FROM C.E.O. CARTER’S ENCYCLOPAEDIA

BILIOUSNESS. This condition, whether chronic or acute, may be relatedchiefly to the planet Jupiter and also, Ishould say, in no small measure to Nep-tune, which appears to be closely con-nected to the liver. Both Sagittarius andPisces are often prone to liver com-plaints, but the former, being more ac-tive (though often quite as self-indulgenton occasion), is probably the less proneof the two. Venus and the signs of Ve-nus, particularly Taurus, often occurprominently in the horoscopes of thosewho are bilious subjects, but on thewhole the worst aspects in this regardare probably afflictions between one orboth the Lights and Jupiter, which is apt,at least during the progress of the attack,to appear singularly unlike the “greaterbenefic.” See also under Liver.BLADDER. This organ is traditionallyplaced under Scorpio and probably quitecorrectly, though I have not enoughcases wherein it is affected to enable meto write with assurance. — An Ency-clopaedia of Psychological Astrology

Coming late Spring!

VETTIUS VALENS was born in120 AD. As a young man hestumbled about trying to find him-

self until one fine day he landed in Egypt, which was the India of his day. Whereuponhe began a quest for enlightenment & in theprocess was swindled by virtually everyonehe met. Finally he chanced upon astrologyand, like so many of us, his years of desper-ate frustration had so sharpened his mindthat, once he started in astrology, he couldnot be stopped. He was a man possessed.

He left behind some 400 pages of themost brilliant astrological writing. His An-thologies were prized through the centuries,up until astrology itself fell out of favor.

This is yet another case where academ-ics beat us by a mile. Specifically, Wilhelm

Kroll, in 1908, and David Pingree, in 1986,who together painstakingly restored the an-cient Greek text, and most especially MarkRiley, who translated it a dozen years agofor a magazine that went bust just as he wasfinishing years of work. Whereupon Prof.Riley put his work on the shelf, never ex-pecting it would see the light of day.

Over the past 20 years there have beenat least two previous attempts, known to me,to bring this work before the astrologicalcommunity. The first failed, the secondlooks to me as if it will be stillborn.

Prof. Riley’s translation is brilliant, evenif he wants me to call it “preliminary”. It isliterate, it is fluent, as a classicist he of coursehas a firm grasp of the Greek, and a surpris-ingly good grasp of the astrology. To hisbasic text he has written an extensive Sur-vey. To them I will add tables, charts, glos-sary and an index. The result will be around500 pages, it will sell for something like$60.00, as the professor, who feigns indif-ference, will get his cut. In the coming weeksI will post peeks here in the newsletter, andwill take advance orders as soon as I havean idea of the overall scope of the project. This is a major event, and I am honored to

be part of it. — Dave

Astro-Med:

The Decumbiture Chart

THE decumbiture chart is as old as thenatal chart. Before the advent ofmodern natal astrology, it was often

the only chart the medical astrologer had.And while the natal chart itself is essential, medieval medical astrologers were unanimousthat the decumbiture chart, by itself, was a com-prehensive guide to diagnosis and treatment.

As the name implies, Decumbiture is castfor the moment when you’re so sick you taketo your bed, but unlike modern usage, you’renot just a bit under the weather and having asick day. A decumbiture is a form of horary, and the question it seeks to answer is if youwill ever rise from it. In other words, De-cumbiture is a matter of life and death. Inmodern speech, Decumbiture is when the am-bulance comes. If this time was lost, thenthe astrologer would cast a chart for the mo-ment the patient’s urine was presented to him.Blagrave termed the urine the “excrementof the blood” and said he could often foretellthe state of the urine (in a sealed container)merely by glancing at the decumbiture.

Blagrave says the rising sign of the decum-biture must describe the patient himself. Byimplication this means Blagrave would changethe sign on the ascendant until it did. He pre-sumably based this on the patient’s physicalappearance and perhaps on their station in life.

The ascendant and the Moon were the keyfactors. If they were both in cardinal signs, the ailment would soon be over. If they werein fixed, the ailment would be long in dura-tion, if in mutables, it would come and go.

