By Mike Hoffman Well the October Fly Tiers Roundtable meeting is on track and scheduled for Wednesday 10/14/15 at the NDOW meeting room at 6:30 pm. Our guest tier will be Mike Sevon, Mike will be tying a few of his new radial Pyramid flies. Should be a great meeting and I look forward to seeing you there! As of right now we are planning on having our November meeting on Wednesday 11/11/15, same time same place! Keep an eye out for more info and following write ups? “Keep a tight line”

Fly Tiers Roundtable, Wednesday October 14

th, 6:30 P.M.

This month’s round table event will feature Mike Sevon tying two of his favorite Pyramid Lake streamer fly patterns: With the tui chub still inshore at Pyramid Lake, these streamer style patterns will be timely ties. The first fly pattern will be John Barr’s SlumpBuster. This streamlined durable cone-headed pattern gets deep fast and casts like a bullet. Here’s the materials for this fly: Hook: Size 4-6 Tiemco 5263 Thread: Olive 70 Denier Ultra Tread Cone: large gold or Copper tungsten or brass Body: Crystal Sparkle Braid Rib: Red Ultra Wire (Brassie) Wing, tail and collar: Olive Pine squirrel Zonker strips Cement: Zap-A-Gap gel Balanced leaches and minnows have become popular at Pyramid Lake and Mike has developed a unique large balanced minnow. To learn the secrets of tying and fishing this fly don’t miss this round table event. He will supply the hooks and some other specialized materials. Tyers will need to bring: Thread: White 70 Ultrathread Body: White Crystal Flash Tail: White marabou Ribbing: Red Ultra Wire:Brassie size. Wing and tail: Olive or grey Pine squirrel Zonker strips

CDC EMERGER This pattern can be tied in various color schemes to create a good match for anything from a caddis to the smallest mayfly. You can also change the wing material to produce some great variations. I have used 2mm foam, replacing the CDC loop wing, producing a slimmer profile that hangs great in the surface.

CDC LOOP WING EMERGER

Hook: TMC 2457 or similar, size 10-18 Thread: 8/0 Rusty dun Tail: Mallard flank, Light dun Body: CDC, Medium dun, 1 feather twisted and wrapped Ribbing: Silver Ultra wire Wing: Same as body, 2 CDC feathers looped Thorax: Same as body, Barbs dubbed I’ve had people come up and ask me, what is CDC and why do I often apply it to my dry, emerger and nymph patterns? CDC stands for, cul-de-canard, a feather that translate as “Bottom of the Duck.” It really doesn’t come from the bottom of the duck, but from an area around the preen gland a short distance up from the ducks tail feathers. These feathers hold the oils that the duck uses to waterproof it’s feathers. They are very fluffy and trap a lot of air, making for a fly that floats very well. When forced under the surface the CDC captures many sparkling bubbles of air that shine and attract the attention of any fish that eats bugs. The hundreds of tiny barbs always move, imitating the legs and antenna of an emerging insect. This pattern is versatile and effective when fished with a floating line near shallow weed beds. Catching a fish on your own fly is one of the most satisfying angling experiences. Mike O’Brien

The Angler’s Line The Club's Annual Family Picnic was held at Crosby's Lodge, Pyramid Lake on Sunday, October 5th. Not many members fished, but 25 came to eat. A spaghetti lunch was provided by Crosby's. We had the usual fish stories, mostly by Doug and a raffle. The grand prize was the boat in picture, won by Tom Smith... just kidding, we were all out there admiring that $35.500 fishing machine. It was a nice day and as you can tell good food. Curt

Truckee River Cleanup: The Truckee River Flyfishers had another successful River cleanup on September 26. Our club has been doing an annual cleanup since 1978-the year after its inception. This year we had 18 volunteers including one random family of four and Joshua, a member of the Northern Nevada Hopes organization. The NN Hopes conducts a monthly sharps cleanup on the river in the downtown area. On Saturday we picked up 23 sharps. This is a great day outing with a few hours of work and a nice BBQ at noon. We cleaned up that section of the river between the Reno Auto Museum and the Wells Avenue Bridge. In total, the group picked up 25 bags of garbage, one double sized mattress, a float tube, a small inflatable raft and one large inflatable raft.

Project Healing Waters

TRF members Press Clewe, Hank Evans, Mike O'Brien, James Kwasny and John Imsdahl participated in the first annual Reno VA Wellness Faire at Reno VA hospital on September 18th. The Reno VA asked that our Healing Waters program come to their new event and teach Fly tying.

October 2015 Prospects

Truckee River: Flows have been consistently 90 cfs on the California side and 15 cfs on the Nevada side for about the last two months. Pools that held a lot of fish at the beginning of summer are now depleted due to mortality or harvest. If you must fish, the best water for the last couple of months has been the stretch from Glenshire to Farad. Streamers could produce a few good fish. Little Truckee: The pressure has subsided here but flows have been up and down for the last month. Flows are lower than normal but what’s unusual about that. Beatis hatches mid day , this is a good time to swing a soft hackle thru some of the tail outs. Small Brassie fished near the bottom is always a good choice. Boca, Stampede, & Prosser Res. Even though capacities are at a historic minimum, there should still be some run up activity. Browns have already moved into the LT and a large offering could yield a big fish. Lake Davis: Last October was unusually tough because the Daphnia hatch had all the fish full and not taking the typical patterns. Water clarity should improve and fish should be taking any pattern that looks like food after the Daphnia hatch is over. Last I heard you could still launch at Honker ramp. There are a lot of fish in the lake. Finding them and getting the right fly in front of them is tough! Frenchman Res: Same Daphnia hatch happened here last year and I expect it to happen again. Late September fishing was decent in the northeastern part of the lower half of the lake. Small Calibeatis patterns worked well. Pyramid Lake: Most catching occurs at the north end of the lake. Tubing in thirty feet of water in Warrior’s Bay should produce good numbers, not that I recommend tubing in Pyramid. Should be lots of bait in the water from what I have heard from the “Perch” fishermen. New regulations this year. You will now have to have your name, address, and phone number on your ladder, must park 100 feet away from the water, and no more “Perch” fishing. Lots of changes, please pick up the regulations at Crosby’s or the Warden’s station. East Walker River: Flows have been low for such a long time. I don’t know anyone who has fished there. This is generally the time to fish a streamer, stay off the brown reds! Eagle Lake: http://eaglelakefishing.net/eagle-lake-best-fishing-locations.php This is a good place for information on Eagle Lake. The water is way down.

Lake Almanor: Fishing here has been good all summer so this should equate to a good fall bite. Hamilton Branch area has been crowded and should continue to be that way. Pond Smelt patterns have been producing in the Prattville area. Smallie fishing should be good.
