessolicitors, at which weagreed to move to a mutuallyagreed border, rather thanthe original border. Therewere three meetings plannedfor the architects of KellandHomes to come out and measure the new border,” he said. He claimed that they attended none of the three meetings. Inthe meantime, MKN Developments wanted to start building

on the land and I got another letter to say they wanted toimpose the original 2007 agreement. I’m not agreeable tothat. My dispute is with Kelland Homes, not MKN.” he said.He went on to say, ‘I received a letter saying that bulldozerswould arrive on Friday morning, 1st November to bulldozethe wall and the fence, but we had a protest of about 20people and the support I have from residents is tremen-dous. They are holding a round the clock vigil, to ensure thatbulldozing does not occur. We’re not going to move back,unless there’s a legal basis for us to surrender the land. I’m

prepared to stand in front ofthe bulldozer if necessary.This is the worst excesses ofthe Celtic Tiger, where devel-opers think they can literallybulldoze people out of theway.” Local political activist,Joe Newman was horrified bythe actions of the developer.He told the County Leader, “Ithink it’s a disgrace the waybuilders are allowed to justcome and develop at the backof people’s houses. There’slots of issues here which areaffecting quality of l ife ofthese residents. I’m calling on

the Council and the builder to engage with the residents ofCherry Park to resolve this problem as speedily as possible,to the satisfaction of the residents of Cherry Park,” he said.
