When I think back to my high school years, we were all given horrible advice. The path to success was de-fined with only a single route to success: university. A degree, according to the educators of the late 90s, was the only way to ensure financial security. Those who refused to pay the price of post-secondary education were doomed to slave their life away in the trades. During one of those “what do you want to be?” exer-cises in school, I remember my friend Chris announcing he wanted to follow in his dad’s footsteps and become a construction worker. With a stoned-face, our teacher told him that if he applied himself, he could achieve so much more. Chris did apply himself, just not in a classroom. While so many others were in lecture halls acquiring knowledge (and obscene amounts of debt), Chris took a job as a go-fer with a con-struction company. Fast forward to four years later, when many in my co-hort finished their degrees

and moved back in with their parents, Chris had just bought his first home. In recent years, govern-ments have come around to see how ignorant the education system is when it comes to skilled trades. In Ontario, for example, the provincial government re-cently nearly quadrupled its investment in Skills On-tario to $5 million a year. The funding will be used to promote the trades to stu-dents beginning as early as Grade 1. During the pandemic, the new funding will provide virtual programs aimed at debunking the stigma that trades are low-paying and uninteresting employment paths.

“People make their decision whether they’re going into the trades or not as early as Grade 7,” Labour Minister Monte McNaughton told The Chatham Daily News.

“Generally, the decision point is in Grade 7 or 8. That’s why we’re moving to introduce trades as early as Grade 1 because we need to get people thinking about trades, and parents and

educators thinking about the opportunities that are available to young people at a much earlier age.”Hopefully, the education system hears this message too, and realizes developing new skills isn’t isolated to classrooms. If we look back to my friend Chris, he’s built an im-pressive career as a crane operator, and makes more money than most doctors working as general practi-tioners. Now, Chris could quite literally look down on his former teachers from the seat of his crane. But I think he’s above that.

Transit City in Vaughan, Ontario has reached two major construction milestones, with two of the three 55-story condominium towers topping out.

Transit City is part of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC), a 100-acre purpose-built business district along the Toronto-York-Spadina Subway Extension.

The project — a partnership between SmartCentres and CentreCourt, with con-struction management by Mutliplex — is designed to move Vaughan from a bedroom community to a destination and business centre, by offering luxury, residential condos, restaurants, entertainment venues, shopping and retail shops along the six-stop subway extension, which connects the suburb to downtown Toronto.

Under construction since 2018, the first three 55-story condominiums are rising above the skyline adjacent to the newly opened TTC subway station, while work on towers 4 and 5 is underway.

Transit City is also part of the Master Plan for SmartCentres Place, which envisions a 9-acre development, including 929,000 square metres of residential space, 464,500 square metres of office space and 185,800 square metres of retail space.

The first two Transit City towers include 1,110 residential units and seven levels of above-ground parking. The third tower in-cludes 612 condos and six levels of parking.

To move personnel and materials through-out the 55-storeys of each of the three towers, Multiplex partnered with UCEL Inc. to devise a plan for the required construction hoists.

“We started working with Multiplex in 2014 to look at the buildings and locations to erect the hoists,” said Jason Lang, general manager at UCEL.

To meet the construction needs of Transit City, UCEL provided the Stros 3242 F9 con-struction hoist, which is capable of lifting up to 3,200 kg. With an independent car on each side of the hoist, the 3242 F9 moves personnel and materials up to 90 metres per minute.

“We have one on each of the three towers,”

said Al Fockler, UCEL’s rental manager. UCEL will begin installing a construction

hoist when a project reaches its sixth level. The initial installation takes about two weeks.

“After that, we go up every three floors as the building progresses,” Fockler said.

For Transit City, the hoist has already been removed from the first tower, with the second tower’s hoist schedule for removal in August.

“The Tower 3 hoist will be coming down before the end of the year. We probably only have three or four more jumps there and then Tower 3 will be topped out,” Fockler said.

UCEL is Canada’s first construction hoist company. Formerly Urban Construction Equipment Limited, UCEL has provided hoist solutions for residential and ICI pro-jects across Canada for more than 55 years.

With a fleet of more than 70 lifts available for rent, projects like the 55-story towers at Transit City are a standard jobsite that request the services of UCEL.

“That’s in the range of the majority of what we do, but there is a 90-plus storey project we’re gearing up for that will be in the ex-clusive company of the tallest buildings in Toronto,” Lang said.

UCEL reaches to the top ofTransit City in Vaughan

The new Cat 140 GC motor grader is designed to com-bine high performance with low owning and operating costs.

The 140 GC is equipped with Cat’s C7.1 engine, 6F/3R automatic power-shift trans-mission, which eliminates the inching pedal, and a precisely designed hydraulic system that ensures balanced per-formance in all operating situations.

The grader is also equipped with an eco operating mode and demand-fan to reduce fuel consumption. Extended maintenance intervals fur-ther reduce operating costs.

With 45 years of refinement, the 140 GC's conventional steering wheel and lever con-trols provide familiarity and ensure positive control.

The control console adjusts to the operator’s preference, and the heating and cooling system option dehumidifies and pressurizes the cab, while circulating fresh air and seal-ing out dust. Seat upgrades include mechanical or air suspension. A static seat is standard.

An optional low-profile cab provides more overhead for transportation or jobsite needs.

No-spin differentialThe 140 GC's standard no-

spin differential activates without operator input to increase traction in poor ground conditions and to protect drivetrain compon-ents from damage.

As well, the all-wheel-drive option provides added per-formance in rough terrain or poor underfoot conditions. Optional guarding protects the 140 GC from damage in demanding applications.

Optimized machine bal-ance ensures maximum drawbar power to the ground.

The standard drawbar cir-

cle moldboard provides long service life, with replaceable wear strips that maintain sys-tem integrity. Adding the 4.3 metre moldboard option offers more road coverage.

Digital Blade Slope Meter is another option, which takes the guesswork out of slope control and keeps the jobsite safer by eliminating manual grade checks.

Furthermore, the optional Cat Detect with Vision Sys-tem uses a rearview camera to show a wide view behind the machine.

A reversing fan option pre-vents material build up by the rear door intake screen and helps reduce cleaning maintenance for the motor grader’s cooling system.

O i l - b a t h , m u l t i - d i s c service brakes are hydraul-ically-actuated for smooth,

predictable braking and low er op erat ing costs. Furthermore, the circle-drive slip clutch option protects the pinion drive and circle teeth from potential damage.

The Circle Saver option reduces daily greasing re-

quirements and protects the circle and pinion, signifi-cantly reducing the potential for damage.

Optional guarding pro-te c t s t h e 1 4 0 G C f ro m damage in demanding ap-plications.

The Associated Equipment Distributors (AED) are calling on Canada’s federal gov-ernment to boost infrastructure spending.

In a recent letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, AED outlines how infrastructure spending will help boost the economy as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The letter asks Trudeau to expedite spend-ing to support the 2020 construction season, as well as consider future investments in construction.

“Investing in infrastructure is the best way for the government to stimulate the econ-omy while benefiting all Canadians,” Brian P. McGuire, president and CEO of AED said in the letter. “Nearly every economic sector and citizen gains from upgrading and con-structing roads, bridges, broadband, water systems and other projects. From retailers and farmers to restaurants and medical workers, infrastructure is the smart investment now and well into the future.”

In the letter to Trudeau, McGuire also voices AED’s support for a proposal from Public Ser-vices and Procurement Canada to stimulate the economy with a focus on delivering new federal infrastructure projects.

“AED strongly supports a prompt review

and the expedited delivery of the funds to support the construction sector during the current 2020 construction season,” McGuire said.

Supporting AED’s request is a recent Parlia-mentary Budget Officer report that outlines the government’s failure to distribute In-vesting in Canada Plan dollars in a timely manner.

However, McGuire also praises the govern-ment on its infrastructure investments to date.

“I want to commend your government’s historic investments in infrastructure through the Investing in Canada plan,” he said. “This initiative has allowed key projects across Canada to be funded, spurring economic growth and supporting the employment of thousands of Canadians.”

AED is an international trade association representing companies that sell, rent, service and manufacture construction, mining, farm, energy, forestry and industrial equipment and related supplies.

The Canadian equipment distribution industry, which is mainly small and medium-sized businesses, has more than 420 locations across the country that employ more than 27,000 workers and account for at least $8 billion in annual economic activity.

Bobcat is expanding its prod-uct offering with the intro-duction of the new MT100 mini track loader.

The new mini track loader is ideal for digging, trenching, backfilling and moving ma-terial in tight-fitting jobsites.

The machine is a reliable re-placement for manual labour and wheelbarrows in tight areas where larger equipment won’t fit.

Powered by a Tier 4 diesel engine and an efficient hy-draulic system, the new mini

track loader delivers fast cycle times, strong breakout force and excellent pushing ability, according to Bobcat.

The MT100 has a rated operating capacity of 453.5 kg and comes standard with removable counterweights, which can be mounted in the undercarriage or at the rear of the machine on the uprights, to increase lifting performance.

As well, the MT100 is equipped with a completely new, more durable under-

carriage that does not require daily maintenance.

At 91 cm wide with stan-dard narrow tracks, the MT100 mini track loader of-fers the combination of an easy-to-use machine with a less-intimidating size.

