Drastic Need for Improvement

• After School Programs can be found in some form or another in nearly every city and town in the Nation. Arne Duncan, the Secretary of Educations says, "If we are serious about having more students be productive citizens, if we are serious about having more students prepared to be successful in college, dramatically improving the quality and the quantity of after-school programming is going to be at the heart of our work as a country."

• So, how can you prepare for this opportunity? C4K offers you a learning experience that is flexible—join a face-to-face or online class. We put you first, your schedule, your availability, your talent. The C4K trainings is created by practitioners who have developed expertise by being a part of an after school program.

There are over 400 Minis, Modules, Lessons, and Classes that are great for initial and continuous training. These instructional videos capture insight and the “how-to” from field-experienced after-school professionals. The C4K video system was primarily fashioned after YouTube as research indicates that this will allow for the best learning. A description of Minis, Modules, Lessons and Classes follows:

Click Here for Video on Online Instruction

Video Type DescriptionMinis Minis are quick videos ranging from 3 to 5 minutes long.  They give a brief training on after school related topics.

Modules Modules are about twice as long as minis.  They give a little more information that Minis do.  They can be an in-depth look at a topic that cannot be explained in the time frame of a Mini.

Lessons Lessons explore high quality after school programming.  Lessons range from 12-25 minutes in length.  You can also download a power point of the Lesson.

Classes Classes are similar to lessons.  They share information about topic in-depth regarding high-quality after school programs that are supported by exemplary performance.  They are 15-35 minutes in length.  These too have power points.

• Find gold in our Treasure Chest! C4K after school experts have compiled proven program guides in four formats: Activities, Kits, Units and Toolboxes. Activities are simply that, individual activities that are hands-on, engaging, fun and standards-based. Kits are a collection of activities around a single theme or type which will give you a variety of options to use with your young people. Units are a series of lessons that are combined to promote investigation, hands-on experiences, and new learning. Units are usually 6-12 lessons in length. Remember that products are created by a variety of C4K experts, so don’t be surprised if the format is slightly different. Toolboxes are separated by PL and SC resources. The toolboxes are full of helpful materials that can be use in their routine during program.

Virtual Solutions• Tools to Help with Training Implementation:

Consult4Kids has created tools to help with implementing the online training provided on the site.

Tool Description

Quality Program Checklist

This checklist give you a guideline of what should be happening in each component of your program.

Correlation Standard Program Checklist

This gives a list of videos that support the Quality Program Checklist. This is divided by PL (frontline staff) and SC (supervisor).

T.A.P.E. This correlation checklist aligns the videos to support the Core Competencies of afterschool (Based on LA TAPE Project.) This is divided by PL (frontline staff) and SC (supervisor).

Perspectives This is a one page handout per video (minis and modules) that pose thinking/review about the video.

Performance Rubric: This rubric helps to place staff at levels depending on capacity as well as the length of time they have worked in the program. This is divided by PL (frontline staff) and SC (supervisor).

Additional resources include a list of online instruction videos by number and alphabetical order, overview on how to use the tracking system, and a list of tutorial videos to assist with how to use the site, now to provide time for training in your

program and more.

Virtual SolutionsHold Staff Accountable to Complete Training:

• Our newest introduction is the Video Assignment and Reports system. As a supervisor, you have the ability to assign videos to staff based on group and individual needs. You also have the ability to check the progress of training by compiling a report. Assigning staff training has been made simple by using the video assignment system. Assign videos based on performance rubric, T.A.P.E. (Core Competencies), Quality Program Checklist or by individual video.

• Hold staff accountable by monitoring their completion of the assigned videos by creating reports based on the assignment criteria. When staff log into the site, they will have a task list of the video they are assigned to watch.

• There are 3 different types of reports that can be generated.Overall Report: View the percentage of completion holisticallyOverall Individual Report: View the percentage of completion per personIndividual Report: View the details of each video assigned per person.

• For an overview of this feature, please watch this video: Video Assignment and Report Tutorial

Benefits of Virtual Training• With the Video Assignment and Report System, you have the ability to hold each

individual accountable to completing the required trainings. This system also tracks all training that has been reviewed, assigned or self completed. Having trainings tracked in this fashion will eliminate certain HR issues.

– Example: Miss Martinez made her students run laps because they were not listening. When asked why she took those actions even though it’s against district policy, she states that she didn’t know. Her supervisor insist that they have covered that in a training. Records state that she attended a district wide training but cannot verify that she had attended that training in particular. With Consult4Kids, exact trainings are tracked so that scenarios like this can be avoided. It makes accountability black and white.

• Create customizable training plans for your site as well as each individual person. Create trainings that meet your needs all throughout the year.

– Summer School Training / Summer Learning– Beginning of the School Year Training– Orientation for New Staff– Continuous Staff Training throughout the Year– Weekly Staff Meeting Trainings– Winter and Spring Break Trainings

Turn Over Total Cost

10 20 $10,000 $2,300.00 30% - $3,690 $15,990

What if you have 5 sites?

50 20 $15,000 $11,500 30% - $6,450 $32,950

Benefits of Virtual Training• Save your program money! How you say?

– If you hire internally or externally for trainings, it will cost roughly $200 - $1,000 per hour to train staff. [$500.00 per site and $750.00 for multiple sites]This is taking into account the person’s time they have spent customizing the training for your site(s) as well as supplies and time spent to complete training. It also depends on how many people you have facilitating the trainings.

– Staff needs to be paid to attend trainings as well. Since staff turn over for the year is recorded at roughly 30%, that is something else that must be taken into consideration when budgeting for professional development.

What is you have 5 Sites?50 20 $6,250 + ($145x20) = $9,150 $11,500 $20,650

Benefits of Virtual Training• Save your program money! How you say?

– Accessing the Consult4Kids website will only cost your site(s) the subscription for the entire year. Any supervisor can assign videos or create a plan on what online trainings will be covered when facilitating training at site or as a program. The cost per site amount includes 6 individual accounts. Any additional staff can be added on for an additional price. Pricing depends on program size.

– Since a subscription is being purchased, turn over no longer plays a factor in the budget. When one person leaves, that slot is cleared and a new person can plug right in.

You should also know that upper management, including directors, managers, and consultants receive their accounts for free.

What We BelieveConsult 4 Kids, the current iteration of a deep commitment to young people, has roots in over two centuries of work. Whether as teachers, coaches, mentors, consultants, or trainers, the Consult4Kids Team continues to dedicate its work life to improving the outcomes for children and youth who are often labeled, "at-risk". We prefer to think of these young people as "in opportunity", full of possibilities and potential. The C4K Team has experienced first-hand what it takes to run a high-quality after school program that offers sports, performing arts, homework assistance, remedial academic support, character education, opportunities to provide community service, physical activity and other healthy living classes, all while building strong relationships with young people, their families and the school day staff.

Quality after school programs require equal doses of exemplary performance by staff and excellent programming that supports student learning. The C4K Team has expertise in both and offers a unique model of staff development that will ignite the passion, enthusiasm, and innovation of staff by arming them with the mind set, skills and tool kit needed to be an outstanding role model and leader.

C4K is serious about supporting the dramatic improvement of the quality of after school programs and provides a forum for dedicated after school leaders to share their expertise and work with individual programs to provide solutions to ensure high quality after school programs throughout the United States.
