Fall is upon us. There is a crispness in the air and leaves are slowly changing colors. Stores trade out their cool summer wares for warmer fall layers, including jackets and sweaters. Fall represents an annual shift in fashion from silhouette and proportions to patterns and colors. A few trends to look for according to New York Magazine are: 1) Powder-pinks, grays and golds, 2) Skirts just past the knee, 3) Furry stripes and graphic plaids, 4) Jazzy flats (shoes) and 5) Oversized Bags.
Fall is also a great time to experience New York City, as it marks the opening of the theater, music and opera seasons. Museums and galleries are teeming with new exhibits. And there is an abundance of fashion related must-dos. Case in point, no one should miss the Jean-Paul Gaultier exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum! Gaultier is a master haute couturier whose work has influenced our culture for more than 30 years.
In a real way, fall in New York City is the ultimate classroom. This quarter marks the beginning of our collaboration with WindowsWear.com to bring visual merchandising professionals to our campus. Dont miss out!

1) What drew you to the fashion business?I was drawn into the fashion business by my love for the glamour of NYC. I grew up in upstate New York and when I first visited NYC as a teenager I was immediately drawn to everything NYC had to offer, particularly the shopping on Fifth and Madison Aves. It was then that I knew I wanted to live here and work in fashion.
2) What three things should students take advantage of while at school?Students should take advantage of: 1) the connections that Berkeley College offers, 2) The knowledge of the experienced Berkeley faculty, and 3) Get involved in the fashion club.
3) What makes Berkeley Colleges fashion program unique?One thing that makes Berkeley Colleges fashion program unique is the online component. Whether you are full-time online or just want to take a class online, you can get the same wonderful courses and have access to all that the fashion program has to offer from the comfort of your own home. Personally, I feel that no other school offers as thorough of an online fashion program as we do.
4) Whats your favorite season and why?My favorite season by far is the fall. The weather is comfortable. Its neither too hot or too cold. The leaves are changing, were all enjoying watching football, and my favorite item of clothing is a comfortable sweater.
5) Whats your one must-have piece for this fall?I think the must have this fall are a pair of tall boots.

FROM THE CLASSROOM
Joi Pratt: Students in my Marketing Accessories, Home and Cosmetics course visited Bloomingdales flagship store this summer, where they learned Bloomingdales history, marketing and merchandising techniques.
Students toured floors 1-3, and met with the Bobbi Brown Cosmetics team inside the Bobbi Brown Studio. The Bobbi Brown Cosmetics team led the students through the 10 Step Pretty Powerful Makeup Lesson using Thu Dao, a Berkeley student, as the model, and discussed product categories, the importance of sunscreen, and current trends.
Alyssa Adomaitis: This summer, my Retail Management course was given the opportunity to work with the Swarovski Company under the direction of Richard Collins, Swarovski Manager on Madison Avenue. Two class sections were broken into teams of four to compete in The Apprentice-like setting to come up with a market-ing plan that focuses on two marketing strategies: (1) brand penetration and (2) brand awareness in the NYC area. The students were guided to create a step-by-step marketing plan and PowerPoint presentation which were extremely impressive. As a result of their hard work, the students were invited to a Bollywood-themed event at the Swarovski store on Madison Avenue.

As a graduating senior of Berkeley College, I am anxious to continue to reach and set new goals. Within the last few weeks of my 11th quarter at Berkeley College I landed my first job. I am now a freelancer at Harpers Bazaar magazine for the Accessories Department during New York Fashion Week. I manage the Fashion closet with a team of Accessories Interns. I am contributing to the Fashion Department of the Hearst Publication work-ing directly under Executive Accessories Editor Sam Broekema and Accessories Editor Amanda Weiner.
I enrolled into Berkeley College three years ago to study Fashion Marketing and Management. My studies included Fashion in the Media, Retail Management, and Visual Merchandising. While these courses where challenging and required dedication, Ive learned not only the course materials, but valuable lessons that apply in a professional setting. I am now so much more optimistic than ever about the future!