Attachment interfacesThe new mini track load-

er features the Bob-Tach attachment mounting sys-tem, which allows the use of a wide assortment of Bobcat attachments on the machine.

The Bob-Tach system uses an over-centre latch mechanism and wear-compensating pins to allow the proper attach-ment-to-carrier fitment.

The MT100 also features Bobcat’s Common Industry Interface design which offers operators the ability to ex-change attachments as jobs change.

Combining over-centre latches with pin-on design provides simple and confi-dent attachment-to-carrier connection.

MT100 track optionsThe MT100 is available with

two different track sizes to provide operators with their preferred combination of performance and comfort when travelling over estab-lished surfaces or adverse

ground conditions. The stan-dard narrow tracks keep the machine’s width to 91 cm. Depending on the size of the attachment, operators can navigate through doorways and fence gates.

A ground pressure of 5.25 psi provides good protection for most turf and finished sur-faces.

Wide track optionAs well, optional wide

tracks further reduce ground pressure and increase ma-chine stability. At 3.97 psi, operators can achieve the lightest possible footprint for sensitive surfaces – and the mini track loader is still only 104 cm wide when equipped

with the wide track option. The MT100 has a com-

pletely new, more durable undercarriage that requires no daily maintenance.

The mini track loaders’ rollers are permanently sealed and constantly bathed in oil for permanent lubrication. As well, the surfaces of rollers and idlers are heat treated to minimize the wear and tear of typical use, which extends the life of the track system.

Plus, the Bobcat MT100 allows operators to gain tool-free access to routine maintenance areas, like cool-ant, fuel, oil and hydraulic fluid levels, by simply lifting the hood.

To enhance comfort, Bob-cat equipped the MT100 mini track loader with ergonomic ISO joystick controls and en-hanced performance features, including optimized roller spacing on the track system, which improves overall ride quality.

Furthermore, an integrated ride-on platform gives oper-ators a wider view to the sides, as well as to the bucket cutting edge or attachment.

In the 1960s, Hamm launched the GRW. The pneumatic tire roller concept was revo-lutionary at that time, and Hamm has con-tinued to develop these machines up to the present day.

Now, more than 50 years later, the compaction specialists from Bavaria are launching a new generation of the roller type: the HP series.

The new series will replace the existing GRW series worldwide by the end of this year.

One platform For the HP series machines, Hamm has

developed a common platform for all mod-els in every market throughout the world.

Hamm will also continue producing the

pneumatic tire rollers in different basic version.

First, there are the HP 180 and HP 180i models with operating weights of 8 tonnes to a maximum of 18 tonnes. Second, there are the HP 280 and HP 280i models with operating weights between 10 tonnes and a maximum of 28 tonnes. Here, Hamm is providing the individual markets with models to suit the locally relevant weight classes and equipment variants.

The new HP series pneumatic tire rollers also offer a modern, spacious operator's platform or panoramic cabin with max-imum visibility over the machine and the construction site. In this respect, all models comply with the new ISO 5006-2017 oper-ator’s field of view standard which is stricter

than the previous provisions. In terms of machine design, Hamm is sticking with the proven asymmetrical frame concept in the HP series. The frame follows the track offset between the front and rear wheel sets and always allows a clear view of the outer flanks of the front and rear wheels.

Clear operating conceptOn all models, the operation is designed

to be language-neutral and easy to learn. The minimal number of switches on the operator’s platform is intelligently arranged. As well, user guidance is assisted by the unambiguous colour-coded grouping. Drive control is ergonomically positioned on the armrest via a joystick.

Another feature is the flexibility in terms

of ballasting: the operating weight is quickly adjustable to suit the asphalt type, layer thickness and application.

The HP series offers considerable latitude with its variable ballasting concept. For ex-ample, prefabricated ballast bodies made of steel or normal or heavyweight concrete can be inserted into, or removed, from the large ballast compartments between the wheel sets using a fork-lift truck, for example. This can be carried out in the user's workshop or on the construction site. Hamm offers various ballast body kits for this purpose allowing different weights to be achieved. With ballast spaces located in the centre of the machine, the weight is always evenly distributed over both axles.

Hamm’s next generation of pneumatic tire rollers

Large tank volumesThe new HP series pneumatic tire

rollers are identifiable by their large, newly designed water tank. Like the diesel tank, the water tank features ample capacity, so that the machines have sufficient capacity for a full work-ing day without stopping to refill.

Hamm also offers a supplementary water tank with a volume of 1,500 litres for all HP series models. It may be used as a water reservoir for the sprinkling system, but also serves as a flexible supplementary weight. Operation of the supplementary tank is easy as it is connected to the basic water tank by means of interconnecting pipes. To facilitate quick refilling, the developers have provided a C-pipe connection to complement conventional filling. It al-

lows the entire tank to be filled in about three minutes. A pump is also fitted to allow complete discharge.

Innovative sprinkling systemHamm has also optimized the addi-

tive sprinkler system for the new HP series due to the profusion of special asphalts that tend to be difficult to process. High-quality compaction of these materials calls for sprinkling of the pneumatic tires with an additive. Previously, the additive concentrate was mixed with water and then filled into a separate tank on the roller. On the new machines, the additive concentrate is simply filled without premixing.

The dosage from the large additive tank with level monitoring can be con-trolled from the operator's platform in various addition levels. The roller doses and mixes the additive during

the compaction in accordance with the specification. This also brings about an increase in quality, as Hamm avoids separation of the additive-water mix-ture by virtue of the design. Switching from water to additive can be done at any time directly from the operator's platform.

Safety assured maintenanceWhen it comes to maintenance,

Hamm’s engineers also paid attention to efficiency and safety. For example, all daily maintenance items are situated on the right-hand side of the engine. Engine access has also been designed with safety in mind on the HP series: the steps are integrated in the outer contour and are opened outwards in one easy operation. As they visually protrude in this position, the operator cannot forget to retract the steps.

Diversity translates to longevity for Allto Construction

Throughout its more than five decades in business, Allto Construction’s ability to operate as a family busi-ness, where everyone wears multiple hats, has been key to its success.

No project is too big or too small for the Orangeville, Ontario-based contractor.

Allto jobsites range from digging a small pad for a shed’s foundation, to septic tank repair, to the earthworks for a large-scale warehouse.

“It’s really a variety. It’s not really one thing. It’s not like we’re always on big sites. We’re everywhere in all different ways,” said Nick Ac-chione, operations manager for Allto. “Every day, things are changing.”

The larger contract jobs account for about 40 per cent of Allto’s work, while sewer and septic tank job-sites make up about 20 per cent of the workload. Outside of earthmoving, Allto oper-ates a concrete and asphalt recycling yard, offers topsoil screening and equipment rentals, and takes on snow re-moval contracts in the winter.

“We probably have 10 or 12 machines out with plows pushing snow. We do quite a bit of snow removal for the school board,” Acchione said.

50th anniversaryLast year, Allto celebrated

its 50th anniversary, and the company attributes part of its success to its ability to tackle a diverse workload.

Allto Construction was cre-ated in November of 1969 by Nick’s uncle Larry Acchione.

“He always said he clear-ly had no clue, because who starts a construction company in November?” Acchione said with a laugh.

Equipped with a Case 580 backhoe, Larry Acchione started the company by tak-

ing jobs digging basements and utility lines. Today, the company has grown to em-ploy about 45 people.

“He can remember the day he could afford to put a cab on his backhoe. He was so excited. He didn’t have to get rained on all day long,” Acchione said.

Now, 51 years later, Larry Acchione is still on the job, and his willingness to still get his hands dirty serves as motivation for the staff. Acchione explained he uses his uncle as an example to new hires who may not want to leave their cab.

“The owner of the com-pany will go out and take lids off of septic tanks to fig-ure out what’s going on, so we can schedule a repair,” Acchione said. “You can be darn sure you have to pick up a broom or a shovel or a grease gun. Your job doesn’t stop at sitting in the seat of an excavator.”

Like its jobsites, a versatile and diverse workforce is key for Allto Construction.

“I think it keeps you sharp-er than if you’re always just the dump truck man or always the loader man,” Ac-chione said.

He added that Allto’s di-verse skill sets enables their ability to tackle multiple types of jobs.

“I’m always impressed by these guys. Whether we’re doing a water main connec-tion or dropping in a septic tank, our guys are very di-verse in what they’re capable of,” Acchione said. “They can be in an excavator today and a loader tomorrow. A lot of them can then hop on the dump truck or the float.

Close to homeBy maintaining a wide

scope of work and a talent-ed workforce, Allto is able to

maintain a steady workload within south central Ontario. Eliminating a lengthy com-mute, helps provide a better quality of life for Allto’s staff.

“If all we did was the big commercial stuff we’d have to travel sometimes,” Ac-chione said.

“That means people are staying in hotels Monday to Friday, and only get to go home on the weekends, if they’re lucky.”

Acchione believes that quality of life is why many of Allto’s employees stay with the company through-out their career. Some of the workforce has been with Allto for as long as 40 years.

“They can get home at night and can actually have dinner with their family and be there to raise their kids,” he said. “That’s one of the big pluses here.”

