With this in mind, the Hospice has set up a new business venture which runs as a social enterprise — Ecozorb Animal Bedding Solutions — and, like any other activity we run, all proceeds come straight back to Nightingale House.

The animal bedding is manufactured in our own factory in Wrexham and converts new and reclaimed cardboard into a high quality, dust free, animal bedding product. We have customers who use this product for horses, pigs, chickens, dogs and small pets, such as guinea pigs and rats. Please see below for more information.

4 Nightingale News, Autumn 2013

This summer has been a busy time for Nightingale House, with a mixture of both celebration and reflection.

Patients enjoyed a special musical treat, when we were visited by members of the string section of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. They played on the patio of one of our family rooms during the hot weather enjoyed in July.

Patients attending our Day Unit were taken for a lovely day out to Llangollen, where they enjoyed a picnic and a ride on a canal boat from Llangollen, over the aquaduct to Chirk and back again.

Also in the Day Unit, we were privileged to celebrate the 90th birthday of Eric Lloyd MBE, one of our longest serving volunteers, who has given many hours of his time to our Cuckoo’s Group, our Day Unit and also on night duty during our early years on Chester Road.

Our team of nurses and staff bid a fond farewell to Ros Middleton, who retired as Night Sister. Ros joined the team back in 1995 when we first opened, which triggered a lot of reminiscence among us, as I’m sure you can imagine.

Heather Richardson, from Help the Hospices, came to Nightingale House and gave a presentation to Trustees and Senior Managers, as well as senior staff and board members from other North Wales Hospices, on the findings of the ‘Commission into the Future of Hospice Care’. This is vital information for helping hospices prepare for potential demand in future years.

For some of you, this may all seem like ‘old news’ if you have been following my new ‘Clinical

Fond Farewells and CelebrationsTracy LivingstoneDirector of Nursing and Patient Services

Blog’ on the Hospice website. The aim of the blog is to provide insight into the daily routine of Nightingale House, as well as signposting the readers to important events, both local and national, in palliative care. Please check out the blog and send us your comments about what you would like to see in the future.

Looking forward into the autumn, this September Nightingale House will say a very sad goodbye to our Nurse Manager, Gail Caddell, as she leaves us to take up a new post of Lead Nurse at Jersey Hospice.

Gail will be well known to many of you who have had contact with the Hospice since we opened on Chester Road in 1995. She has played a big part in the development of the services delivered by Nightingale House.

Whilst she will be sadly missed by all the team, we wish her well in her new job in Jersey which is a worthy reward for her long commitment, both to Nightingale House Hospice and to Palliative Care services.

Rehabilitation has become an increasing focus, particularly in cancer care and palliative care services, as patients are living longer with and, in an increasing number of cases, are surviving beyond a diagnosis of cancer.

Rehabilitation services at Nightingale House have three main elements — physiotherapy, occupational therapy and the hydrotherapy pool.

World wide, people have become more aware of Rehabilitation as an important aspect of a patient’s continuing quality of life. Symptoms that people previously had to accept, have now been recognised as being manageable. If patients receive the right advice, from the right people, at the right time, they can learn how to adapt.

Rehabilitation is aimed at maintaining patients’ quality of life, despite the limitations of disease or the effects of any treatment. For example; a patient with secondary bone cancer may have reduced mobility. But after assessment we can set realistic goals and advise on how to increase what they can do, gradually, with the use of exercises and walking aids to help them reach those goals. We aim to give our patients information, practical advice and psychological support, as well as working closely with other professionals to empower our patients to

manage their condition based on their needs and preferences.

Therapists at Nightingale House have input into ‘The Monday Programme’ and deliver sessions on breathlessness, fatigue, relaxation and exercise.

They have also introduced Rehabilitation Care Plans, so the nursing staff can support the patients with their rehabilitation when the therapists are not on duty.

The Occupational Therapist plays a major role in discharge planning, making sure patients can manage their activities of daily living. Sometimes, the needs are complex and involve assessment of the home situation, training and supporting carers, and assessing and providing equipment.

Patients have reported back about how the hydrotherapy and rehabilitation services have helped them.

One of our patients said, “I understand now, that if I take my time and breathe as you have shown me, I won’t feel as anxious and can achieve more. I know I will always be breathless, but now I know how to manage it”.

Rehabilitation enables purposeful activity and can motivate patients to continue living their lives despite continuing change. Rehabilitation

is about preventing crisis by identifying problems early and taking a problem solving approach to enable that individual to live their life their way.

A hydrotherapy appointment costs £60, and both a physiotherapy out-patient appointment and an occupational therapy appointment cost £40 each. It is important that we are able to continue offering these services to patients. That’s why we rely on your continued support, for which we are very grateful.

Light up a Life 2013Friday 13 December 2013, 7pmNightingale House Hospice

At Nightingale House Hospice, we understand that dealing with a loss can be very challenging, and often families look to remember their loved ones in a positive and lasting way.

