Setting the context Nationally

•  As part of Every Child Matters and National Strategies there is major, whole school focus on enhancing provision for Gifted and Talented children and young people

Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) uses the following definitions :

Gifted - students who have the ability to excel academically in one or more subjects such as English, Drama, Technology

Talented – students who have the ability to excel in practical areas such as Art and Design, Music, PE, or performing arts such as Dance

Setting the context

Locally – Lincolnshire :

•  60 secondary Schools / 282 Primary schools / 21 special schools

•  Significant provision and support for ‘Gifted’ co-hort •  Need for enhanced provision and support for ‘Talented’ co-hort

As result : •  Proposed and developed ‘Talent Lincolnshire’ – county strategy for

supporting Talented Children and Young People •  Countywide model for identifying, developing and celebrating talent

•  Launched April 2009

Enhanced opportunities for physical activity : The National Context

Public Service Agreement (PSA) and the White Paper

Two key aims :

Increase the percentage of 5-16 year olds participating in at least two hours per week of high-quality PE and sport at school and the percentage of 5-19 year olds participating in at least three further hours per week of sporting opportunities.

Ensure all pupils go to a school that promotes their health and wellbeing

CHALLENGES

• Promotion of talent in PE and School Sport at KS2/3 transition.

• Creation of a facility to serve the local multi-skills clubs.

• Provision of cost effective CPD for primary link teachers, SSCO’s and other support staff.

CHALLENGES (continued)

•  Supporting the furtherance of experiences and subject knowledge of student/coach volunteers.

•  Raising awareness of the concept and value of the multi skills approach.

•  Encouraging a pro-active interchange of ideas and support between the most able students and those in the earlier developmental stage.