Fleet additions Allto has about 55 ma-

chines in its fleet, including earthmoving equipment, triaxles as well as vacuum and pump trucks.

In late 2019, Allto pur-chased a Caterpillar 320 excavator equipped with GRADE with 2D.

“We’re trying to move more towards machines with technology,” Acchione said.

“When we get to a site, our guy can hop in the machine, set up his laser and get dig-ging. He doesn’t need a guy there with a grade rod, which is an expense to the company and a potential liability.”

He noted the adaption of technologies does come with some of the clichés attrib-uted to younger employees adapting more quickly to new methods. However, con-struction veterans are willing to learn new skill sets too.

“They like it, they want to learn it and understand it,” he

said. “It’s not like it’s just the young guys that are adapting to it.”

Recently, Allto also pur-chased a Cat 310 mini excavator to tackle sewer and water main repairs. The 10 tonne machine fills a gap between 5-tonne and 16-tonne machines in Allto’s excavator fleet.

“ Th e ma c h i n e i s b ig enough to dig a big hole, but we can still fit it in some of these smaller front yards or under trees,” Acchione said. “It’s smaller, but can still easily load a triaxle.”

Although their recent

additions are both Caterpil-lar, Acchione said the fleet includes machines from sev-eral manufacturers.

“I think all the machines, for myself, are pretty darn good these days. They’re running 5,000, 6,000 7,000-plus hours without any major component replacement,” he said. “You can take them even beyond that. The reli-ability now is unreal.”

If a machine does break down, Allto has its own shop, heavy equipment technician and service truck to help re-duce downtime.

“If something goes wrong,

it’s not too often we can’t get it back up and running, or get another machine on the float, get it on site and go back to work,” Acchione said.

Having its own float truck is another advantage, and it allows Allto to respond to emergency situations 24/7.

“We’ve sent out our 35-tonne excavator in the middle of the night to help the fire department,” Ac-chione said.

“I don’t think there’s too many contractors that can have an excavator on a float and on its way to a site within an hour.”

The Alberta-based Eagle Builders are cele-brating their 20th anniversary with a new mobile crane from Liebherr.

Created in 2000, Eagle Builders special-izes in the design, engineering, fabrication and building of precast concrete structures.

Quickline Crane, a subsidiary of Eagle Builders, serves the heavy lift requirements for the parent company. As the company’s project requirements are getting more complex and higher load capacities are required, the company has purchased a Liebherr mobile crane LTM 1250-5.1. The 250 tonne crane fully meets the demands of Eagle Builders.

“We looked at the market projection and what we had coming up for projects and decided now was a good time to purchase a larger crane,” said Craig Haan, director of Quickline Crane and Eagle Builders. “We looked at many options, but ultimately decided that a 300-tonne mobile crane was the right choice. From both a lifting capacity and mobility within seasonal road bans, this crane checked off the re-quirements.”

The new LTM 1250-5.1 is the largest crane in the Quickline Crane fleet and will be utilized on major Eagle Builders projects.

The five-axle mobile crane has a 60-metre telescopic boom, a maximum hoist height of 108 metres and a maximum radius of 96 metres.

VarioBallast enables the crane to deliver maximum load capacities with a large ballast radius, making it perfect for use on constricted sites with a small ballast radius. It enables each outrigger to be extended to a different length. This enhances safety –

particularly in constricted spaces. The LTM 1250-5.1 is also equipped with

ECOdrive, which makes the crane more comfortable and quieter by reducing en-gine speed. Faster gear shifting delivers greater dynamic and traction when trav-elling off-road. On the road, the torque from the Liebherr diesel engine is used to reduce fuel consumption.

Furthermore, the crane’s ECOmode minimizes fuel consumption and noise emissions when operating the crane super-structure.

Based in Blackfalds, Alberta, Eagle Builders have seen tremendous growth throughout the company’s 20 years in business. Internationally recognized for their quality, Eagle Builders is the industry trendsetter for fostering innovation and emerging technologies.

With a diverse portfolio in both the public and private markets, stakeholders procure Eagle Builders for precast developments that require proper technical expertise, stability and resources ensuring the highest success with lasting value.

As Eagle Builders turns 20, they take pride in the quality of service the company delivers on projects.

“We stand behind every project through-out its lifecycle so we expect the same from our suppliers, trades or service companies. Therefore, service of equipment is of the utmost importance and not taken lightly,” Haan said.

Eagle Builders employs 273 personnel with four dedicated staff members for Quickline Crane, now operating two Lieb-herr Cranes in its growing fleet.

GOING UP?

R&D Crane has expanded their already extensive fleet with the purchase of a new Grove GMK5250L.

Based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, R&D Crane, a division of the Cherubini Group of Companies, has provided crane services to a broad range of industries, including construction, commercial, marine, wind and residential for more than three decades.

The addition of the new 250 tonne Grove GMK5250L all-terrain crane was fuelled by increased demand in the market, especially in R&D Crane’s primary fields of focus, which includes bridge

and structural erection, tilt-up building panel erection and industrial mechanical machinery installation.

The GMK5250L’s inaugural job was erecting the William Trail Bridge in Waverly, Nova Scotia. The crane is designed with a 70 metre Megaform main boom manufactured with the Twin-Lock boom pinning system, ensuring the boom is among the most stable on the market.

The machine’s dimen-sions allow for excellent roadability, while providing a stronger reach and load chart than many fixed-axle cranes in its class. Other new advancements include

Manitowoc’s user-friendly Crane Control System (CCS) and the VIAB Turbo clutch module, which was designed to improve fuel economy and increase manoeuvrability.

The GMK5250L isn’t the first Grove crane in R&D Crane’s fleet. The company has purchased various Grove cranes including a Grove G M K 6 4 0 0 , T M S 9 0 0 0 E , TMS9000-2 and GRT880. The most recent addition, the brand new GMK5250L all-terrain crane, offers groundbreaking technolo-gies and was designed with advancements focusing on enhancing jobsite versatility, lowering operating costs and

increasing return on invest-ment.

“Due to increased demand in the market, coupled with many upcoming bridge erection jobs, the new GM-K5250L was an essential purchase to continue with the work that we do,” said Aaron Harvey, general man-ager of R&D Crane.

“The decision to purchase the Grove GMK5250L comes down to our comfort with the Grove/Manitowoc product lines, our 25 year relationship with Shawmut Equipment and their professional team of technicians that provide the customer service and support we need.”

Shawmut Equipment was instrumental in helping R&D Crane navigate Grove’s all-terrain range of options, leading the crane operator to the GMK5250L, as it pre-cisely fits the company’s capacity and ease-of-trans-port needs.

“When R&D Crane was looking to upgrade their Grove GMK5240, the Grove GMK5250L was a clear choice. With a 230 foot main boom, ease of trans-

port, and latest technology, the machine is a perfect fit for them,” said Dave Haw-boldt, sales representative of Shawmut Equipment of Canada.

“Shawmut continues to enjoy a prosperous rela-tionship with the Cherubini Group and R&D Crane. We are pleased to continue to support the company with OEM parts, factory-trained technicians and any other future equipment needs.”

Deere & Company has created a Smart Industrial operating model in order to accelerate its success in the integration of smart technology with its legacy of manufacturing.

The new Deere Smart Industrial strategy was cre-ated to unlock new value for customers, while simultan-eously “revolutionizing” the agriculture and construc-tion industries through the rapid introduction of new technologies.

Under the new model, Deere plans to focus its actions on production sys-tems, technology stack and lifecycle solutions.

"As Deere businesses and those of its customers become more competitive and dynamic, Deere's track record of technological in-novation puts it in a position to anticipate, respond and outpace those dynamics by offering cutting-edge solu-tions to enhance customers' productivity, profitability and sustainability," said John May, Deere’s chairman and chief executive officer. "The new operating model represents a leap forward in performance for the com-pany from an already strong starting point."

ally align products and solutions around its pro-duction systems roadmaps, which capitalizes on its knowledge of its customers and how they work.

The new production sys-tems structure enables the company to drive an inte-grated product roadmap and related investments that span all aspects of a customer's jobs and to more fully meet customer needs.

Technology stack Deere plans to make in-

vestments in technology,

as well as research and de-velopment, which deliver intelligent solutions to its customers through an intui-tive technology stack made up of hardware, embedded software, connectivity, data platforms and applications.

system also includes enter-prise integration of Deere's aftermarket and support capabilities to more effect-ively manage customer equipment, service and technology needs across the

full lifetime of a John Deere product. This includes a specific lifecycle solution focus on the ownership ex-perience.

R&D To achieve the smart in-

dustrial vision, Deere will adopt a more disciplined approach to capital alloca-tion by devoting research and investment dollars to the most promising and profitable opportunities.

As well, Deere plans to accelerate the speed with which the company brings priority technology to mar-ket to drive value creation and capture it more quickly.

"The new operating model will help us respond to changing market conditions with greater speed and effi-ciency," May said.

Tigercat updates its 718 feller buncher to include Tier 4 Final engine

Tigercat engineers have completed the company’s drive-to-tree feller buncher lineup with the release of the G-Series 718.

As one of the manufac-turer’s last machines to receive a Tigercat FPT Tier 4 Final engine, the 718G was a challenge to package the additional after treatment required for Tier 4 com-pliance, while retaining its nimble size.

