For Fishers mother, wife and “why aren’t there more hours in a day” career woman Paula Hastings, there was a brief oasis during one those hurry and hurry some more moments on a recent Thursday afternoon.

After leaving work at Community Health Network and scooting by St. Simon School on the northside of Indianapolis, Hastings and her 13-year-old son Nolan sped over to the Baseball Academy at the Strike Zone in Fishers. Following that 30 minute lesson in baseball, Nolan was expected at a late afternoon basketball practice on the other side of town.

Mom answered the challenge.

So why the hustle?

“[Nolan] just loves sports,” said Paula. “Sports are important for him, and his dad and I believe sports teaches him life skills.”

An important component of these learning skills is the involvement and input from former major league pitcher Wes Whisler, a Noblesville native who has discovered the second chapter of his professional career as the owner of the Baseball Academy at the Strike Zone (12550 Promise Creek).

“I was always trying to think what I would do after playing baseball,” said Whisler who was drafted by the Chicago White Sox (52nd overall pick) in the 2004 amateur draft and pitched before retiring in 2012. “This seemed to be the perfect answer for me.”

Whisler purchased the Baseball Academy in the autumn of 2014 and has watched the facility steadily grow in membership and private and team tutoring (over 100 students). The school offers five other instructors who have played either in college or professionally.

“We all teach the same philosophy,” said Whisler.

That philosophy holds up for those who aspire to continue their careers in college or professional baseball. It offers the same lessons on and off the field for those who are looking to improve their abilities for a junior or senior high school or a summer amateur league.

The latter is probably the case for Nolan, a lean athlete who was working on his catching skills during this private session with the affable Whisler. The catching drills move quickly and rapidly.

“Wes always makes him work harder,” assessed Paula. “He pushes them, but he also has a strong desire to make them better than

they are. Wes shows what they can gain by working hard.”

Hard work has been a staple for Whisler since his days in the Lawrence Township. He and his family moved to Noblesville while Wes was in the seventh grade.

As a multi-sport standout in baseball and basketball for the Millers, Whisler received numerous awards including being named Mr. Baseball after his senior season at Noblesville. After visiting top baseball colleges such as Louisiana State, South Carolina, Arkansas and UCLA, the 6-foot-5 Whisler chose the latter. By going to college, he shunned being drafted as an 18-year-older by the Chicago Cubs in the 41st round.

Three years later after serving as a starting pitcher and designated hitter for the Bruins, the White Sox chose Whisler in the second round of the 2014 draft.

“I loved playing baseball,” remembered Whisler.

His trail to the majors was filled with potholes and frustration. Even after a 6-0 start in one season in the minors, his tour of duty with the White Sox was limited to just three games as a left-handed relief pitcher. One highlight of that stretch was striking out All-Star Matt Holliday.

COMMON

“Those were the best three games in my life,” recalled Whisler.

If there are any bitter repercussions from the long summer sessions of minor league baseball, they are well tucked away in the enthusiastic and energetic Whisler.

“It’s hard to be bitter when you made it to the majors for no matter how many days it was,” Whisler said. “Most guys never have the opportunity to play in front of 30,000 people. I did.”

Now there has been one bigger day in his life than the night that he fanned Holliday on a cutter. He and his wife Kara recently welcomed triplets – Molly Ann, Vivian May and Gwen Kimberly – into the Whisler lineup.

“We may need some more gloves someday,” admitted Whisler.

Missing from the Whisler personality is a

major league ego. That missing component is happily greeted by clients.

“Wes is very humble,” said Paul while watching her son’s lesson. "He never talks about being a former major league player.”

Most of the Whisler scheme with his players involves physical techniques – including watching video of drills – and helping the players understand the grind of playing a game on a daily or weekly basis.

“Baseball is a long haul,” said Whisler. “You have to realize when a player is mentally cooked at this level or any level. We want to work with them on an individual basis and not focusing on them working one speed – hard, hard and harder. We don’t worry about hitting home runs and hitting 95 miles an hour on the radar gun.”

