Helped Hoover Schools Start Chinese Classes

ver school system this coming school year is adding
Mandarin Chinese classes, making Hoover and Spain
Park high schools the first public schools in the Birming-
ham area to offer the language. Dodson, Hoover’s assis-
tant superintendent, pointed out that China has been
making substantial investments in English language
learning. Dr. Iris Xu, the director of CIT, pointed that
the odds of landing the Chinese interpretation job are
much greater. And China's global business expansion
Hefei Normal University Visited the Confucius Institute at Troy University
On May 21st, the delegation from Hefei Normal University, China visited the Confucius Institute at Troy
University. Chinese teachers and staff of CIT introduced the basic situation about promoting Chinese
language and Chinese culture in Alabama. CIT booklet were given to them in order to strengthen mutual
communication between the two parties.

create even more demand in the marketplace for people who can speak Chinese. The Golden Dragon
Precise Copper Tube Group's decision to open a $100 million plant in Wilcox County last year is a
prime example, Xu said. Alabama is recruiting Chinese companies to bring operations here. Steven
Frost, the former Chinese teacher at the LAMP High school will be the instructor in Hoover. Xu said
Frost will be an excellent addition to Hoover schools because he had done a wonderful job at the LAMP
High School in Montgomery, which CIT supported it to a great extent.

Soldiers From Ft. Rucker paid a visit to
the CIT
On May 15, CIT received soldiers from Air
Base Fort Rucker, and gave them a tour
around CIT. Dr. Ingram, Vice Chancellor of
Troy University who is in charge of CIT de-
livered a speech. Soldiers also tried tradition-
al Chinese food, and they loved it!
The Confucius Institute at Troy University Participated in Focus East Montgomery
On May 14th, the Confucius Institute at Troy University (CIT) were invited to participate in Focus East
Montgomery. CIT set booth to introduce Chinese traditional culture and Chinese language courses of
Confucius Institute. The event was jointly presented by the City of Montgomery & Montgomery County,
with the purpose of sharing up-to-date information about upcoming city and county projects in East
Montgomery, meeting and learning about organizations providing services in the area and gathering to
share ideas to enhance East Montgomery communities.
CIT Was invited to Attend Asian-Pacific Islanders Heritage Month in Ft. Rucker
On May 21st, 2015, members of the Confucius Institute at Troy University (CIT) were invited by SFC
Hegdepeth to Fort Rucker Army base to attend the Asian-pacific Islanders Heritage Month. For this
event, CIT demonstrated Taichi and ethnic dance to audience and introduced Chinese cultural knowledge.
During the lunch, the Chinese dumplings, spring roll and Chinese dishes were well-received and praised.
This event is a good platform for local citizens and soldiers to learn about Chinese Culture.

The 3rd Chinese Culture and Language Workshop at Dothan Campus
Concluded Successfully
On May 21st, the 3rd Chinese culture and language workshop at Dothan Campus came to an end success-
fully. This four-week event was carried out by the Confucius Institute at Troy University (CIT). This
workshop features four lectures about basic Chinese language and the other four about Chinese culture,
such as Chinese business dinner etiquette, Chinese Face and Chinese Guanxi,etc. It was well-praised by
the attendees. CIT director Dr. Iris Xu attended the closing ceremony and made a speech. Dothan is a good
place to promote Chinese program, she said, and China’s global business expansion will bring more de-
mand in the marketplace for people who can speak Chinese. Think global, just think China, she added.
STARTALK Orientation 2015 was held by the CIT at Montgomery
On May 16, STARTALK Orientation 2015 was held by the Confucius
Institute at Troy University at Montgomery Campus. The Director, Dr.
Iris Xu and Dr. Feng, professor of College of Education of Troy Uni-
versity made an introduction about the students program and teachers
program, which covers two weeks residential camp at Troy Campus
starting on June 28.

Chinese Culture is Burgeoning in Montgomery Community
On June 1, teachers from the Confucius Institute at Troy University Montgomery Campus organized pa-
per-cutting-themed culture event, one of the serial events, at E.L.Lowders Library in Montgomery. After a
brief presentation of the origin, development and feature of Chinese paper-cutting, the participants started
learning to cut DIY paper-cutting works. They were so passionately engrossed in their jobs that pieces of
colourful paper turned into vivid paper-cutting images. Form March 2015, CIT Montgomery Campus
started monthly culture events at Lowders Library, the topics covers costumes, cuisines and festivals.
Many people were attracted by the events.