Light up a Life offers the opportunity to remember and celebrate the life of a loved one, in a special way, by adding a light in their memory to the Hospice Christmas tree. By giving a small donation to the Hospice, using the leaflet enclosed, the Hospice will also enter your loved ones into a special Book of Memories, which will be available to view throughout 2014 in the Hospice reception. The book can also be viewed at our service in Wrexham, where the Tree of Lights will be lit for the first time. We encourage you to join us at this special service with your family and friends. These lights will shine each night, up until Twelfth Night.

Please see the leaflet enclosed for further information and to enter your dedications into this year’s event. If you would like to make your dedication online, please visit www.treeoflights.co.uk.

A number of services will also be held in the local community at the following venues:

Working in the Distribution Centre at Whitegate Industrial Centre — we need volunteers every day to help sort and price the masses of donated goods to keep our shops supplied. This is a vital role as the shops provide over £130,000 of income to the Hospice each year.

We couldn’t run our fundraising events without the support of our volunteers. If you cannot make a regular commitment but would still like to volunteer then helping at events could be ideal for you. You can choose which events you can help with, knowing that your efforts help to raise valuable funds for the Hospice.

Last year we raised £16,000 from street collections and bag packs, all of which were manned by our volunteer army. Even if you can only help at one event each year, it would make such a difference to the Hospice.

Legacies are special gifts from one generation to another.

It’s a little known fact that most charities wouldn’t survive without gifts in Wills. By remembering Nightingale House Hospice in this way, you’re helping to ensure that our good work lives on to help and support future generations of local people.

No one likes to think about making a Will and people have all sorts of reasons for not making one. They don’t have time. They don’t believe it’s important. Its not the right time. However, your Will is an important way of looking after the future of your family and friends.

Having an up-to-date Will is probably one of the most important things you can do to ensure your wishes will be carried out exactly as you wanted. And it’s the only way to protect the rights of your children and loved ones.

After you’ve taken care of your loved ones, you may also wish to leave a gift in your Will to a cause close to your heart and, if this is the case, please consider leaving a gift to Nightingale House.

We can assure you that every penny will support the vital work of the Hospice for future generations.

The time of gift-getting for friends and family is fast approaching. But when budgets are tight and wallets are light, getting everyone their stocking-fillers can be difficult.

That’s why savvy shopper Jo Kearns set herself the challenge of ticking off her Christmas shopping list in Nightingale House charity shops this year.

“Buying big brands in big stores is so expensive

Christmas Shopping Ideasnowadays, and when you’re buying for lots of people, it all mounts up.

“I find a really easy way to keep a cap on how much you spend for Christmas is to buy your presents in quality charity shops — like Nightingale House shops.

“You’ll find something special that you wouldn’t get elsewhere. And I think the best presents are the ones that are a little bit different”.

10 Nightingale News, Autumn 2013

Congratulations to all of our 2013 Hospice Heroes for everything you have done so far this year raising funds for Nightingale House.

More than 200 supporters have signed up to become a Hospice Hero by walking, running, swimming, cycling, trekking and jumping out of planes.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2013 Hospice Hero Award Ceremony in January 2014. Thank you so much for all you are doing.

Here is a snippet of how our Hospice Heroes have been challenging themselves so far this year. What could you do next year?

David Goodwin has raised more than £500 by taking part in the Deloitte Ride across Britain.

Dr Khan, of Caergwrle Medical Practice, has raised nearly £3,600 in successfully taking on the gruelling Everest Base Camp Trek.

Elizabeth Webster, Alexis Molyneux and Tracey Roberts have completed the Liverpool Half Marathon.

Elizabeth raised over £220 whilst Alexis and Tracey teamed up and raised £380 between them.

Mark Jones took on the London to Paris bike ride earlier in the year and raised over £1,730!

Diane, Graham, Matthew and Josh Mann have raised nearly £2,400 by participating in the Three Peaks Challenge and conquering Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis all at once!

Rob Morgan put his fitness to the test at the London Marathon earlier in the year, raising over £1,000 for Nightingale House.

Finally, some of our younger supporters, Jake and Ella Davies, Tesni, Aaron and Sophie planned their own challenge, a three mile walking/cycling route around Llangollen incorporating beautiful scenery, such as the Dinas Bran Castle, the canal and even some local pubs for the adults to ‘supervise’ them from. Altogether, they raised nearly £800!

It has been wonderful to see so many of our corporate supporters taking part inTeam Building

Challenge activities, including the Raft Race and Skydive. These are events which we will continue to host in 2014.

Staff at AVOX, Wrexham, took on their own Team Building Challenge back in June by entering two teams into the Chester Dragon Boat race and raising £1,500. Our thanks go to everybody who took part.

If you would like details on how to enter your company into next year’s Dragon Boat Race, on behalf of Nightingale House Hospice, please visit www.chesterdragonboatfestival.co.uk.