Members of the Baseball Academy can use a secret code to enter the facility during late

night or early morning moments. Whisler admits he enjoys seeing players working out on videos of those private moments shared by one or a few athletes.

And he was delighted earlier this year when alum Miller Watson of Lawrence North was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the amateur draft.

But Hastings has seen the Whisler touch on all the participants of his academy.

“He is the same with everyone,” Paula said. “It doesn’t matter how good they are or if they will play baseball in the future.”

TED ALLEN: CARMEL’S CLAIM TO CULINARY FAMEWriter / Janelle Morrison

Indy is starting the New Year off with a culinary bang. In just a couple weeks, the Indiana State Fairgrounds will host The Fantastic Food Fest January 16-17. Select vendors, wineries, breweries and restaurants will be featuring their fare and performing cooking demonstrations. Carmel’s own culinary celebrity Ted Allen along with another famed food television personality Hugh Acheson will be in town for this interactive experience for the hard-core foodies.

Allen, a 1983 Carmel High School graduate and member of the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame, doesn’t get back to his hometown too often, though his mother is a resident of Carmel near the high school where he was raised. He has been a guest speaker at a few local special events over the years. He spoke at the “Creme de la Carmel Fundraiser,” an art exhibit and silent auction that benefited the Carmel Clay Public Library in 2012. When approached with the opportunity to be one of the festival’s headliners, he “jumped at the chance to come home.”

Prior to his most recent success as host of Food Network’s “Chopped” and as a published author of two cookbooks, “The Food You Want To Eat: 100 Smart, Simple Recipes” and “In My Kitchen: 100 Recipes and Discoveries for Passionate Cooks,” Allen earned a degree in psychology at Purdue University, although he had a passion for journalism.

His first job was as a sports writer for the Lafayette Courier Journal. He enrolled at New York University where he completed his master’s degree in journalism. Allen moved to Chicago where he was eventually offered a position as a reporter for a Chicago-based newspaper. He became a member of the locally renowned group of restaurant critics known as the “Famished Four.”

Allen has also been a contributing writer for Esquire Magazine, contributing articles on the delectable delights in the food and wine world. Allen also received the James Beard Media Award in May 2012 for his work as the host of Chopped, and the show itself also won for best in-studio television program.

His introduction into the world of network television shows and reality TV began with a role on the Bravo TV series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and has appeared on several hit shows since such as “Uncorked: Wine Made Simple” and “Top Chef.” He expressed that his early passion for research and writing plays a role in his current projects and that every job has contributed to where he is today.

“Every job that I have ever had is essential to what I do today,” Allen said. “You have to be open to weird opportunities. It is very exciting to do TV. You have to reach a very large audience, and you get paid well.” In his spare time, he enjoys spending a Sunday afternoon with a bottle of wine, a group of his close friends and cooking in the kitchen.

When asked about the current trends that he sees prevalent in the culinary world today, Allen responded, “There is a trend in good cooking that is not confined to metropolitan areas like New York City or San Francisco. You can get a great organic burger in more local places, like Noblesville, Indiana. I can remember when it was difficult to find quality ingredients and even olive oil in this area. Now local places like Joe’s Butcher Shop offer grass-fed beef.”

Festival-goers can enjoy the ambiance and entertainment, provided in part by Allen and Acheson at the Fantastic Food Fest, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The festival is sponsored by Indiana Grown, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture’s “buy local” initiative. Tickets cost $15 each. Visit fantasticfoodfest.com or call 317-708-4401.

Billie Dragoo and Deborah Collins Stephens created the Indiana Conference for Women (ICW) to create a platform for women to connect, engage, discover, get inspired and innovate.

Dragoo was named one of the top 10 women entrepreneurs in our nation by Fortune Magazine. She was a winner of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur’s Award, former national Chairwoman and CEO of NAWBO and her firm Repucare was recently cited as one of the fastest growing in the nation.

Collins Stephens is a best-selling author of six books. As an executive coach and leadership development expert, she has worked with CEOs and entrepreneurs across the nation.

It was their vision that brought this conference to life four years ago.

