Term 4, Week 4 November 1, 2019 War is an ugly thing Principal's Editorial As a young boy growing up I remember vividly the daily details on the war in Vietnam as north fought south. One of the most haunting images from that time is the picture of a young nine-year-old girl running down the road sans clothes. The napalm attack had burnt her outfit and in obvious agony she has been fleeing when the moment was captured by a photographer. Recently the photo, which has been given credit for stopping the war, was voted the most iconic photo of the last 50 years. In achieving this feat it won against Nelson Mandela walking from prison, the unidentified man stopping the tanks in Tiananmen Square, the Man on the moon (Buzz Aldrin) and the Charles and Diana royal wedding kiss. After the young photojournalist had driven her to the hospital, she was treated for her burns, but the medical doctors said there was nothing more that could be done and so she was taken to the hospital morgue. When her parents finally found her she was still breathing and with the help of a friend she was transferred to a burns unit for treatment in Saigon. Little Kim survived, but the scarring was significant and its impact on her life was substantial. She wished she had died with her cousins because she felt she was ugly and unlovable. Kim felt she was unable to wear short sleeves because of her scars and she was jealous of young girls in t-shirts. Depressed and suicidal, her life was made more difficult by the communist government that prevented her from finishing her medical studies. Kim was, however, permitted to go to Cuba and study, and there she met her husband and together they defected to Canada. Today she is good friends with the photojournalist who made her famous, lives in Canada, is a public speaker campaigning for peace, and promotes forgiveness to others no matter how nasty they have been. Kim indicated in a Wall Street Journal article that the physical scars were significant but her psychological scars were even greater. The trauma of her life only began to heal when she started to read a Bible in her local library and in 1982 she became a Christian. No matter what you have been through – there is a God who wants to be a part of your life and if you accept that – your life will change. And that just may be a beautiful thing. It’s worth a thought. War is an ugly thing Principal's EditorialAs a young boy growing up I remember vividly the daily details on the war in Vietnam as north fought south.

Nurturing Young MindsThe Commercialisation of Childhood

Spend, Spend, Spend

Juliet Schor in her book, Born to Buy, found that children recognised logos at eighteen months old, could ask for products by name at two years old and by three and a half, believed certain brands made them cool, strong and smart. By first grade they could name 200 brands. She defined US teens and ‘tweens’ then as the most brand-orientated consumer involved and materialistic generation in history. At the same time the average young person was exposed to 300 ads on TV, the internet, magazines and billboards every day and the desire for ownership remains strong and young children vulnerable to the sales pitch.

In Australia, Sharon Beder from the University of Wollongong blew the whistle with her 2009 book This Little Kiddy Went to Market. She claimed the decline in young people’s wellbeing was aligned with corporate interference in their lives, with marketing designed to foster discontent and turn them into consumers defined by what they had and not who they were. Since then, an exponential growth in the internet, social media, apps, screen time and digital devices has been seen.

Take-Home Messages:• Children clearly prefer being given adults’ quality time and attention instead of goods-

kids really value experiences, such as camping trips with Dad over and above even the latest technology.

• Develop value giving and gratitude – try not to engrain ‘material parenting’ by rewarding good behaviour with gifts, use affirmation.

• Practise what you preach – beware what adult behaviours, such as envy for another’s house or car, they may subconsciously internalise.

• Try to limit screen time and exposure to advertising – do everything you can to reduce the mass of messages.

• Identify well-tailored and targeted interventions at the individual or group level.

Children can be helped, both at home and at school, and may even be able to help themselves and their peers to put consumer culture into perspective.

VCE students sit the 2019 English examOn Wednesday, months of hard work came to a head for our first cohort of Years 12 students.

The 2019 VCE English exam, which marks the beginning of the exam period for the majority of pupils was met with broad smiles, stretched nerves and encouraging words by Mrs Kelso who has worked tirelessly throughout the year preparing the students. A prayer of blessing from Mrs Jakupec proceeded the short walk into the examination room for our inaugural VCE students.

We wish them focussed, determined and productive study outcomes over the VCE exam period.

Year 7 PoetryIn the last newsletter, we featured some Year 7 poetry and here are some more poems produced during the Year 7 Poetry Unit.

Don’t forget to check out all the Gilson College poetry in the Education Shed at the Whittlesea Show this weekend.

‘In The Garden’ In spring,

the garden wakes from its long sleep The flowers bloom and the fruits grow

The strawberries became red like blood, and the apples grow ripe as ever

In the garden, the birds sing loudly,

while the sunflower smiles at the sun All the time time the garden is happy,

until winter comes

‘Choice’ Metaphor Poem

Choice is not a gift But a deadly curse

It is not better But is certainly worse

To have a choice You will certainly lose

There is nothing worse Than the words, “Just choose!”

It is inevitable Your choice won’t matter

Whatever you shall choose You will regret in the latter

It is a game And your paths set out

Your choice won’t affect Whether you rejoice or pout

Choice is a curse It’s a mere illusion

Whether it’s good or bad Is society’s confusion

by Rushil Sookram

‘Skin’

Nobody is black, Nobody is white

These labels are given to people To swallow over night

It’s your body, Not you

But we are force fed these labels, What can we do?

It’s crazy to think Racism is still around

What does it matter if you’re considered Black, white or brown?

You’re not defined by your skin It doesn’t matter your tone People of the same colour

Aren’t just clones

They’re given one label They fall under a category

But they aren’t the same people, They all have different stories

No one has less value Than someone of a different race But sometimes we can’t control The judgment we have to face

Dear Gilson College School Community, We will be holding the School Fun-Run as a major fundraising event this year on 19th December 2019! We’re doing it to raise much needed money for school infrastructure and resources to maintain the school academic excellence. About the Program The School Fun-Run promotes healthy and active lifestyles while helping us raise funds! It’s all about participation, with students treated to a great day as a reward for their fundraising efforts. Family support is key to our fundraising success and we encourage everyone to get involved. How Does My Child Fundraise? Firstly, go to schoolfundraising.com.au and create a student profile page. Everything to do with your fundraising revolves around this page. Once you have completed this, read through your Sponsorship Form, which has instructions on how to raise money and order prizes. Students who raise just $10 will receive a reward for their effort. The more they raise, the better their reward – don’t forget to check these out in the sponsorship form! We have educated students on the dangers of door knocking without adult supervision, and we encourage you to reiterate this at home. The best people to ask for sponsorship are people you know (e.g. friends, family, work colleagues and neighbours). Online Fundraising The easiest way to help your child raise money is through online fundraising, where students raise an average of $120. On top of raising more money, it’s also safer and easier than doorknocking and you don’t have to worry about handling money! To start fundraising online, go to your student profile page at schoolfundraising.com.au and share your online fundraising link. Getting Involved Not only can you support the school and students with your sponsorship – but you can join in on the fun! We would love to welcome parents and family members to attend the School Fun-Run. If you would also like to volunteer to help on the day, please contact me on the details below. I can’t wait to see you at our event! Ordering Prizes – ALL PRIZES MUST BE ORDERED ONLINE Prizes MUST be ordered between the 15th November 2019 and 20th November 2019. Simply visit schoolfundraising.com.au to create / log into your Profile Page between these dates. Then click on the ‘CLAIM YOUR PRIZE’ button and follow the prompts. If you have any questions, please contact the School Fun-Run team on 1800 FUN RUN and they will gladly assist! Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising!
