3. Student response

Big picture thinking is used in science to solve many problems and, in technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. The Australian Curriculum: Science, Year 6 Achievement Standard states:‘(students) describe and predict the effect of environmental changes on individual living things. Students explain how scientific knowledge helps us to solve problems and inform decisions and ‘Currently, there are a number of geographical locations experiencing major ‘bush fires’, and this has led to a lot of political commentary, and political and private action to solve the problem of how to extinguish the fires. The location that is receiving the most publicity is the Amazon, with the French Prime Minister stating the Amazon is the ‘lungs of the planet’.What does the term ‘lungs of the planet’ mean?Compare the following Science Alert articles as a provocation:

Students are to take on the role of science communicator to report to a worldwide audience on this topical problem currently effecting Planet Earth, ensuring they are accurately communicating the science concepts and related content.Students can present their ideas, findings and conclusions via a range of media for example: presentation, report, poster, multi-model text or recording.