The list of speakers is a “Who’s Who” of national and state leaders, business owners, authors and top executives who shared their stories and experiences. Here are comments and quotes overheard at the event:

Leadership Lessons presented by Dragoo and Collins Stephens: “To be outstanding, get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

“Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it’s inspiring.”

“Only dead fish go with the flow! You don’t get into something to test the waters; you go into things to make waves!”

“Worrying is literally betting against yourself.”

“Don’t wait for opportunity to find you. Go out and create it!”

“Seek to be worth knowing rather than being well known.”

Master of Ceremonies Gerry Dick says, “The Indiana Conference for Women has become one of those rare events that both empowers and inspires. It is an extraordinary experience.”

“It’s all about women supporting women,” says WTHR13 Anchor Andrea Morehead.

Sallie Krawcheck, Founder of Ellevest and former Wall Street Analyst, says she has interrupted a lot of group discussions by walking into a room filled mostly with men, and “never once was I told that I’d interrupted a conversation of how they could increase diversity within the company.”

“Cummins relies on innovation,” says Melina Kennedy, GM of Global Rail and Defense for Cummins. “We achieve this successfully because of the diversity in our company.”

“Girl, you’ve been given gifts. Use them. You will fall on your face, but you will get back up,” said Beth Brooke-Marciniak’s father to her as a young girl. “Take your success and figure out how you can positively impact the world with these gifts.”

Krawcheck’s father said to her when she was in third grade and feeling awkward, “You are pretty. Look at Gloria Steinem. She has glasses. She’s pretty, and she is changing the world.”

Keynote speaker Kathy Ireland, CEO and Chief Designer of Kathy Ireland Worldwide, was 40 years old when she learned that “No.”

is a complete sentence. Ireland says, “Our failures should not define us, but neither should our successes.”

“Crises come up,” says Ireland. “You don’t break down. You break through.”

The day included the Dolphin Tank where six female startup companies pitched their business. Advice: branding is critical. You must have a compelling story.

“We are all dolphins in this room. Dolphins work in a gam which is their family and are sensitive to other species in trouble,” shared Dolphin Tank moderator Amy Millman, CEO of Springboard Enterprises.

Aimee Kandrac, Founder of What Friends Do, who pitched in the 2014 Dolphin Tank, says, “The connections, advice and confidence I gained from the safe pitching environment like the Dolphin Tank allowed me to secure $500,000 in funding and gain experience to share with the next generation of female entrepreneurs.”

“You can’t make change if you are not at the table,” says Brooke-Marciniak, Global Vice Chair of Public Policy for Ernst & Young. “So be courageous enough not to be removed from the table.”

It’s time to Lean In.

Please visit indianaconferenceforwomen.com to register for 2016.

OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY OPENSNORTHSIDE LOCATION

One of the nation’s oldest top Christian universities, Olivet Nazarene University (ONU)

has opened its first site on the northside of Indianapolis. Their 17,000 square-foot building offers on-site classrooms and lab rooms that accommodate 15-20 students and houses eight full-time staff members.

ONU’s programs build on the students’ experiences and education. The university has strived to provide education with a Christian purpose since 1907. With more than 30 programs offered online and in over 100 different locations throughout Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, the School of Graduate

and Continuing Studies offers programs that “meet you where you are.”

“This is the first out-of-state site for Olivet,” stated Carrie Dilley, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications. “Our main campus was established and is located in Bourbonnais, Illinois. We have since opened sites in Michigan as well.

“In addition to our academic programs, one piece that we focus on and promote is our customer service. Our students can come in at any point in their career or education level, and we can help them achieve their goals. We have a student success team that assists them

from admission all the way through until graduation. We also have a financial solutions team that helps students find the best option in paying for school.”

Students will not only develop sound professional skills, but also an ethical perspective for applying them. ONU understands the time demands on their students’ schedules and the effort required by their job. The university differentiates themselves from other online universities with their accelerated programs that meet online or on campus only one night per week and are completed in less than two years. That, coupled with affordable tuition,

TOWNEPOST NETWORK / JANUARY 2016 / TownePost.com

provides value that is seldom equaled in today’s education market.

ONU offers business programs – designed to meet you where you are – at the associate, bachelor and master’s levels.