The nature of the ailment was shown byhard aspects (conjunction, square, opposi-tion) to the Moon from Saturn/Mercury, orMars/Sun, where Mercury & the Sun are sec-ondary. Explicit delineations were custom-arily given for Moon to Mars, and Moon toSaturn aspects, through each of the twelvesigns, but the exact nature of the delineationsvaried from astrologer to astrologer.

Thus, writing in 1647, Lilly’s 24 delin-eations included five in which he thought thepatient would die. By contrast, Blagrave’sdelineation of these same 24 aspects (Moonto Mars, Moon to Saturn, through the twelvesigns), forecasts death not once. I deducefrom this that Blagrave was the better healer, though one should remember that Lilly tookup medicine later in life and might have im-proved his skills thereby.

Here is an example. Moon in Aries, con-

junct, square or opposed to Mars:LILLY: If the Moon next after her separa-tion from the Malevolent beams or aspect ofMars do also apply to the conjunction or op-position of Saturn, and she decreasing in light& slow in motion, there’s small hopes of life;let the sick prepare for God.BLAGRAVE: . . . then the sick shall be tor-mented with continual Fevers, with little orno rest or quietness, a continued extremethirst, and dryness of the tongue & breast,an inflammation of the Liver, tending to aPhrensie, high & inordinate Pulses. . . . IfVenus be stronger than Mars, then coolingremedies will be suitable; however ‘twil benecessary to let blood.

Times of crisis occur when the transitingMoon squares, opposes and then squares itsposition in the decumbiture. If at any of thosetimes she makes hard aspects to malefics, thepatient’s condition worsens, or he dies. Onthe other hand, if at the time of the decumbi-ture there is a helpful aspect from a benefic(Venus or Jupiter), the sick, though he maysuffer, will recover. He also recovers if, atthe critical times of the squares & opposi-tion, the benefics cast favorable rays to theMoon. (This applies as well to the Moon’ssemi-squares to itself.) A waxing Moon (newto full) conveys strength and hope. A wan-ing Moon is a sign of weakness. Know thesesimple rules about decumbiture and the tran-siting Moon, and you will know, in advance, when your loved one will recover, or relapse.

If the malady lasts for a full lunar month,it is said to be chronic, whereupon the Sunreplaces the Moon as an indicator.

It was not my conscious intention to pub-lish medieval medical texts, but it seems Ihave. All of these are excellent and worthyof your attention:Christian Astrology books 1 & 2 – WilliamLilly, 1647.The Astrological Practice of Physick, byJoseph Blagrave, 1671.The Astrological Judgment & Practice ofPhysick, by Richard Saunders, 1677. Thisis a most excellent book. Ben Franklinthought highly of it.Astrological Judgment of Diseases fromthe Decumbiture of the Sick, by NicholasCulpeper, 1655.Encyclopaedia of Medical Astrology, by Cor-nell. Study this one last. When you understandBlagrave, you will understand Cornell.

The Moon’sGeneral Indications

The Moon’sGeneral Indications

THE first aspect the Moon applies toreveals what to expect first: if good,a good start—and if her last aspect

is also good, then a good ending to the mat-ter. If the first aspect is bad and the lastgood, matters get off to a bad start but endwell. When her final aspect is bad it signi-fies an unsatisfactory end of the matter.

If all her aspects are good, little troubleif any will be experienced; but if they areall bad there is great difficulty in the attempt& no final success.

If the Moon’s final aspect is to a retro-grade planet there will be frustration & thecase will not turn out as planned: the per-son is at fault if it is his ruler.

If her final aspect is parallel but to a ret-rograde planet, the answer to the questionis “Yes; but not as expected; it is as good asdone but will come too late to do any realgood” as far as this case is concerned.

If the Moon’s final aspect is a square, the querent will regret the course he took, and any request is sure to give offense, which will endure if that planet is a maleficin a Fixed Sign, particularly Scorpio. If theMoon’s final aspect is an opposition, mat-ters end with some separation or lack ofcooperation; there is greed or jealously inevidence, and especially if it is Saturn.

