Hard to believe it has already been a year since my

first president’s report.After being re-elected

at our AGM (I still think because no one else wanted the job!) I am coming to grips with my role.First, thanks to the committee. Your

great efforts over the past year have helped re-invigorate our club. All members still have the task of trying

to increase membership. Hopefully by having great club evenings and being positive about the club, existing and new members will keep attending. Our meetings are producing fantastic new finds and members are putting efforts in to what they can bring to display.And speaking of bringing to our club

nights – welcome to all! We must always make the club welcoming to all comers,

be positive about what the club has to offer to existing members and prospective new members . I will be away on holidays for

the July meeting but I am sure vice-president Peter can handle all issues while I am away,When I return, the committee and

club members will have to ramp up our preparations for our October 23 show. Committee meetings seem to work

well one week before our club meeting (third Monday, 7.30pm).Please tell any committee members of any issues you want to raise.Hope you have a great bus trip to the

Maryborough show. Remember, final numbers for this great road trip need to be in at our July and August meetings. See you all there.Enjoy what you collect.

Swap meet drawing power growsIt may not yet have the

tradition of Bendigo or the sheer geographical size of

Ballarat, but the Geelong Swap Meet is fast becoming an annual fixture for many collectors.

They turned out in their

hundreds again this year, swarming over the Geelong Showgrounds blessed with brilliant autumn sunshine. They came in the hope of adding an elusive trophy to their collections, of finding a new project to tackle

headlong or merely to enjoy the thrill of the hunt and to daydream.

Yes, there were projects only for the diehard automotive enthusiast. But there were also plenty of bargains to be had. And as always, the displays of pristine vehicles –

on sale or just on show – were a highlight.

It would have been a very finicky collector who walked away from the showgrounds empty-handed or unimpressed.

FUN IN THE SUN: Plenty of collectors were happy to take advantage of mild weather and wander the aisles at this year’s Geelong Swap Meet. The serious collectors were there before the sun came up.

timely boost to club coffersThe club has managed to

turn its first ever market day into a tidy profit,

adding around $600 to the coffers as the countdown to this October’s show continues.

There were more than enough positives from the club’s first foray as a “market day entrepreneur” to outweigh the few inevitable hiccups that occurred.

And it must be remembered that this was essentially a mini trash and treasure market in suburban Rugby Street in Belmont early on a Saturday morning.

A few stallholders were able to set up inside on the Friday, while others set off before daybreak on Saturday. (Joe and Dot were the envy of all chilled early birds and club members on Saturday because their stall was next to a heater!)

Having all stall holders assigned to a pre-allocated spot eased some of the potential headaches and there were any number of club members willing to help unload vehicles to aid stallholders.

In all, there were about 40 sites, plus free ones for the club and the 1st Belmont scout group, whose hall was taken over for the market. Some stall holders had quiet sales but others were very happy.

The club-run barbecue proved a handy money spinner (as well as keeping Tony and Alan slightly warmer than most in the cold early hours).

Whether we hold the same kind of market in the future remains to be seen. Some of the major outlays we had this time around such as the stencils will enable us to make cheaper signs from now on (these proved much more effective than newspaper advertising). Some suggestions being bandied around at the end of the day were for a collectables/bottles-only swap and sell day, or another market day every two years.

Thanks to all, especially Peter, Tracey and Alan for helping set up, all club stall holders for pitching in and packing up, Alan, Peter and Tony for getting us so many donated goods and Elsie for her donated pickles.

The market day barbecue was not the first we’d run this year. The club had

already run two barbecue days outside Bunnings at Corio and Waurn Ponds; both were a real success.

Not as much stock was needed to cover this barbecue as there was some surplus left over from the Bunnings ones. However I purchased an extra $62.60 worth to start the day off.

We were also selling tea and coffee as well, with bacon and eggs being a big hit early on a freezing cold morning. As the day warmed up, so did the sausage sales, the egg and bacon slowing down just as we ran out of eggs. They came off the menu

and replaced by sausage with bacon. Alan was working hard flipping and turning and I was busy dishing up and serving.

It eventually came time to make a decision, so we sent Craig off to get some more sausages. Then, because Craig was the number one customer, we needed some more. A further $25.10 in purchases was enough to get us through and we sold the last sausage at around 1pm.

By this stage my apron pocket had a lot of weight in it. A profit of $319.25 was made in about 5½ hours work. Going by the serviettes we used, around 160 serves of food were sold.

We still have some stock left over including soft drink and

bottled water. I am sure this will be sold at our show in October.

A big thank-you goes out to Alan Snowden for his culinary skills (although I think he just wanted to keep warm over the barbecue earlier on), Peter Harding for helping set up, Craig Finegan for doing the run around for us and to all at the club who supported the barbecue on the day.

A special thank-you goes out to club president David Smith for all his hard work in putting this event together, along with everyone else who helped.

Definitely no sausages for me for tea that night when I got home!
