Architecture 320 Textile Gallery Spring 2009 Professor James Dicker

The textile gallery design is an infill project with the goal of holding the edge of the street. The daylighting system efficiently allows light to pentrate the ciculation spaceswhile preventing direct sunlight from entering the galleries.

The field and object market cre-ates a curved element on the corner to bring pedestrian traffic from the boulevard to the park. The market stalls protruding through the roof plane allow day-light to enter the building.

A series of market stalls surrounds the cloister. Structure goes from thin to thick from the center out. Panels are arranged so that the grain around the building is oriented toward the cloister.

The market is organized to have seasonal stalls to the park while having year round access in the atrium. Daylight penetrates the space through skylights, clerestories, and wall washes.

The exploded axon, along with the plan and section, displays how Ando uses the glass block as a screen to the street while repeat-ing the simple vertical element of the wall in plan to create a series of spaces that high-lights a progression of private to public.

The rain screen acts as a sepa-rate skin system on the exterior of the building. Interaction be-tween rain screen and galleries is depicted through shadows of activity and individual concrete spaces.

The installation completes the man-made grade of the site.The grid created by the nodes of lights completes the gap across the hills inbewteen the bridges and continues the structural meter that is established underneath the rail bridges designating the pedestrian zone.

the project focuses on us-ing the pyramid shaped glass elements to reflect light and views from the courtyard into each other and themselves.

The concrete cube is pure-ly subtractive in nature. The subtracted mass is generated by a single square object that is then rotated and penetrated to different degrrees to achieve various plays of shadow and dimension along the larger cube’s surface.
