Aberdeen Hospital Summer High School Co-op

Students

Three Pictou County high school students entering Grade 12 in September were part of a summer co-operative program that gave them the opportunity to experience the wide range of career opportunities in health care. Each student completed 200 hours of placement at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow and with other Nova Scotia Health Authority programs and services in the county. For the fifth year, the Aberdeen Hospital has partnered with the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board to offer the program which is generously funded by the Aberdeen Health Foundation.

International Students Participate in the NS Lung Association’s Runway Run

The International Students had the opportunity to run on the runway they arrived on by plane during NS Lung Association’s Runway Run 5 km Race on Saturday, September 10. They all seemed to have a great time, despite the predawn departure.

The run was a charitable “fun” run, but the competitive side of some of our Nighthawks came out!

Martin Jung finished 3rd overall (1st in the 1-19 age group, males) Katerina Nemcova finished 17th overall (1st in the 1-19 age group, females) Tom Tang finished 9th overall (3rd in the 1-19 age group, males)

We finished the day at the Pictou County Multi-cultural Association Fusion Festival where NRHS NSISP Student Ambassador, Sarah Khan, was volunteering.

Winter Weather is Coming: Early Dismissal Pilot for CCRSB Schools Deciding when to keep schools open, and when to cancel them during the winter can be challenging. CCRSB staff consult with multiple weather forecasts and forecasters, check on road conditions throughout the school board region via the RCMP and the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation, as well as our own staff members on the ground in each area, to help make the call to cancel school. This year, we’re trying something new. Beginning this winter season, CCRSB schools and offices will be participating in an early dismissal pilot. Days when the forecast predicts developing winter weather conditions (blowing snow, icy roads, freezing rain, etc.) late in the day, CCRSB may consider announcing an early dismissal for schools. The early dismissal will be based on predicted weather conditions for certain geographical areas (Pictou, Colchester, Cumberland and East Hants), just like morning cancelations. Individual schools will not be dismissed early, only groups of schools, by geographical area. Why is this pilot needed? The early dismissal pilot has two goals:

To reduce the number of instructional (learning) days lost to a full day cancelation due to the weather, while keeping the health and safety of students and staff our top priority.

To assist parents and guardians in their planning for days when the forecasted weather is poor.

How will it work? Early dismissal will be one or two hours before the usual school day end. For example, on a day when a one-hour early dismissal is announced in the morning, a school normally dismissing at 2:30 pm would dismiss at 1:30 pm that day. Bussed students who normally arrive at their bus stop at 3:15 pm should arrive at their bus stop at 2:15 pm. The end of the day simply rolls back an hour or two depending on the early dismissal decision. How will students, parents and guardians know about the early dismissal?

The early dismissal decision will be announced on the school board website (ccrsb.ca), Twitter and Facebook by 6:30 am.

The “All Schools OPEN” button on the CCRSB website will turn orange, and will read “Early Dismissal”. Click on the button to get information about the early dismissal decision, including were it will be happening.

The early dismissal decision will be sent to all local media, to be carried on the radio and on news websites.

Schools will announce the early dismissal on their own websites, and via their social media channels.

Some schools may also choose to send an “Alert” email or text message to parents and guardians, announcing the early dismissal.

Questions about the early dismissal pilot can be directed to school principals, CCRSB Student Transportation at 902-897-5561 or CCRSB’s Operations Department at 902-897-8930.

New year and new initiatives for students and teachers

As we head into year two of Nova Scotia's Action Plan for Education, there are many more exciting initiatives for students at all grade levels this

school year.

This fall, students in grades Primary to 3 will benefit from hands-on learning, including using floor robots to learn sequencing and programming.

Students in grades 4-6 will benefit from Innovation and Exploration Kits that include Spheros and Makey Makey invention kits. Students in grades 7

to 12 will learn coding through events, such as the Hour of Code and STEAM Olympics, and courses, such as Computer Programming 12. Coding

promotes problem solving, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity and innovation. These skills are not only related to learning math, science and the

arts, but they are also directly linked to many careers, including computer programming and the marine industries.

With the province's first literacy strategy for students in all grades, there will be a greater focus on the teaching of reading and writing and the

development of oral communication skills. Reading Recovery support has been increased for grade 1 students. Students in grades 4 to 6 will have a

renewed curriculum, with more time for literacy and math. Class caps are expanded to grades 4 to 6.

To help more students succeed in math, additional supports will be made available for both teachers and students. Career education outcomes will

assist students as they begin thinking about their futures and the many possibilities ahead. To learn more about what is new this year, go to

http://novascotia.ca/educationactionplan/ to sign up for ongoing updates from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

NRHS Band Program The Band Program is off to a running start. Senior Band rehearsals began on September the 14th and combos began forming on September 16th. We look forward to three performing combos by the end of the month. On September 12 the Band Auxiliary was formed with registration starting officially on September 13. On September 26, the band attended a concert by the Marimba duo Tactis at NGA. The first fundraiser of the year was the drink sale at the first NRHS Spirit Dance on September 22. $410.50 was raised for the school band program. The first concert to feature all concert bands in the Pictou West part of the county will be held at the NRHS theatre on Nov. 20. We look forward to playing this first concert featuring works by Bach, Kevin Mixon and Hankus Netsky. The time is IBS at this moment. Proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Veterans Wing in Pictou.

Scotsburn 4-H 2016-2017 The new 4-H year will be getting underway on Oct. 17, 2016. We will be having an information session and registration on that evening. The meeting will take place at the Scotsburn Elementary School at 7:00 for newcomers and 7:30 for past members. At 7:00 we will be going over 4-H requirements, etc for people new to the program. At 7:30 we will be going over what projects are available in the club and passing out registration forms. A parent(s) is asked to attend this meeting with their child/children. All past members are welcome as well as any new children who will be 9 years old (or older) as of Jan.1, 2017. 2015-2016 members must have completed their projects last year in order to be eligible this year. Children who are 8 years old as of Jan.1, 2017 are eligible to attend as Cloverbuds. There will be a $30.00 registration fee. $20.00 pays for club registration to the provincial and national 4-H Councils, and $10.00 will be in place of monthly dues which we use for the general running of the club. Deadline for registration is October 24th. On Oct. 17th we hope to have a list of all projects available for the coming year. We are always looking for new leaders because this provides the club with a wider base of projects from which the children can choose. The first general meeting will be Oct. 24, 2016. Our general meetings are usually held on the 3rd or 4th Monday of each month. We encourage parents to attend these meetings with their children so that important announcements, dates and activities are known and marked on the calendar. If you have any questions please give me a call at 485-8204. Thank you, Cathy Lavers
