Dear Parents and Friends,
Travelling Book Fair
Throughout this week the Travelling Book Fair has been with us, causing
excitement and the sharing of our passion for books and reading. The
children have loved seeing the brightly coloured, enticing front covers,
seeing „old favourites‟ and passionately expressing their views on
particular authors. Thank you for buying the books as with the
commission we will buy nonfiction books for our libraries.
Visits out of school
This week Years 4 and 5 visited St Albans Abbey and Reveley Lodge
respectively to consolidate and develop their learning of their History
topics. As usual, and as expected, the girls‟ behaviour was exemplary.
Next week all of the Lower Prep are going on an adventure in Aldenham
Country Park to take part in workshops based on a Bear Hunt or life
cycles.

Class Assemblies
Yesterday Year 3 led an excellent assembly about rubbish and recycling.
They were all amazing, spoke clearly and
confidently to give us information, figures
and advice. A delightful assembly with
every pupil being a true credit to Mrs
Franklin. Please read their full report and
see the photos on the Year 3 page.
Next Tuesday it is the turn of Year 5 and
then on Friday, Year 4.

Reception
This week all the
animals escaped
from the zoo! We
enjoyed making
special masks and
“wanted” posters.
Year 1 have been
fascinated by the growth of
the cress during the past 2
weeks. Some of the girls
clearly have very green
fingers and their cress is
now ready to harvest.
Although all the cress was
sown under the same
conditions and placed in a
sunny position some seeds
have grown much better
than others. We have been
hypothesizing about the
possible reasons for this.
The girls drew some
fabulous pictures of their
cress and looked really
carefully to notice the
shapes of the leaves.
On Tuesday the girls chose
the best cress growers and
after totalling the votes Sia,
Tara, Saanya, Meghana and
Ariana were all voted
winners.
This week we planted grass
seeds and will report on its
progress in due course.
Year 1
Year 2 Year 2 were very excited this morning when we
received an e-mail all the way from Australia! In our
ICT lesson on Monday we sent an e-mail to Ariana,
who returned to Australia at the end of last term, and
eagerly awaited her reply.
Ariana says she is happy to be
back at her school but misses us
lots. She and Kiara have got 2 ten
week old kittens whose names are
Jammie and Dodger; named after
the Jammie Dodger biscuits they
enjoyed while over here but can't
get in Australia.
On Thursday Year 3 presented their assembly to the school and their parents. It was all about rubbish and litter. In our Geography lessons we have learnt about the impact that litter can have on wildlife. It can cause injuries, cuts, suffocation and some small things can be swallowed. If we take more care with our rubbish we can prevent these sad things from happening. It is also important to re-cycle and re-use rubbish and things that we no longer want. Glass, plastic, cans, paper and card are just some of the things that can be re-cycled.
The girls showed everyone the posters that they have made in ICT, some of them acted out a little scene about bargains at the charity shop and everyone sang a beautiful song called Wonderful World. We do live in a wonderful, beautiful world and we should all try to appreciate it and take care of it.
Year 4
On Tuesday Year 4 went to St Albans. During the day we
learnt about the Dissolution of the
Monasteries, Tudor Dance and Music,
and some facts about Saint Alban
and the Abbey. Overall it was a
great day with lots of interesting
information.
To follow
When we arrived at the lodge there were audible gasps from the girls as they admired the beautiful gardens and conservatory, where goldfish swam in the fountain. We were greeted by a group of museum volunteers who gave up their morning to engage the girls in a complete Victorian experience - examining beautiful art-work; working as a laundry maid to do the washing; examining the furniture from that period; learning some of the houses secrets; and learning about Eila Chewett and her life.
Year 5 An ex-St Margaret‟s girl, Mrs Eila Chewett lived in Reveley Lodge until her passing. At this time it was bequeathed to Bushey museum so we were delighted to be able to take advantage of this little historical gem
right on our doorstep.
On our walk, Mrs Thomson pointed out a number of Victorian places of interest dotted around Bushey, including a water trough previously used for Metropolitan Police horses and another water pump on Elstree Road.
This was followed by an informative tour of the garden
which has been lovingly restored to reflect its heritage. It even includes a
„human‟ sundial so we were lucky the sun was shining
down on us!
Our day was rounded off with
a delightful afternoon tea
where the girls were introduced
to the correct etiquette from
the period.
History
Year 6 have been given the task of writing a presentation, to give to the whole
class, about The Role of Women in World War ll. They will present them next
week.
Did you know?
Women did not earn the same wage as men at the start of the war.
Queen Elizabeth actually worked during World War ll. After months of begging
her father to let his heir pitch in, Elizabeth—then an 18-year-old princess—
joined the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service.
This week we visited the book fair and most of the girls found some exciting new books to read. Year 6 have really enjoyed reading this year and I am amazed at how keen they are to discover new authors and explore new titles. Some of them have read up to 30 books this year which is a huge achievement. When we finish a book we write a short review. Others can read the reviews and try a book that they may not have previously considered. Our Year 6 book worms use the new vocabulary in their work and some of their creative writing is imaginative, well-structured and mature.
Year 6
Women who
worked in the land
army earned
only £1.60 per week!