“We will be offering an inaugural MBA in February 2016,” explained Cati Lingle, Director of Educational Partnerships. “Students whose employers are part of our academic partnership will receive not only a 20% tuition discount but will also be able to register for their first course for free. We are waiving the fee for this February 29, 2016, rollout. If the students work for a company that doesn’t offer the partnership, there are other ways to qualify for tuition discounts. We are affiliated with several associations. For example, if the students are members of a nursing association that we have a relationship with, they are eligible for tuition discounts.”

ONU has entered an articulation agreement with Ivy Tech which offers Ivy Tech students, employees and alumni eligibility to receive ONU tuition discounts for programs offered through the Indianapolis location.

Other programs offered through ONU such as their Criminal Justice program provides an opportunity for professionals serving within the Criminal Justice career fields of law enforcement, probation, parole and corrections to remain employed while completing the online Criminal Justice degree requirements. Goodwill Education Initiatives, Inc., a not-for-profit organization conceptualized by Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana, Inc., was formed in 2004. The organization has since opened almost a dozen Excel Centers to meet the need of providing a structured curriculum for adults wishing to earn their high school diploma and advance their skills.

Five years ago, the first adult-focused accredited high school Excel Center opened, enrolling 317 students with an additional 2,000 people on the waiting list. With the need evident, this overwhelming response cemented their growth plan. It’s the first of its kind to be instructor-led, Goodwill Education Initiatives has created a template that cities across the country are pining to emulate.

“Currently, we have 11 locations in Central Indiana plus additional schools in South Bend, Austin, Texas and Memphis, Tennessee,” shares Scott Bess, President and Chief Operating Officer of Goodwill Education Initiatives. “Additional expansion is in the works both here in Indiana and nationally.”

“When we talked about opening an adult high school in Noblesville, eyebrows were raised due to the high graduation rate in area schools, implying that it wasn’t needed,” says Bess.

“But the reality is that a very small dropout rate of larger schools really represents a significant number. No one has a 100 percent graduation rate.”

Noblesville Excel Center Director Dr. Steve Dillon recently retired from Carmel-Clay Schools. “Dr. Dillon is passionate about helping students achieve,” states Bess. “It’s evident in his enthusiasm and work ethic. His attitude is contagious with the staff and students. He’s a wonderful asset to Goodwill Education Initiatives and acts as a mentor to other locations. His community connections are wonderful.”

Dr. Dillon has a soft spot for struggling student. “I understand for most teachers it is hard to like the last kid in the class. They are difficult and hard to teach, but they are the ones that need the most attention.” His passion is clearly helping those to succeed.

There are other dropout recovery schools, but most are computer-based. The Excel Centers have computer labs, but their success lies in the unique personal attention to the needs of the students. Each student walks in at a different level. During the first two days of orientation, skill levels are assessed, and then placed appropriately to help them succeed.

In Hamilton County with the growth and business expansion, it takes qualified workers to get those jobs. The Excel Center not only helps students earn their high school diploma, the students earn certificates in a field and find employment.

The Noblesville Excel Center is the first to partner with Ivy Tech. “We have a wonderful partnership with Ivy

Tech,” says Bess. “Noblesville is the first to co-locate with Ivy Tech but

won’t be the last.”

Not only has The Excel Center found Ivy Tech to be very accommodating, but the City of Noblesville and Noblesville School District are very supportive. “We have experienced a gracious start to our school,” says Dr. Dillon. “Mayor Ditslear and Dr. Niedermeyer are very supportive and have been very welcoming to us.”

As Goodwill began scouting locations in Hamilton County, they soon discovered Ivy Tech had room in a building recently purchased from the Noblesville school district (former junior high school). It is an ideal match. The academic feel to both institutions creates a mature learning environment.

“Our students walk in with the Ivy Tech students, which gives them a boost to walk into the same door as college students,” says Dr. Dillon. “And once our students experience success with learning, they will want to do more.”

