Depressionistas Unite!

Style is not about money – it is about being clever. We all have the ubiquitous stash of leftovers – those 30-75 (or more) yards of

something that you can’t bear to ditch. This is one of three “No Left-overs”

patterns designed to make the highest and best use of these semi-skeins. They

need happiness, they need a purpose – and you need to save cash and feel

creative.

The cowl is patterned after the Russian Wedding (interlocking) Band rings

featured by major jewelers (you know, blue box, red box…), which roll together

on the finger.

YARN: You can use 50-75 yards each of 3 colors. These were all knit with

Cascade 220 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, 220 yards = 100 grams. Probably

any DK or worsted weight. You want approx. 4 – 4 ½ stitches to the inch to

achieve a circumference of 21+ inches. Raid your leftover stash! If you have less

– make shorter (less high) bands – there are no rules.

NEEDLES/GAUGE: US 10 (6 mm) size circular (16”) needle and was able to do

approx. 4 stitches to the inch. You are aiming at about a “21 inch plus“ final

circumference, and the pattern can be modified to accommodate your yarn.

PATTERN: Just knitting in the round with enough stitches cast on to give you a

21”+ circumference. (To fit over the head.) This sample was knit in 85 stitches.

Note: Your 3 pieces will roll onto themselves – perfect, no problem, that is

what you are aiming at, we want roundness, roundness is a good thing.

Cast On 85 stitches of FIRST color and work as follows:

Join the stitches in the round (place a marker if you wish) be really careful not

to twist the stitches (this is not a mobius piece and will not play nice with the

others).

Knit like mad until the circle is 7” high. Bind off really loosely and weave in

ends.

Cast On 85 stitches of SECOND color and work as follows:

CAVEAT – before you join the needles in the round – put them through the

center of the first finished ring (making sure you do not have twisted stitches) –

this is the interlocking thing. Don’t worry about direction because each roll can

be put in either an in or out direction afterward.

Knit like mad until the circle is 7” high. Bind off really loosely and weave in

ends.

______________________________

Cast On 85 stitches of THIRD color and work as follows:

Again, before you join the needles in the round – put them through the center of

both the first two finished rings (making sure you do not have twisted stitches).

Again…Knit like mad until the circle is 7” high. Bind off really loosely and

weave in ends. Okay, you are done. You can flip the rings to either side for

effect (ridges or smooth.) Again, your choice, there are few style rules – only

mechanical ones.

Issues:

Not enough yarn? If you don’t have enough of one color and it ends up only 3” -

6” – so what, it still works, you are the master of your universe.

Want more rings? You have my permission, go for it – but you might want to

keep them a little shorter (remember, every time you add one, it makes the whole

snugger around the neck). We try not to choke for fashion.

And for the special bonus……

WHY NOT A PARTY FOR THREE? (This is the Party Game Thing)

Back to that frugal, recessionista thing… if you want a cowl with three different

colors (yarns) but don’t want to buy 3 skeins. Then….

Three friends should buy one skein of Cascade 220 each (or whatever your

choice that provides enough yardage of the right size) – each in a different but

yet complimentary color. Two complimentary plus a “punch” color works well.

Over coffee, wine, or knibbly-bits…. (or all of the above)

Each one should knit a 7” high circle with their color of choice. (Per the above

directions/suggestions.) When done…each passes their skein to the one on their

left (clockwise).

Then each knits a 5” high circle with the second color (using the above

directions, bringing the needles through the previous circle). When this is

complete, each passes that skein to the one on the left.

You then each knit a final round through the first two circles. Because everyone

knits loosely, tighter or medium…there will be a variation on the final

“leftovers” – use what is left - whether smaller or up to 8”. Again, variety is the

spice of life. This last skein will probably go home with you if the party has gone

on too long.

If you are really anti-social - or have to come up with three identical gifts – just

use all three skeins by yourself and pass them to your other two personalities…
