Lent: The Way of the Cross Easter is the oldest Christian festival; it celebrates the

central event in the story of salvation: Christ’s crucifixion and

resurrection. But it quickly evolved into a season extending fifty days

after Easter to Pentecost and forty before Easter – a time of prepara-

tion called “Lent.” Lent apparently began as the time for new converts

to get ready for baptism (on Easter) and for the faithful to renew their

baptismal commitments.

Those preparing for baptism learned the basics of our faith: the

Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, the Sermon on the Mount

(Matthew 5-7), and various spiritual practices. Even today, Lent still

has this emphasis on reaffirming our baptismal identity and living as

the people Christ has made us.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. The Ashes remind us that un-

less we are willing to turn to Christ and die to ourselves, we cannot be

raised with Christ to new life. Having looked our mortality in the face

and recognized our deep need for God, we begin the journey toward

resurrection life by daily surrendering our old lives and turning to

Christ.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 2/10 at 7pm in the sanctuary

for worship.

This year our “Lent Events” will be a series of brief Sunday

evening worship services (beginning 2/14). The services begin at 5pm

in the Dining Room and are immediately followed by soup suppers.

I would like to invite you to an evening

potluck. Not just any potluck but this potluck is taking place on February 7th.

Why February 7th you ask, because we are having a Souper Bowl Potluck. No that is not a mis-

spelling, the Super Bowl is that night but I do know how to spell. Nor does it mean that we are all sup-

posed to bring soup. Kimberly and I will be making Knephla Soup but I would invite you to bring other

football watching foods, because we will be stream-

ing the game on at least two screens in the Dining Room. There will be childcare available here at the

church. So come on out and have some good food

and fellowship and hopefully enjoy a good game.

We’ve Got Mail

Good morning FPC Huron! 1-19-2016 I just thought I would send an update on Roger. Tomor-row will be his third treatment of Keytruda. The treatments have been very well-tolerated and he's been able to work full-time except for treatment days, he gets tired & gets a slight rash. He will have CT scans on February 5 to determine re-sponse. Hopefully the treatment is working....of course we would be elated if the spots on his liver would be gone or at least shrinking! Thankfully, Roger is not in any pain and all of his lab work is completely normal. We appreciate your contin-ued thoughts and prayers from our Huron church family! Teri Bierstedt Presbyterian Congregation. I am a member of the United States Air Force stationed at Meldenhall Air Force Base in England. My grandma ,Donna Meiers, and several other family members are a part of your congregation. W would like to say thank you for the holiday care package my wife and I received from you. All the Christ-mas goodies tasted great and really made for some special hol-iday memories of home. Thank you “grandma” for our favorite ginger snap cookies. Along with your care package we also received our own special care pkg. Grandma’s 6th great grandchild was born on Dec. 20th and was named Casen LeRoy. Family and friends are a special part of our holiday memories and everyday life. Thanks again for remembering me and my family over the holiday season. God Bless you all! Member Highlights

Terry and Marla Bawdon Terry is the fourth child of Rich and Lila Bawdon of Ree Heights. He has three living brothers; Jessie of Tea, Stanley of Broadland, and Brad and wife, Brenda, of Alpena. He also has a sister, Diane, (Norm) Bryan who lives in Alaska. His father and brother, Kevin, have passed away. Terry attended a country school. His mother, Lila, still lives in Huron. In 1968 the family moved to Huron, where Terry gradu-ated from high school. Marla is the second child of Floyd and Carol Pevestorf. Her father is deceased. Mom, Carol and sister, Nancy

(Ken) Shoultz and family, all attend First Church. Sister, Linda (Tim) Traver, is a member of Bonilla Presbyterian Church. Terry and Marla were married in First Church October 26, 1974. To this union three daughters were born; Melissa, Dawn, and Kayla. Melissa (Damion) Heathcote lives in Henderson, NV. She is a regis-tered nurse and Damion is in the Air Force. They have a daughter, Page, who is 11 years old. Dawn (Josh) Reimer lives in Gillette, WY. Dawn works for Sulzer/EMS in accounts payable and Josh is a lineman for Schulte TA. They have two children, Alexis is 11 and Jadie is 6. Daughter, Kayla (Matt) White lives in Laramie, WY and is assistant clerk of Albany Co. Matt is in ranching and construction. They have a daughter, Clara, who is 2. Terry worked as a cattle buyer for Huron Dressed Beef and has worked for Terex Mfg. since 1990. He also enjoys raising Black Angus cattle. Marla has worked for the Tschetter & Hohm Clinic since 1976. She took time off to stay at home when their daughters were young but has been back with the Clinic now since 1993. Terry and Marla try and visit their daughters and families at least once or twice every year and they appreciate it when the families come home to visit. Every summer they try to have the four granddaughters here for at least a week and thoroughly delight the time spent with them. The 2015 Christmas was spent with Melissa and her family. The tBawdons take pleasure working in the garden and other outside things. Terry savors gardening and is especially proud of the onions and sweet corn he raises. Marla has been associated with Wednesday night activities at First Church ever since she was a little girl. She remembers being a “Presby Kid” after school, when they practiced singing and even had little choir robes to wear when they sang on Sunday. She also remembers work-ing with Viola Lehr and the “Youth Club”. She has helped in the kitchen as well, when their daughters were in Logos.
