NITROGEN CYCLE
Raveena Raphi
Nitro• an essential part of the amino acids. It is a
basic element of life.
gen
n + es‘‘nitre forming’’
• composes about four-fifths (78.03 percent) by volume of the atmosphere.
•in the form of protein is an important constituent of animal tissue.• is an important element in plant nutrition.•is inert and serves as a diluent for oxygen in burning and respiration processes.
Position in Periodic Table• It is placed in the p-block .• It belongs to the 15th group.

Properties of Nitrogen
• Colourless, Odourless gas.• Slightly soluble in water.• Chemically unreactive at ordinary
temperature.

Nitrates through lightning-Nitrogen Fixation
• During lightning nitrogen in atmosphere combines with O2 to form nitric oxide(NO).
• Ie, at high temparatures. N2 + O2 2NOWhen this combine with more O2, what happens? 2NO + O2 2NO2
• NO2 dissolves in water to form nitric acid, and reaches the soil.
• And changes to nitrate salt.• Root plants take up these nitrate salt.• And converted into aminoacids, which unite to
form plant proteins.• Nitrogen fixation can also be carried by certain
bacteria.
Organic Wastes for the growth of plants
• Vermi compost• Green Manure• Bone meal• Ash• Cowdung• Fish manure…… These all contains ammonia
Ammonia
• Chemical formula : NH3• Density : Less than air• Smell : Pungent Smell• Colour : Colourless