However, the designers have succeeded, incorpor-ating all of the features of the larger G-series family members, as well as addi-t i o n a l e n h a n c e m e n t s , w h i l e ma i nt a i n i ng t h e approximate size of the previous E-series 718.

The 718G gets its power from the Tigercat FPT N45

Tier 4 Final engine, which delivers 170 hp at 2,200 rpm.

Compartmentalized layout

Ti g e r c a t c o m p l e t e l y redesigned the engine com-partment, allowing for a high capacity cross-flow cooling setup with a hy-draulic driven, automatic variable speed fan and an automatic reversing cycle.

The 718G ‘s new compart-mentalized layout keeps the cooling system, hydraulic components and engine in three separate areas.

The new accumulation mode al lows the fel ler buncher operator to se-lect between normal and auto-accumulate for bunch-ing head arm operation. Simultaneous open and

close of the clamp and ac-cumulator arms can also be programmed on a joy-stick button. As well, a saw interrupt trigger on the joy-stick turns off saw power temporarily when extra horsepower is required. This feature is useful on hilly terrain, once the saw head is full and the operator is backing up to dump the accumulated bunch.

G-Series cabThe G-series cab is quiet,

well-equipped and deliv-ers excellent visibility. LED lights improve reliability and brightness, while a more even light pattern provides better coverage around the machine.

The front window area is nearly 10 per cent larger.

Combined with Tigercat’s low-profile boom structure, visibility to the front is un-matched. The rear quarter windows are more than 20 per cent larger, which im-

proves the view over the back tires – an asset in thin-ning applications.

Additional new features include a rear camera sys-tem, programmable joystick

buttons, electric hydraulic fill pump and ground-level fuelling. Enhanced differen-tial lock controls are timed to turn off after a pre-set duration to save axle wear.

Construction is up and running in Ontario. However, the province’s ICI contractors are facing chal-lenges with supply chains, increased costs, lower rev-enues and concerns about a second wave of COVID-19, according to a new survey.

The Ontario Construc-t ion S e cretar iat (O C S) recently released its third Coronavirus Contractors Survey. Between June 16 and June 19, the OCS led a Contractor’s Survey of 200 ICI (Industrial, Commercial and Institutional) contract-ors from across Ontario.

The ICI survey was creat-ed to provide insight on how the construction industry is adapting to new safety guidelines related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Top concernThe Coronavirus Con-

tractor Survey found that the top concern of ICI con-tractors is a possible second wave of COVID-19, followed by the continued unease in ensuring the health and safety of their workers.

Between Survey 2 (May 11 to 15) and Survey 3, there has been a significant in-crease in concern with the ability to obtain skilled labour and supply chain disruptions.

As well, little improve-ment has been found in supply chain issues caused by the coronavirus since the first survey in the series (April 22 to 29), with close

to two-thirds of contractors still reporting a medium to high impact.

ICI contractors report that on average, 28 per cent of their activity was halted and 5 per cent of con-tractors reported all their construction activities were still fully stopped.

Work delaysThe survey also found

that delays are ongoing, with 41 per cent of work scheduled to start this year is still delayed.

As well, one third of con-tractors are experiencing significant delays in the pro-cessing of building permits.

In regard to procure-ment trends, contractors are starting to bid on more work, with 53 per cent now doing the same amount or more bidding than usual, compared to 38 per cent at the time of the previous survey.

It has been observed by 88 per cent of contractors that owners are now includ-ing new health and safety requirements on projects.

With relevance to work-site trends, 93 per cent of ICI contractors believe they are meeting enhanced sanita-tion standards on their sites and 42 per cent of contract-ors consider the morale of their workers to have im-proved for that reason.

Enhanced sanitation Furthermore, 68 per cent

of contractors want en-hanced sanitation practices

to continue permanently on their jobsites, while more than half (52 per cent) of contractors have observed an increase in government enforcement of health and safety standards.

The constr uction in-dustry took a significant blow financially as a result of the pandemic. Nearly three-quarters (73 per cent) of firms expect less revenue in 2020, this is unchanged

compared to the previous surveys. The depth of their expected revenue decline has seen little improvement, with contractors now fore-casting a 23 per cent drop on average, compared to a 26 per cent fall forecasted in the previous survey.

ICI contractors expect that project costs will in-crease by 13 per cent due to the new PPE and physical distancing requirements.

Ontario ICI contractors adapt to “the new normal”

Danny and Baska Legault own a 100 acre hobby farm in Asphodel-Norwood, Ontario. Thirty-five acres are cultivated, and their neighbour farm these fields; the rest includes forests and a large pond. Danny saw that most of his neighbours, who didn’t actually farm themselves, generally owned tractors and decided he wanted one too, so he started to do his research.

He thought of the many uses he would need a machine for, such as for chipping, snow removal, post-hole digging, clearing land, creating moun-tain biking and ski trails, grading, pool installation, hauling, loading, and major landscaping, opposed to your normal open-field farming.

This led them to purchase a Bobcat® machine. “When we buy, we only buy high quality. Bobcat has brand recognition,” stated Danny. He then called up Bobcat of Peterborough. Ryan Dibello, sales specialist for Bobcat of Peterborough spoke with Danny and knew he would be interested in the Bobcat T450 compact track loader but didn’t have one in stock at the time. They were going to try another model out, but Ryan located one in Quebec and immediately had it shipped to the Peterborough branch. “They do smart business there,” stated Danny. “Ryan suggested we rent out the T450 compact track loader and try it out. So, I did, fell in love with it and didn’t return it. Ryan even came by with forks and in the barn showed me that I could lift a cement block that was embed-

ded in the ground. He showed me how to grade and gave me confidence to operate this on my own. Ryan has been fantastic, straight forward, helpful, and the dealership is nearby. It has been an all-around pleasant experience. I want to be a good client to someone, but I expect pleasant service and great advice back, and I got that.”

Danny explained the five reasons they chose the Bobcat T450 compact track loader. “1. The tracks work great in all types of weather year round and doesn’t harm grass around your residence. 2. Their compact size allows them to fit in our wooded trails. 3. The variety and quality of attachments they offer are incomparable - 80 of them! I will buy the 4 or 5 I use most, and for other projects, the fact that I can rent them as needed is huge. 4. All of the Bobcat attachments are quick to attach

to the machine which makes it so easy, you don’t have to spend much time at all switching them up from one to another when necessary. 5. The visibility. You can see what you are doing, as the attachments are on the front. Another brand in particular, I’d have a sore neck by the end of the day.”

“So, you can see, for us, the capability of using the Bobcat T450 compact track loader is about 400% better than using a farm tractor. We love our land and we both look forward to doing many projects with our Daisy.” Danny named his T450 Daisy, after Dolly Parton, who is a strong woman, and a pure country girl.

Thanks Danny and Baska.

Gradall Industries has introduced a Storm Recovery Series collection of excavators that are designed to help municipalities and contractors tackle the aftermath of weather disasters.

Gradall excavators can be driven on high-ways at 100 km per hour, without the need for a lowboy trailer. The speed of the machines allows them to get to disaster sites quickly and remove fallen trees and debris to create access for other emergency vehicles.

“The summer and fall of 2020 is predicted to be a busier-than-normal hurricane sea-son, from the Gulf Coast, around Florida, and continuing up into New England,” said Mike Popovich, Gradall vice president of excavator products. “We are working closely with our distributor network, especially in these areas, to make these Storm Recovery Series machines readily available to help first responders access and clean up disaster areas very quickly.”

On a disaster site, and during the recovery process, the excavators can be equipped with a wide range of useful attachments including fixed-thumb grapples, tree limb

shears, boom extensions and buckets, which enables them to collect and load tree limbs and trunks, rocks, household debris and building materials into trucks, as well as open drainage ditches and waterways.

Gradall models with highway speed under-carriages include the XL 3100V at 18,565 kg with a 8.3 metre boom reach; XL 4100V at 22,536 kg with a 9.2 metre boom reach; and XL 5100V at 26,158 kg with a 10.3 metre boom reach.

Gradall’s highway speed machine collec-tion also includes Discovery Series models, developed in collaboration with Freightliner.

As the industry’s first crossover excavator, with a Gradall upper structure integrated into a Freightliner truck chassis, Discovery Series models are designed for municipalities. The series features two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models that weigh from 14,605 kg to 15,649 kg and have a boom reach up to 7.6 metres.

All Gradall machines are equipped with a telescoping, fully tilting boom, enabling operators to correctly position attachments for faster debris removal. The low working

profile boom design enables Gradalls to work under bridges and tree limbs, reaching into

piles of debris and handling work that con-ventional knuckle boom excavators cannot.

JCB’s 19C-1E electric mini excavator is being hon-oured with one of the world’s most prestigious prizes for engineering innovation.

The United Kingdom’s Royal Academy of Engin-eering announced that JCB’s electric mini excavator has won the 2020 MacRobert Award.

The award is a prize for innovation that has been presented since 1969.

The innovation award has honoured a wide variety of engineering feats through-out its history, including the CT scanner and Rolls-Royce’s Pegasus engine used in the Harrier jump jet.