If the Moon cannot complete her finalaspect because the planet leaves the Sign itis in before she reaches the necessary de-gree, the person will abandon the matterbefore it can be finished (or because hethinks it cannot be accomplished). — Sim-plified Horary Astrology, 1960. Much ofthis relates directly to the decumbitureMoon. – Dave

Character & Mind

MUTABLE signs denote intel-lect, vacillation, indecision, nervousness, worry, duality,

adaptability, cunning. Fiery signs giveenergy, activity, intellect, ardour, inspi-ration; earthy signs are practical, con-crete, suspicious, plodding, worldly; airysigns are mental, idealistic, nervous, in-tellectual; and watery signs emotional, imaginative, changeable, and psychic;there is sometimes a tendency to drinkor debauchery, especially if Venus orMercury be afflicted here.

The general type so indicated will bemodified by the sign positions and as-pects of the significators, good aspectsgiving the more favourable characteris-tics of the aspecting planets, and bad as-pects the more unfavourable.

Mind. The chief significators ofmind are the Moon, Mercury and planetsin, or the ruler of, the 3rd house. In addi-tion planets in the mutable signs & ca-dent houses also influence the mind.Mercury rules the pure intellect; the Moon, the brain & concrete mind; the 3rd house, the lower mind; the 9th the higher mind, phi-losophy, and dreams; the 6th the sub-con-scious mind; and the 12th, the hidden, inner, and unconscious mind, and occultism.

The signs & aspects of the significatorsdenote the mental characteristics. If Mercury& the Moon are unconnected, not aspectingthe Asc., and afflicted by the malefics, espe-cially if mutable signs are involved, there isa great danger of mental instability or mad-ness, Saturn indicating melancholia, Jupiterand Mars religious mania, Mars alone mad-ness, and so on. The more aspects there areto Mercury the better, even if many bad ones.. .

MAppearance ofthe Second De-canate:

NOTE thesmall head,

short body andlong legs associatedwith Sagittariusrather than Leo. Yetthis young man pos-sesses the Leo nose, mouth & jaw formation. This decanate is almostinvariably taller than theother two.

The Sagittarius de-canate of Leo is ruled byJupiter. This gives akind and genial nature, with warm sympathiesbut a tendency to go toextremes. It thus weakens the will-power ofthe sign as a whole, especially if Jupiter is af-flicted. In the case of a married man any successattained would depend largely upon the wife.

Anrias Extra:In studying the influence of the mind upon

the nativity, the third & ninth houses are con-sidered. The personal emotional desires andtheir more sublimated form of platonic friend-ship are associated with the fifth and its op-posite the eleventh house.

From:The Key To YourOwn Nativityby Alan Leo

The position of the planet Mercury ineach horoscope denotes the mind, andhence the mental qualifications. Thisposition is modified by aspects, moreespecially any aspect to the Moon, whichaffects the lucidity & clearness of thecapacity for mental expression. Further, since Mercury is also related to the ner-vous system, and the Moon to the brainin a general sense, good or bad aspectsbetween these two planets will have abearing upon the general nervous condi-tion, whether serene and well regulated,or hypersensitive, fidgitty, irritable, etc.MERCURY IN ARIES: Your mentalfaculties will be quickened. You will bequick to perceive and observe, possess-ing a fertile and inventive brain, good atoriginating designs & quick in all men-tal work. . .MERCURY IN TAURUS indicates thatyou are slow to make up your mind butthat it is immovable when once it is madeup. You can, however, exercise muchpatience and perseverance in all mental

pursuits, and it makes you disposed to besociable, friendly and affectionate . . .MERCURY IN GEMINI. This will bringto the front all “mercurial” affairs, giving youthe ability to write, and study. You wouldhowever, learn more by travelling, than bystudying or reading, for Mercury in Geminiis rather against concentration . . .MERCURY IN CANCER will cause youto be active & somewhat changeable. Youwill also be very ingenious, and inquisitive, grasping many subjects, and taking a wide, comprehensive view of things. Cultivateyour memory, and make your mind strong, and alert . . . — The Key to Your Own Na-tivity, by Alan Leo.
