FROM THE PRINCIPAL

This will be the last newsletter for Term 3. It has been a fantastic term with many learning opportunities

for students. Thank you to all staff, students and parents for a great term of learning, sporting

achievements, academic achievements, musical / art achievements – it has been an excellent team

effort from all in the Milgate school community.

This week the Year 5 and 6 musical ‘Danger Kids’ was performed at the Doncaster Secondary College

Performing Arts Theatre on Monday 16 September and Tuesday 17 September. It was an outstanding

performance with many of our students showing their talents. We have some very talented singers,

dancers and actors who performed very well. Well done to all students. Thank you to Jenny Batten

who produced and directed the musical. Also thank you to the Year 5 and 6 teachers – Karlie Gooding,

Fiona Bashford, Jasmine Cergol, David Mander, Krissy Wong and Claire Harvey-Beavis who have also

worked hard training the students and assisting Jenny Batten in many areas of the production. Thank

you to Judy Gallagher and the Year 5 and 6 students who provided the props and the fantastic

projected backdrops which added to the performance. Thank you also to Diana Liew for her assistance

and to the Education Support staff – Alex Gaythorpe, Paula Botha, Pam Kemp, Julie Austin and Judy

Hearn. There were also other staff who assisted on the nights with makeup, etc. Congratulations to

everyone for a fantastic production – another great team effort.

Coming up early next term are the Year 2 Camp at Oasis Camp in Mount Evelyn, on Thursday 10

October and Friday 11 October, and the Year 1 Sleepover in the stadium on Friday 18 October and

Saturday 19 October. Students are looking forward to these special events.

ONE TO ONE IPAD PROGRAM FOR 2014 YEAR 3 AND 5 STUDENTS PARENT MEETING ON MONDAY 21 OCTOBER AT 7PM In 2014, all Year 3 and 5 students will require their own iPad provided by parents to use at school as

part of the learning program. The students who have their own iPads this year will continue to use them

each year as they progress through the school. There will be a meeting for all 2013 Year 2 and Year 4

parents on Monday 21 October at 7pm. At this meeting information will be provided about the one to

one iPad program, expectations, protocols, use and the educational program. Parents will also have an

opportunity to ask questions. A notice will be sent home at the beginning of Term 4 with details of the

meeting and documents relating to the iPad program.

CHINESE STUDENT VISIT – MONDAY 7 OCTOBER – FRIDAY 11 OCTOBER All is in place for the visit to Milgate of 12 students and 6 teachers from our sister school in China-

Beijing Kindergarten and Experimental Primary School of Beijing Normal University. The Milgate PS

host families have made contact with their Chinese host students, and their families, and all are looking

forward to the experience. Two of the teachers, who will be visiting Milgate, teach in the Kindergarten in

Beijing and they will be spending a day at Catjump Preschool so they can experience an Australian

kindergarten. The students and teachers will arrive on Monday 7 October at approximately 3:30pm.

Each day the Chinese students and teachers will spend time in Milgate PS classrooms learning about

education in Australia. Thank you to the parents who have volunteered to assist, during the week,

interpreting for our visitors and also with providing lunches for the Chinese teachers.

Please note that for the first week next Term there will be NO assembly on the Monday (7 October)

but assembly will be on Tuesday (8 October) at 9am instead. This is because we want to welcome

our Chinese visitors and they are only arriving on Monday afternoon at about 3:30pm. From Week 2

next term we will return to the normal time for assemblies on Mondays at 3:00pm.

We wish everyone in the school community a safe, relaxing and enjoyable holiday and look forward to

seeing everyone returning in Term 4 ready for another fantastic term of learning at Milgate PS.

NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS

The Doncaster Police have received feedback from schools within Manningham regarding traffic related

issue zones during drop-off and pick-up times.

In order to address the concerns raised, Police will be conducting and focusing on school zones at the

commencement of next term. Police will be targeting speeding, compliance with traffic signs, mobile

phones and seatbelt offences. Attention will also be paid to the behaviour of pedestrians and cyclists.

In working with the community to provide safe School Zones, this will be a high visibility zero tolerance

operation.

Term 3 Prep Inquiry - Our Co-operative Community

Fire Fighters Andy, Sally and Mike brought their fire truck to Milgate and showed us

their special tools and safety gear. They also taught us about ‘good fires’ and ‘bad fires’ and how to keep ourselves safe around fires. We were able to climb aboard the truck and we even got a little bit wet from the powerful

hose! It was fabulous!

Eva from the Responsible Pet Ownership Program came with her dog Marli to teach us

how to stay safe around dogs. We joined in with her songs and actions.
