ngineering Excellence Awards 2017

T.Y. Lin International and their client Multnomah County won the 2017 Engi-neering Excellence Project of the Year for the Sellwood Bridge Replacement.

When cracks were discovered in the deteriorating girders of the Sellwood Bridge and a nearby hillside was slowly sliding into the river, Multnomah County launched a three-year planning process to evaluate rehabilitation and replacement options.

The new bridge carries two vehicular lanes, two bike lanes, two shared-use side-walks, and will accommodate future streetcar service.

Completed on a fast-track schedule, the project includes the bridge, moderniza-tion of the Highway 43 interchange, and stabilization of the hillside located west of and above the bridge and interchange.

T.Y. Lin reduced the fi nal bridge footprint signifi cantly from early concepts, reducing project costs and minimizing environmental disturbances. The design team also developed an innovative approach to landslide mitigation, combining geotechnical design with a foundation design for the stability needed to found the deck arch against the west hillside.

Construction involved sliding the original bridge over to a detour alignment to keep traffi c moving until the new bridge was completed. This solution saved the county one year of construction time and up to $10 million in costs, and received worldwide media attention.

WHAT IS ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE? The Engineering Excellence Awards is an annual design competition which recognizes engineering achievements that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement and value. A panel of judges spend a day evaluating and discussing the projects and rate them based on: Unique-ness and/or innovative application of new or existing techniques; Future value to the engineering profession and enhanced public awareness/enthusiasm for the role of engineering; Social, economic and sustainable development considerations; Complexity; and Successful fulfi llment of client/owner’s needs, including schedule and budget. These projects attest to the continuing impact ACEC Oregon fi rms have on the quality of life in Oregon, south-west Washington and throughout the world.
