The study was presented at the International Early Psychosis Association Congress, and was taken from a large survey of > 4500 psychiatrists in 36 countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Results from the study include the startling finding that patients who are nonadherent to their medication are nearly five times as likely to relapse as patients who are fully adherent. The study’s authors comment that frequent relapses of schizophrenia, and subsequent hospitalisations, can lead to increased isolation for patients, and make it very difficult for them to find and keep a job. Such relapses can also result in an increased tendency for violent acts, including homicide and suicide, especially when substance abuse is also present, say the authors. Janssen.