“To win one of the world’s most respected engineer-ing prizes is an outstanding

endorsement for JCB’s elec-trification team, who have achieved so much in ap-plying a science which was new to our business,” said JCB Chairman Lord Bam-ford. “JCB’s electric mini excavator will contribute to a zero-carbon future and it’s a huge honour for our con-tribution to be recognized in this way.”

Alongside JCB’s electric mini excavator, the award’s s h o r t l i s t i n c l u d e d t h e all-electric I-PACE sports utility vehicle from Jaguar Land Rover and ecoSMRT liquid natural gas reliquifi-cation technology from Babcock’s LGE business.

“JCB’s electric digger i s a h u g e e n g i n e e r i n g achievement. The team has developed all parts of the

electric propulsion system to deliver system perform-ance that matches real customer requirements,” said professor Sir Richard Friend, chair of the Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award judg-ing panel. “This is a huge achievement in itself, but

the additional benefits of zero exhaust emissions and much lower noise has lifted the 19C-1E excavator to a new level.”

The 19C-1E electric mini excavator is the world’s first volume-produced fully elec-tric mini excavator.

Through electric innov-ation, JCB has shown it is possible to make powerful

construction machinery without an internal com-bustion engine.

So far, JCB has sold hun-dreds of the machines, w h i c h h av e s av e d t h e equivalent of 33,290 pounds in carbon dioxide emissions across 5,616 hours of work.

As well as significantly reducing carbon emissions, the electric mini excavator

has zero exhaust emissions and very low noise levels.

This combination makes it better suited than tradition-al construction equipment for operating inside build-ings or in areas where noise must be kept to a minimum, for example near hospitals and schools and in cities where night shift work is often necessary.

The Brandt Group of Com-panies has completed sev-eral recently-announced acquisitions.

Effective July 10, Brandt has successfully acquired the assets of GeoShack Canada Company and the Canadian assets of INTEQ Distributors.

The acquisition, which relates to the Ontario and Quebec markets, makes Brandt the exclusive deal-er for Topcon Positioning Systems and other com-p l i m e n t a r y t o o l s a n d

technology for the entire Canadian market.

"We've worked hard to make this a great deal for our survey, engineering and construction customers in Ontario and Quebec," said Brandt CEO Shaun Semple. "Our national infrastructure will allow us to build on the strong foundation laid down by the GeoShack and INTEQ teams to deliver greater-than-ever access to equipment and support services."

New tech division The GeoShack and INTEQ

brands and operations will be transitioned into the company's nation-wide Brandt Positioning Tech-nology division.

Furthermore, a recent agreement with Topcon Positioning Systems has assigned Brandt distribu-tion rights for the Quebec market, making the com-pany the exclusive dealer for Topcon construction and geopositioning products for all of Canada.

Brandt's 56 locations Canada-wide, paired with GeoShack's strategic loca-tions in Ontario will position Brandt to provide an un-matched degree of aftersales support.

In combinat ion w ith Brandt's pre-existing Top-con footprint in Western and Atlantic Canada, the additions have given Brandt a comprehensive retail footprint to supply geopo-sitioning equipment to the entire Canadian market. The agreement further estab-lishes the firm's position as

one of the country's premier privately held companies.

Sokkia Acquisition T h e a n n o u n c e m e n t

follows Brandt's recent ac-quisition of Sokkia Canada and is the latest in a series of acquisitions and dealer agreements by the Regina, SK-based company since their purchase of Nortrax in late 2019.

The Sokkia Canada ac-quisition was completed on July 2. The acquisition makes Brandt the exclusive dealer for Sokkia optical survey in-struments, accessories and parts for the entire Canadian market.

"Expanding our Sokkia offering into Ontario and Quebec has been a high priority for Brandt," Sem-ple said.

"Central Canada is an important new market for us and we are 100 per cent committed to delivering exceptional value for the survey, engineering and construction industry here. This addition is a big step forward for us."

The Sokkia product lineup will be distributed and sup-ported through the Brandt Positioning Technology division and includes total stations, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers, data collectors, digital levels and a full com-plement of field accessories.

The move will consoli-date Sokkia distribution for the first time under one banner and will further es-tablish Brandt's position as a premier privately-held Canadian company.

AGGREGATE/QUARRY

Allu, the manufacturer of the Transformer and Processor material handling attach-ments, is expanding its portfolio with a new lineup of crusher attachments for excav-ators.

The new heavy-duty range of Allu crushing attachments is purpose-designed to meet the requirements of the quarry, recycling and demolition industries.

At first, the global launch of the new Allu crusher series will see the introduction of three crusher models for excavators in the 10 to 33 ton range. All three models are designed to deliver ease of use, as well as optimize performance, while providing easy maintenance in the field.

“By bringing this new product line to market we will be able to provide customers with what they have been looking for,” said Jeroen Hinnen, vice president of sales for Allu Group. “The Allu Transformer range offers unique productivity and efficiency benefits on soft rock and other materials, whilst the Allu Crusher range enables hard rock, and often troublesome demolition materials, to be effectively reduced.”

Reversible crushingThe new attachment series also features

reversible crushing. This reduces the poten-tial for jamming, blockages or obstruction when rebar is present, while delivering higher levels of production and reducing the need for any manual involvement in the crushing process.

As well, the feed plate design is built into the jaw, which ensures the feeding function in a fully-loaded chamber delivers high rates of production with minimal risk of bridging.

The crushers are also designed to open like a clam. This reduces maintenance time, as it allows quick replacement of wear parts, thanks to ease of access, while minimizing risk to operators and maximizing productive crushing.

For output size regulation, Allu built the crushers with a simple mechanical pin.

According to the company, the pin makes the entire crushing process easy and safe with quick adjustment for various output specifications.

“We look forward to seeing this truly cus-tomer focused solution reach the market, which will further help quarrying and demo-lition professionals transform their business,” Hinnen said. “The product will complement the Allu offering and expand the customer base for the company.”

One-stop shopAlongside the introduction of the crusher

series, Allu has also made advancements in its existing Transformer and Processor lines.

With the motto ‘transforming the way you work,’ Allu is focusing on presenting a one-stop-shop process enabling the screening, crushing, aerating, mixing and loading, all in a one-step operation.

Available in sizes to suit excavators and loaders from 8 tons to 160 tons, the Trans-formers facilitate the re-use of material on site, meaning there is no need to purchase virgin material, due to the recycling and utilization of left over materials and the generation of an income from it.

As well, all Allu equipment is focused on helping businesses reduce emissions. This is achieved as less material is transported to the jobsite, meaning a reduction in fuel consumption, less material to landfill and the greater efficient utilization of waste materials leading to the support of sustainability.

This is accomplished as Allu helps trans-form any carrier — excavator, wheel loader or skid steer — into a multi-functional tool that will screen, crush, mix, aerate, pulverize and load all in a one-step operation.

TS bladesAll Allu Transformer’s will be equipped

with the patented TS blade structure. The TS blades are developed for the screening and crushing market, with Allu expecting to deliver new levels of efficiency and produc-

tivity with the new blade variations. The new blade structure will further enable

customers to utilize their Allu Transformer in more than one way. The TS drums are available with two different blade types: standard blades for screening applications and axe blades when a crushing or shredding effect is required.

Blade sizes are available in 16 to 32 mm, 25 to 50 mm and 35 mm. The latest Allu development to the TS assembly enables three different fragment sizes from the same unit. Fragment size estimation is based on screening comb distance, which is easily changed from one screening job to another, providing more versatile processing. Due to the self-cleaning design of the TS, it allows ideal capacity even with wet materials.

Allu mobile appFor use with the Transformers, Allu has

also introduced the latest version of the Allu mobile application, which provides an intelligent digital solution for customers and operators to obtain accurate and timely information regarding safe operations at jobsites. Using internet of things (IoT) tech-nology, the Allu App provides information about the working hours and the right angle of inclination used by the Allu Transformer.

In order to maintain maximum productiv-ity on the site and to minimize equipment downtime, the Allu App provides information about the ideal maintenance frequency and the changing of wear parts, based on the working hours.

Furthermore, The Allu App provides in-structions to guide the operator through safe working methods when using the Allu attachment throughout the whole operating and ownership process.

Pictured here in 1973 is a Wabco Haulpak 85-C haul truck at work in Temagami, Northern Ontario.

The Sherman Iron Ore Mine was in full swing, having opened in 1968 to produce iron ore pellets primarily destined for use at the Dofasco Steel Plant in Hamilton, Ontario.

A fleet of five 85C's plus an additional 10 Wabco 65-ton haul units were required to annually produce the 1 million tonnes of pelletized iron ore. Given that the crude ore at this quarry contained 25 per cent iron, some 5 million tonnes of waste rock had to be hauled as well.

This 85-C seen here is dumping crude ore into a gyratory crusher that reduced the ore to minus 300 mm to feed into the processing and concentrator plant. Daily rail shipments of the iron ore pellets consisted of 30 rail cars each carrying 82 tonnes bound for Hamilton.

By the time it closed in 1990 the Sherman Mine had produced more than 20 million tonnes of concentrated iron ore.

In the mid-1950s, Wabco (Westinghouse Air Brake Company) had purchased the R.G. LeTourneau construction equipment lines and soon after were producing large rear dump quarry trucks. To handle the 81 tonne load, required either a Cummins or Detroit Diesel powerplant in the 560 kW range. Some smaller Wabco haul units were built in the former J.D. Adams plant in Paris, Ontario until it closed in the 1970s.

Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 situ-ation HCEA Canada's annual 'Last Blast' event, scheduled for Oct. 17, at the Simcoe County Museum has been cancelled. We look forward to seeing you at our future events.

HCEA Canada is a proud Community Partner of the Simcoe County Museum.

GravelHUB, a Saskatch-ewan-based tech startup, has launched the new website GravelHUB.ca, a digital hub and marketplace designed to connect aggregate buyers, sellers and industry partners.

The web-based platform aims to fills a gap in the in-dustry.

"Aggregate can often be challenging to source and we've created a user-friend-ly digital solution that is designed to open up the mar-ket considerably," said Tyler Knock, founder and CEO of GravelHUB.

Through the use of an interactive map, the platform simplifies and streamlines the purchasing process, ensur-ing companies, governments and communities can source product quickly and competi-tively, while allowing sellers to target customers and in-crease their marketing reach, resulting in greater economic development and reduced environmental impact.

Wa y n e M o r s k y , p a s t c h a i r m a n o f t h e C a n -a d i a n C o n s t r u c t i o n

Association explains the technology is transformative on several levels, including environmentally.

"GravelHUB.ca offers a sustainable way of managing a non-renewable resource,” Morsky said. “You could be trucking product in from quite a distance away and driving right past another source. When aggregates are moved in an efficient manner, greenhouse gases are reduced."

From an economic per-spective, the launch comes at an important time for global economies.

"The aggregate indus-try plays a critical role in economic recovery. Infra-structure investment is one of the fastest ways to create jobs and jumpstart the economy," said GravelHUB CFO Connor Regier.

Aggregates are the essen-tial raw materials utilized in almost every infrastructure.

In Canada, the mining, quarrying, oil and gas and construction industries are the third and the fourth

largest contributors to the country's Gross Domestic Product, contributing $280 billion in March of 2020 alone. In 2017, Ontario’s aggregate industry, the largest in the country, generated $1.6 bil-lion in production revenue and supported more than 28,000 jobs in aggregate-re-lated sectors.

The Global Aggregates In-formation Network indicates global demand for aggregate is set to increase, estimating that global consumption will rise from 40 billion tonnes to close to 55 billion tonnes by 2030, fuelled by the steady growth of infrastructure pro-jects around the globe.

"The global market for grav-el is US$500 billion annually, second only to oil among trading commodities," said Dennis Wilson, chief strategy officer for GravelHUB, noting that global infrastructure in-vestment is expected to hit US$49 trillion by 2030.

GravelHUB.ca launched throughout North America and plans to launch globally in the future.

Superior Industries has developed a stan-dard new set of TeleStacker Conveyor models with onboard power.

The self-contained, radial, telescoping conveyors are equipped with a 96 kW Cat 4.4 Tier 4 Final engine.

The conveyors were developed for remote quarrying and mining sites, where access to permanent electrical power transmission is not practical.

The self-contained TeleStacker Conveyors are designed in 914 mm belt widths and fully-extended operating lengths of 34, 40 and 46 metres.

As well, the Superior Industries engineer-ing team will collaborate with bulk handlers requiring custom widths and lengths.

Other standard features include XTP swing axles, hydraulic drives for the main and stinger conveyors, Superior brand idlers and pulleys, as well as an onboard counterweight.

Furthermore, the manufacturer offers dozens of options to match the TeleStacker Conveyor to its environment.

Since Superior Industries produced the first highly mobile, road-portable TeleStacker Conveyor in 1997, the company has con-tinually taken telescoping radial stacking

technology to next-level effectiveness. In countless applications worldwide, TeleStack-er Conveyors deliver cost-efficient material handling solutions that boost stockpile volumes and loading capacities, while pre-venting material segregation and additional material handling, plus eliminating costly loader and haul truck use.

The X900 is the latest addi-tion to CDE’s range of Combo all-in-one wet pro-cessing and water manage-ment solutions.

With an increased cap-acity of 500 ton per hour (tph), the new Combo X900 is the largest in the series to date.

As well, the new Combo has been specifically en-gine ere d for mater ials processors in North America and Latin America.

“With our new Combo X900, we’ve doubled its capacity and created a next-gen solution for materials processors across North America and Latin America,” said Kevin Vallelly, Director of Engineering at CDE.

“The Combo X900 can process 500 tons per hour of feed material, including natural sand and crushed rock, containing unwanted clay, silt and other organ-ic contaminants to extract quality in-spec washed and graded sand products that are market-ready straight from the belts.”

Alongside its increased capacity, the control cabin of the new Combo X900 has been repositioned to sit on top of the water tank, a design decision Vallelly explained is directly influ-enced by the North and Latin American markets.

“In these regions, plant and machinery are subject to major temperature ex-tremes and fluctuations,” he said.

“By positioning the con-trol cabin on top of the water tank, we’re able to better protect the oper-ational heart of the plant and offer a solution that can be adopted throughout both North America and Latin America where high and low temperature extremes are recorded.”

Combo AquaCycleWhile traditional washing

systems typically have a sep-arate standalone water tank, the new Combo X900 has in-tegrated this into the design of the AquaCycle thickener tank resulting in a peripheral wall for water storage, which has significantly reduced the overall footprint.

T h e d e s i g n p rov i d e s customers with near total in-dependence of water supply and minimizes the require-ments for site engineering, due to its significantly small-er footprint which is, on average, 30 per cent smaller than other traditional wash plant setups.

“ Traditional washing systems would typically con-sume up to 15 times more water than that required for the Combo X900,” Vallelly said.

“Our best-in-class water management and on-board water recycling minimizes costly water consumption and ensures up to 90 per cent of process water is recycled for immediate recirculation through the closed-circuit system.”

With a single chassis design, the Combo X900

incorporates all process-es – washing, dewatering, water recycling and stock-piling – onto one single, interconnected and pre-as-sembled unit.

“The Combo X900 en-ables materials processors to wash more than 500 tph with only 800 gallons per minute, about the same amount of water that would be required to wash a truck,” Vallelly added.

A plug-and-play system, the X900 arrives on site pre-wired and pre-tested, ready to process material within just five days as a standalone plant or as part of a larger turnkey solution.

By 2050, it’s anticipated that nearly two-thirds of the world’s population will live in urban areas. With this comes increasing demand on sand – which accounts for about 35 per cent of the concrete mix – to support construction and infra-structure.

“ T h e u r b a n i z a t i o n challenge requires a techno-logical and sustainable solution,” Vallelly said. “In North America, demand for sand and gravel is over 1.1 billion tons, including the 980 million tons in the US and 173 million tons in Canada. In South Amer-ica, including Mexico, the value of imported sand is estimated to be over US$86.1 million.”

The Combo X900 offers a solution to the challenge of growing urbanization in North America and Latin America.

The single chassis design means the Combo X900 is portable and can be rapidly deployed or relocated to re-mote locations with minimal foundations and pipework. Coupled with its small foot-print, the Combo X900 is also ideal for compact quar-ries in urban settings.

“The Combo X900 maxi-mizes resource yield from natural sand and crushed rock feed, adding huge commercial value and mini-mizing waste, and it ensures not one grain of value is lost to settling ponds,” Vallelly said.

“We’re supporting our customers to extend the life of their quarries through more efficient and sus-tainable technologies by extracting value in the form of manufactured sand from what was previously categor-ized as a ‘waste’ by-product, by ensuring maximum prod-uct yield from resources, and by boosting profitability through highly efficient pro-cesses.”

Sandvik has introduced its new Peak Screening — an innovative screening solution designed to help customers reach full produc-tivity potential.

Peak Screening is a com-plete package concept designed to ensure every square metre of a customer’s screening is as productive as it can be for their unique operation.

According to Sandvik, most screening operations are ca-pable of more. Often much more. Peak Screening is the manufacturer’s term for a complete screening solution, including the right screen, screening media and service program for any customer budget or need, all working together towards one goal – maximizing the full potential of the customer’s screening operation.

Sandvik screening equip-ment, screening media and services are designed to work optimally with each other and ensure the screening operation is as productive as possible. Customers will also benefit from having on-going access to experienced Sandvik specialists who can help with the right config-uration, optimization and troubleshooting.

New modular screensAs part of Peak Screen-

i n g , S a n d v i k i s n o w introducing three new ranges of maintenance friendly, high performing modular screens that are more versatile, more reliable and faster to get on-site.

The screens are equipped

with Sandvik screening media as standard, unless otherwise specified. Sandvik works closely with customers to determine the right solu-tion for their applications, including Sandvik exclusive options such as the WX6500 tensioned rubber screening media with up to 15-times longer wear life than standard wire mesh, but with the same screening accuracy for better productivity and uptime.

The new SL Linear Motion Screens are designed for ac-curate secondary screening and final sizing, as well as scalping ahead of crushers in mining applications. SL screens are ideal in conditions where the height is limited by surrounding facilities, for screening small and short fractions, and when heavy material is loaded on the screen.

With a wide variety of options and maximized ad-justability, the screens can be optimized to each appli-cation.