Sessions are eight weeks in length. The entire education model is set up for success for applicants. The focus in on the Core 40 Diploma. All Excel Centers are accredited high schools. Students can take four 90 minute classes in eight weeks. Flexibility around jobs and childcare is thoughtfully considered and available. Classes are offered nights and weekends, in addition to during the week.

“If someone came in with zero credit, it would take two years to get their diploma,” says Dr. Dillon. And they don’t just get their high school diploma; a student must earn a vocational training certificate or be enrolled with Ivy Tech. Certified nursing assistant, welding and forklift operator are all examples of certificates. “There is a shortage of welders in the state of Indiana,” says Dr. Dillon.

On staff are four coaches that are personal life coaches, helping, encouraging and supporting the students get their diploma, and most importantly, a job. These coaches help with “soft skills” such as problem solving, teamwork and helping get into college if that is the goal.

With tons of initiative, support and encouragement, students feel respected and encouraged from the moment they enter the building. They are the brave ones taking the step to achieve more in their lives.

The word “success” could easily interchange with “Excel” to describe the school, for that it how it is set up – to help students achieve success.

Over 400 students competed at Noblesville West Middle School’s robotics competition. Known as the Jay Noblesville Classic, 80

teams competed for a state qualification spot. Teams represented schools from Plymouth, Portage and Jay County.

The competition was governed by the Robotics Education and Competition Foundation: Inspiring students, one robot at a time.

Known as VEX, teams from area junior highs and high schools competed for a chance to qualify for the next level of competition.

The goal with a team’s robot is to streamline the programming of the robot to create a smoother execution of its task.

“The kids are constantly tweaking and rebuilding their robot,” shares Brandon Crawford, Noblesville West Middle School

Robotics Coach. “It’s a lot of fun to watch the students and their robots in action.”

SPECIALIST GLENN KANT

Writer & Photographer / Kara Reibel

Celebrating their 12th anniversary in business, Aquarium Service and Design, Inc. creates custom aquariums, utilizing a thoughtful design process. They also provide maintenance and service to saltwater (and some freshwater) aquariums throughout Central Indiana. While they will service freshwater tanks, owner Glenn Kant’s specialty is saltwater reef tanks.

Kant’s love of aquatic life began as kid. “I got my first aquarium when I was 7 years old and had multiple tanks of fish in my bedroom growing up,” shares Kant. “Aside from my college years, I’ve always maintained a few tanks."

An avid scuba diver, Kant’s passion for fish and saltwater aquariums poured over until 1998 when he changed careers.

“I was ready for major life changes, and a new career was part of that,” says Kant. He went to work for an aquarium company,

and after a few years, he ventured out on his own.

There are many benefits to having an aquarium at home. “Many times, an aquarium replaces your TV,” shares Kant. “I have so many people, including doctors’ offices, who place a tank where a television would normally be. In an office setting, an aquarium provides a sense of calm, and it gets the patient’s mind off of why they are there. The same is said for having one in a home. Aquarium owners sit in front of it and stare at the fish and corals for de-stressing.”

A custom saltwater reef tank by Aquarium Service and Design includes a custom design tank, stand and canopy. However, the most important element is the custom design of the filtration system and adequate lighting. Kant fabricates his own filters and offers customized woodworking. Many times, Kant and his company are called in to clean, fix and improve existing tank systems.

Kant’s passion for building aquariums extends into working with designers and builders to create ones built into walls for

homes, not just businesses. Kant adds, “This is my passion. I want every coral, starfish and fish to live happily and give them the best life possible in captivity.”

As part of Kant’s business, he quarantines livestock, meaning he holds all animals in his holding systems until he is sure they are healthy, eating and ready for placement in their new environment.

“An aquarium is a complex and sensitive ecosystem,” says Kant. “Many people spend a good deal of money on a tank only to realize that they have bought inferior equipment for their intended vision.”

People invest in an aquarium, just as they do with any pet. It’s Kant’s experience that most of his clients just want to watch their fish eat but don’t want to clean the aquarium. He offers monthly, weekly and bi-weekly maintenance plans to help keep their investment, and their fish, healthy.

Kant, while not a vegan, does not eat seafood. He says, “I’d rather dive with them and view them in their natural habitat.”