The new SJ Circular Mo-tion Screens are specially designed for extra heavy-duty, medium and fine screening applications. The inclined screen is ideal for screening after primary and secondary crushing, as a splitter screen to divide flows within a plant, and for final screening of a finished fraction. With a wide variety of options and adjust-ability, these screens can be optimized to each applica-tion.

SA Circular Motion Screens are specially designed for heavy-duty, medium and fine screening applications.

The inclined screen is ideal for screening after primary and secondary crushing, as a splitter screen to divide flows within a plant, and for final screening of a finished frac-tion. Availability of options make these screens suitable for most of the applications.

The screening solutions also come with a performance guarantee where Sand-vik promises the solution achieves the performance that has been agreed on together with the customer,

or Sandvik will work with the solution until it does.

“Peak Screening shows our understanding of cus-tomers’ productivity needs, and commitment to solving their challenges in uncon-ventional, industry-first ways. We want to help customers benefit from the competitive advantage Peak Screening can provide,,” said Mats Dahlberg, vice president of Lifecycle Service Stationary Crushing and Screening at Sandvik.

To create the UltraWash 6505, McLanahan Corpor-ation carefully thought of all the details and features that will make maintenance and efficiency easier for a mod-ular wash plant.

The result is several truly unique features, some of which are patent pending.

The UltraWash 6505 is equipped with the patent pending Eze-Riser, which allows the operator to cut pump maintenance time in half. Another patent-pending feature is the Fines Forward Slide. Alongside the aggre-gate discharge hood, these features are included to in-crease efficiency.

Operators can also convert the UltraWash 6505 from a single to double wash system with a convertible sump.

Eze-RiserTh e Eze - R i s e r w o rk s

together with the pump ser-vice trolley to enable safe and

efficient pump maintenance, such as changing the impel-lers or replacing the casing liners.

A foot pedal lifts the dis-charge pipe from the pump and utilizes a locking mech-anism to then hold the pipe up, offering the clearance needed for the pump to roll out on the trolley service platform without restriction. As well, sufficient flexibility is provided by the hydro-cyclone entry hose bend above to accommodate these few millimetres of pipe trav-el, making it unnecessary to disturb pipework, other than where it connects directly to the pump at its suction and discharge flanges.

Fines Forward SlideThe manually-adjustable

Fines Forward Slide is able to divert a portion of raw fines into the coarse sand pro-cessing stream. This ability balances the downstream

process to optimize plant capacity.

Alternatively, by substi-tuting the last row of fine material screen panels with coarse material screen pan-els, the Fines Forward Slide will allow alterations of the proportions of fine and coarse decking areas above, while still preventing the loss of coarse material into the fines processing stream.

Repositioning the Fines Forward Slide only requires two people (one each side of the sizing screen), eliminat-ing the use of cranes or other lifting equipment.

Washed aggregate is dis-charged from the end of the sizing screen in up to three discrete size fractions for sep-arate stockpiling. However, any two adjacent — or all three — aggregate product sizes may be recombined, either for consolidated stock-piling or onward processing as required, simply by one

person’s manual operation of the aggregate discharge/remixing hood’s rubber-lined diversion traps.

McLanahan’s UltraWash is also the only modular wash plant in the market that offers a sump conversion kit. With a sump conversion kit, the operator may quickly and

safely change between a one-or-two-pump setup.

As well, the sand process may also be altered to pro-cess a single wash, a double wash or a two-product sand.

So, even if the process r e q u i r e m e n t s c h a n g e throughout the operating lifetime, you can modify the plant to suit the outcome that is required.

TECHNOLOGY

Since Komatsu customers began piloting Smart Construction capabilities in 2015, the new tech-nologies have been connecting people, equipment and construc-tion processes to enhance work-flows in an open platform.

Supported by its strategic part-ners, who are leaders in their own fields, Komatsu’s vision is to im-prove operations across all phases of the construction process by en-abling digital transformation of customer jobsites.

With Smart Construction, soft-ware, hardware and services come together to help customers be more connected, efficient and successful.

Since ConExpo, Komatsu has been introducing new technol-ogies, and the company plans to continue to introduce a dozen new solutions within the year.

iMC 2.0Recognizing that productivity is

key to customer success, Komatsu has introduced intelligent Machine Control 2.0. Komatsu’s intelligent Machine Control (iMC) is a suite of features that use advanced ma-chine technology — some of it patent-pending — to improve dozer productivity.

The new iMC 2.0 capabilities are available on the new D71PXi-24 hydrostatic transmission (HST) dozer.

The patent-pending proactive dozing control is one of the new features included in iMC 2.0. Pro-active dozing control is more than 60 per cent more productive than the previous generation.

The feature is capable of auto-matically completing cuts/strips from existing terrain, like an experi-enced operator. As well, it measures

the terrain it tracks and uses that track-level data to plan the next pass. Proactive dozing control can also operate automatically 100 per cent of the time.

Another new iMC 2.0 feature is the patent-pending lift layer con-trol, which automatically spreads fill from existing terrain with the press of a button. As well, it meas-ures the terrain it tracks over and uses that data to plan the next pass. Combined, this doubles produc-tion and achieves consistent layers for quality compaction.

Tilt steering control auto-matically tilts the blade to maintain straight travel during rough dozing. The feature reduces the need for operator steering input by up to 80 per cent.

Komatsu's quick surface creation creates a temporary design surface with one press of the button. Com-bined with other iMC 2.0 functions, operators can begin stripping or spreading using automatic modes while waiting for finish grade mode.

Within the year, intelligent Machine Control 2.0 will be com-mercially available on additional Komatsu dozers.

Smart ConstructionAs part of its Smart Construction

solutions, Komatsu has created an upcoming suite of 11 technologies to enhance the digital transform-ation, and improve operations across all steps of the construction process.

Tapping into the power of the internet of things (IoT), Komatsu’s construction customers will soon be able to control construction planning, management, schedule, costs and optimize processes re-motely and in near real time with

the company’s incoming suite of Smart Construction solutions.

The 11 new solutions included in Komatsu’s Smart Construction roadmap will begin to be released in the next few months.

The new solutions include: Smart Construction Design

uses 3D data generations. Its users will be able to go from rolled up paper plans to 3D designs.

Smart Construction Remote allows the transfer of new design data to machines in the field, or re-motely support operators, without travelling to the jobsite.

Smart Construction Dashboard uses graphically visualize design, drone and machine data to meas-ure cut and fills, quantities as well as productivity.

Smart Construction Fleet col-lects the data needed to optimize fleets and track production, all on a mobile app.

Smart Construction Insight displays an overview of progress, productivity and profitability across multiple jobsites.

Smart Construction Simulation allows the simulation of jobsites, from start to finish, to optimize results, before the first yard of dirt is moved.

Smart Construction Retrofit equips legacy excavators of any make or model with access to 3D data, giving operators the guidance they need.

Smart Construction Rover is a cost-effective, high-value 3D rover to outfit all key jobsite personnel.

Smart Construction Drone provides a bird’s-eye view of the jobsite, in a fraction of the time required by a ground-based survey.

Smart Construction Edge quick-ly processes drone data into a 3D

terrain map without leaving the jobsite.

Smart Construction Field is a cost-effective project management tool that includes cost tracking and helps determine the best ways to bid, manage and resource projects.

MyKomatsuDeveloped with extensive

customer and user research, MyKo-matsu provides a complimentary web-based portal that delivers ac-cess to parts ordering and machine data, as well as parts and operating manuals.

MyKomatsu now integrates 20 legacy systems to create actionable intelligence to assist customers in effectively running their busi-nesses.

Via MyKomatsu, the manufactur-er’s customers now have the ability to access and manage their fleet data 24/7 in a standardized and organized way. The comprehensive portal provides access to parts and machine information, and makes it easy to order parts online.

As well, MyKomatsu allows users to visualize and evaluate their assets with fleet-wide or equip-ment-specific information from any device. Supported by easy access to the data, customers can ensure that each machine receives sched-uled and necessary maintenance to prevent downtime. The system is password and encryption-pro-tected.

MyKomatsu’s simple technology solution allows users to view their fleet of machines or click on a par-ticular asset for additional details. Serious Labs has created a Universal Motion Base (UMB) for seated, virtual reality heavy equipment simulators.

The UMB was designed to serve as a common base for the development of addition-al virtual reality equipment simulators such as skid steers, dozers, excavators and back-hoes.

“We are really excited about our latest innovation,” said Jim Colvin, CEO of Serious Labs. “Because of its versa-tility, the UMB has opened a

wide door for us to have con-versations with any number of equipment manufacturers or industry regulators where-by we could build training simulators, no matter what industry they are in or where in the world they are located.”

The UMB comes standard with an operator’s seat, a cus-tom-tuned D-Box actuator system for motion-feedback and a slide-lock attachment system, which focuses on operator comfort during equipment training.

The design of the UMB offers logical options for equipment controls, in-cluding a steering column or control handles, multiple pedal options and attachment points on either side of the operator to accommodate all future equipment types.

When Serious Labs de-velops future equipment simulators on top of the UMB, they plan to tune the D-Box actuator system to match that equipment’s personality and feel to ensure it provides critical motion queueing. This will help to mitigate cybersickness, a problem found with many simulators on the market today.

“The UMB marks our en-trance into developing VR simulators for dirt moving equipment. This will intro-duce task-based scenarios for tool interaction with a dynam-ic terrain. In our simulators, if you were to operate a piece of equipment to pick up a load of dirt, traverse a jobsite and unload that dirt, we would be capturing telemetry on how to work a pile, the depth of the

dig and the resistance on the equipment, wheel rotations from the dig and dump pile, and the conservation of mass during the task among many others,” said Wade Carson, senior director of product development at Serious Labs.

“This type of data helps to determine many aspects of equipment operation in addition to the operator’s proficiency and efficiency. We want to make sure that if these operators are operating these pieces of equipment, they're being efficient, and not damaging equipment in the process of being efficient. These tasks and results have real world implications.”

The UMB is being of-fered both inside and out of the construction indus-try, demonstrating Serious Labs’ approach to tech de-velopment. The company is currently in a pilot phase to develop forklift simulators with United Rentals, built upon the UMB. The company is also seeking additional partners in the construction industry, and are looking to expand beyond heavy equip-ment with active discussions in the commercial carrier in-dustry.

“Virtual reality has changed the training landscape in the construction equipment world. Operators can now train in a risk-free environ-ment which helps to save lives, reduce accidents and eliminate damaged equip-ment by untrained operators,” Colvin said.

“Disruption is becoming the new normal.”

Bridgestone Corporation has completed the purchase of the iTrack Solutions Business from the United Kingdom-based Transense Technologies.

Bridgestone has created ATMS Technol-ogy Limited, newly-formed wholly owned subsidiary, to handle all iTrack technology.

Created for the off-the-road vehicle mar-ket, iTrack is a provider of tire management solutions. The business offers a comprehen-sive tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) specially designed for mining tires.

In addition to tire temperature and pres-sure monitoring, the iTrack tire management platform provides customizable geofen-cing, speed alerts and more to assist mining customers to optimize their operations for increased productivity and profitability.

“This acquisition helps move Bridgestone closer to its goal of becoming a leader in sus-tainable and advanced mobility solutions,” said Tomohiro Kusano, vice president and senior officer of G-MAA (Mining, Aircraft, Agriculture) solutions business at Bridge-stone Corporation. “As a global solutions provider, Bridgestone will create new value for our customers by delivering tire and mobility-related data that enhances their operations.”

Bridgestone entered into a joint collabor-ation agreement with Transense in August 2019 and began referring OTR customers to the iTrack solutions platform, following the agreement.

According to Bridgestone, customer re-sponse to the tire management platform has been positive.

"These arrangements further demonstrate the position of iTrack as a globally-preferred provider of tyre management solutions for the off-the-road (OTR) vehicle market, which we believe will achieve even greater success with Bridgestone," said Nigel Rogers, executive chairman of Transense.

Now, Bridgestone will expand this offer-ing to additional OTR customers as it fully integrates the solution into its portfolio. To ensure a seamless transition, all employees of the iTrack Solutions Business will join Bridgestone as part of the acquisition, in-cluding David Ford as chief executive officer and Graham Storey as director of global sales. David and Graham have resigned as directors of Transense.

Rogers, who now becomes executive chair-man of Transense, will also be appointed as a non-executive director of ATMS in his capacity as the representative of Transense.

Even in the upside-down world of 2020, some things stay the same. And that is the power of brands.

This is especially true for construction equipment, as a passion for one name of machine can be a family affair, with several generations of contractor all buying into a single brand promise.

However, the relationship the customer has — and will have in the future — is des-tined to change, offering both opportunity and danger to the industry’s biggest names.

Today, a customer has a close relation-ship with their brand’s dealer salesperson,

who then manages all elements of the relationship.

This personal approach works well for larger machines, but increasingly – and especially for the new generation of electric compact machines – this analogue world is turning digital.

Disruption is comingThe incredible growth of electric vehicle

manufacturer Tesla is disrupting the auto-motive industry.

They do this by appealing to a tech-savvy generation that is well informed and inter-

ested in the new electric technology. Tesla has a different relationship with consum-ers – a mostly digital one, where buyers go online to spec their cars and pay for them.

Is this the right formula for construction equipment? No. And Yes. No for larger production machines that need a lot of interaction between customer and dealer. And Yes, for smaller, simpler, electric com-pact machines that tend to be used less and need little maintenance.

The arrival of electromobility in construc-tion equipment is proving to be the catalyst for change. They are so different, they can be delivered to market in a different way. Like with Tesla, the first customers for machines such as Volvo’s new ECR25 electric compact excavator and L25 electric compact wheel loader are early adopters who are interested in the technology, but also willing to engage in a new sales process.

Cost innovation Before economies of scale kick in, new

technology tends to be more expensive than the old tech it replaces. It’s as true for widescreen televisions as it is with electric cars. Prices come down over time. The first customers of our new electric machines know they will pay a premium, but are willing to do so for the benefits the tech-nology offers. For example, our compact machines include zero emissions, and hardly any vibrations or noise. But we need to minimize the price premium by making the whole sales process lower cost and more efficient. Just like Tesla, there will be no large sales organization to promote these ma-chines, instead customers will be expected to self-educate via online sales information. For relatively simple-to-specify machines like compact equipment, customers will commit to buying without any interaction with a human salesperson.

This is a revolution for construction equipment, but it is a trend that is hap-pening everywhere.

Business-to-business relationships are becoming increasingly consumer-focused, and more digital. It’s also becoming far more transparent.

Pricing of machines in our industry used to be secret, with lots of haggling and deal-making. Selling machines online needs to be clear and competitive and in-volve no haggling. Customers will be able to compare between models and brands with perfect information.

Is this a threat to dealers? No. In a market as fiercely competitive as compact equip-ment, dealers currently can’t spend too much time on sales – or profits disappear. With only small differences between com-

petitors and no need to trial machines before purchase, it is the assurance the brand offers to the customer that will sway the deal.

However, the dealer is not cut out of the sales loop, and will still be responsible for preparing, delivering and maintaining the machine over its working life. The back-end support stays the same, it’s the front-end sales process that is being digitized.

New audiences The advent of electric machines is more

than just a different power source. They are opening up compact machines to new audiences and markets. Their zero emis-sions are excellent in horticulture and the food sector — one of our ECR25 Elec-tric excavators helped to build the Gold Award-winning garden at last year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

No emissions mean they can be used indoors, and the fact they are silent means they can work later into the evening in cities and will not disturb the peace when doing grave digging duties.

There are lots of novel uses these ma-chines can be put to, and we are looking at the rental fleet to understand customer behaviour and learn the new tasks these machines are assigned.

Good digital relationships At Volvo CE, we have recently launched

an online prebooking tool for our electric machines. This is just the first step on our journey towards complete ecommerce functionality. Online configurators that wrap together machines, warranty packages, financing deals and attachments need to be developed.

The combination of electromobility and ecommerce presents an amazing oppor-tunity for the construction industry. The secret of success in this brave new world will be having a good digital relationship with the new breed of tech-savvy consum-er. Big brands such as Volvo might have a head start in this regard, but success isn’t guaranteed.

If OEMs don’t embrace this new digit-al dynamic, a disruptor like Tesla could upend the traditional analogue construction equipment market.

Based in Cambridge, England, Mats Bred-borg is Volvo Construction Equipment’s director of brand and marketing communi-cations, and architect of the company’s online prebooking tool for electric compact machines.

Autonomous solutions specialist RCT has announced it is the first independent technology provider to successfully automate Cat’s recently-released R1700K underground loader.

The K Series represents the latest version of Cat’s under-ground loader range and boasts several advanced features not previously accessible on the manufacturer’s machinery.

ControlMaster GuidanceRecently, RCT successfully installed and commissioned

its ControlMaster Guidance Automation solution onto a Cat R1700K underground loader in Kalgoorlie, weeks after it was introduced to the Western Australian market.

Guidance Automation allows equipment operators to manage the Cat R1700K loaders from the safety of a ControlMaster Automation Centre, located on the mine’s surface or in designated areas in the underground mine.

Brendon Cullen, RCT automation and control prod-uct manager, said the work is a major milestone for the company.

“RCT has a long history of successfully integrating with machinery developed by any original equipment manu-facturer and this project is no different,” he said.

“Our technicians assessed the R1700K underground loader in our Kalgoorlie workshop and configured our automation solution to interface with the machine and utilize all of its functions.”

Previous achievementsIn 2019, RCT commissioned ControlMaster Guidance

Automation onto Sandvik’s i Series loader and previously installed ControlMaster Guidance Automation on a new Eprioc ST18 loader.

“Machine operators can use Guidance Automation and operate the loaders in higher gears and access pro-portional braking to safely and efficiently carry out their work,” Cullen said.

“Guidance Automation incorporates features such as autodig, autodump, bucket positioning and it can make use of the machine’s traction control if required.

“Going forward we will be able to commission Control-

Master Guidance Automation on the Cat R1700K loader on any mine site backed by technical support from our regional offices around the world.”

RCT is a smart technology company that designs, manu-factures and delivers technology and service solutions to

multiple sectors including mining, industrial, agricultural and civil.

Since its creation in the 1970s, RCT has grown to include more than 215 employees with clients in more than 72 countries worldwide.
